ast Saturday morning I woke upwondering why my electric bill I paidin June was so high. I think what got

me started down that path of thinking wasthe loud buzzing of the alarm on my electricclock.I switched off the alarm and turned onthe electric lamp on my bedside nightstand.

I needed the light to find my iPhone, whichwas also on my nightstand and plugged intothe wall outlet being charged. I checked a fewapps, including the weather forecast for theweekend, and watched a couple videos onYouTube.

Reluctantly I got out of bed and got readyfor the day. I brushed my teeth with myelectric toothbrush and took a hot shower, thanks to my electric water heater. My wifewas a few steps ahead of me, her hair alreadydry from the electric blow dryer and in theprocess of being straightened with an electrichair straightener.

I went to the kitchen, flipped on the light, and put a couple slices of bread in the electrictoaster. I opened the refrigerator and took outsome eggs and bacon to fry up on the electricstove. After breakfast I helped my wife loadthe dishes into the electric dish washer.

She went into the laundry room to start aload of whites in the electric clothes washerand I checked on the kids. The door on ouroldest daughter’s room was still closed but Icould tell she was awake from the musicblaring. One of our boys was already playingvideo games on the Playstation 3 in the familyroom and another was surfing the Internet onthe computer. I found Sarah, our youngestdaughter, sitting in front of the television inthe living room watching an episode of one ofthose Disney shows she had most likelyalready watched three or four times.

I spent the next few hours in the garage, which also doubles as my woodworking shop.I used an electric tablesaw, electric sander, electric bandsaw, electric router and electriccompound saw while working on my latestproject. I plugged in the electric wet/dry vacto clean up the mess and ran the electric aircompressor to dust myself off before goingback in the house.

My wife was making lunch with the electricoven and stove while I made myself a glass of

ice water using ice from the electric ice maker. As I made a quick walk through the house Ifound that my sons had switched places on thePlaystation 3 and computer and Sarah wasstill watching the Disney channel. I roundedeveryone up, putting the boys to workunloading the dishwasher and the girls to thetask of setting the table for lunch.

After lunch was over and all the dirty disheshad been loaded into the dishwasher, Iclaimed my spot on the couch to watch amovie on blu-ray. Doing so required turningon the electric television, electric blu-rayplayer and electric surround-sound system.

About an hour into the movie and I felt alittle warm so I got up to turn on the electricceiling fan. And while I was up I decided tomake myself a bag of microwave popcorn andgrab a cold soda.

We all went into town later to do a bit ofshopping and came home just as the streetlights were coming on. The house was niceand cool on our return because the electric airconditioner had been running during thewarm afternoon.

After the kids were done with their showersand ready for bed I plugged my iPhone intothe charger and turned on the electrictelevision in the bedroom to watch the localnews. Before falling asleep I remembered myconcern from the morning, my electric bill.Would you believe it cost me around $3.56 forthe entire day’s worth of electricity?

The point of my story is to illustrate thatelectric rates in Nebraska are pretty low.Residential electricity rates in Nebraskaaverage 10.04¢/kWh, which ranks the stateamong the lowest in the nation. One reasonfor Nebraska’s low electrical rates is itsunique status as the nation’s only completelypublic power state.

The state uses an efficient dependable “mix”of generating systems to supply current andprojected needs. This mix includes coal andnuclear-powered generating facilities plusseveral gas, oil, diesel, hydro, and windgeneration facilities.

So remember the next time you hearsomeone saying that the public power modelisn’t working for Nebraska, it is working justfine.

he World War II veteranwalked slowly up to thememorial wall at Norfolk,

Nebraska. He read the name on asmall rectangular plate: John W.Carson.

“I can’t believe it,” Fred Egley said. His 97 years of memories were clear:teaching Johnny Carson as aninstructor at Norfolk High School, enlisting in the military in 1943,around the same time Carson did,and meeting John F. Kennedy on aPT boat during the war.

Throughout the Veterans’ MemoryPlaza, small, white tags bore thenames of many men with whom he’dserved in the military. Among themwas a tag bearing the name of hisformer student, Johnny Carson, whohad enlisted in the U.S. Navy inhopes of becoming a pilot.

alive through the utilization of aSmartphone coupled with a newtechnology known asSmartMemorials.

The brainchild of Earl and MaryBoston of West Point, Nebraska,SmartMemorials is a way to usemodern technology to bringmemories of the deceased to life.Utilizing SmartTags lined up in rowsas orderly as the award ribbons onthe lapel of a veteran, each small, rectangular tile on the memorialincluded a veteran’s name and yearsof service. As each SmartTag isscanned with a Smartphone or tabletsuch as an iPad or Netbook, theviewer is sent to a website withinformation about the veteran.

Individual websites containinformation contributed by theveteran or the family of the veteran, limited only by their imagination.Contributions may includephotographs, videos, music, obituaries, memorial bulletins andfamily geology, for example, as wellas tributes and memories fromothers.

In addition to military and civicmemorials, the Bostons also placeSmartMemorials porcelain chips onindividual cemetery gravestones, apractice which comes as no surpriseas they are owners and managers ofWest Point Monument Company inWest Point, Nebraska. Each chipcontains an inch square design, called a Quick Response or QR code, which is scanned and read by theSmart phone or tablet.

The QR code is a square grid madeup of a series of square dots arrangedon a white background. Firstinvented in 1994 by Denso Wave forthe automotive industry in Japan, the code was used to track vehiclesfollowing their manufacture. Thehigh-speed, scanning barcodes arenow used in a broad number ofapplications, and often in printmedia such as airline tickets, according to Earl Boston. Itspopularity has spread widely due tothe system’s swift readability andimpressive storage capacity.

The Bostons have adapted this QR

code technology to the death careindustry, marketing to affiliates—cemetery associations, funeral homesand memorial companies—throughout the United States andCanada.

SmartTags have the capacity totransform once static memorials intoliving memorials. In the past, gravestones could give only so muchinformation. The family name, plusthe individuals’ name, birth anddeath dates, and possibly names ofparents or children were carved intostone, much as they are today. If aperson were searching for a familymember, and had never met thedeceased person, the stone could onlygive the information carved into thestone.

“In the old days, a grave orveterans site was always basicallythe same,” Boston said. “It didn’t giveenough information for you to knowthat person if you didn’t know thatperson before he passed away.”

Boston likes to compare theconcept of SmartMemorials withprinted obituaries. In the past, anobituary was a historical documentstuck in a drawer somewhere. Assuch, it never changes.

Currently, a funeral director willdisplay these obituaries on thefuneral home website.

But in the future, with theutilization of SmartMemorialstechnology, a SmartTag can turn anobituary into a living obituary,Boston explained. “Obituariesappearing in funeral home websitesare a fairly recent development of the

last few decades. Now they can useSmartMemorials to enhance theseobituaries.”

In addition, Boston has found thatplanning a SmartMemorials websitegives families a way to work throughtheir grief.

With SmartMemorials technology,it’s possible for a viewer to seeimages of the person throughout hisor her life, hear the person speak, and learn about his or heraccomplishments, interests andambitions. SmartTags can alsocontain family genealogyinformation, so that a viewer can findout where ancestors homesteaded orlearn how the family tree branchesout.

“It’s great for friends and familywho are interested later in life infamily genealogy,” Boston said. Todate, SmartMemorials websites havetracked 20 million visitors, with morethan 32,500 memorial websites toview and providing a wealth ofinformation.

The Boston’s encourage people toplan their own SmartMemorialswebsites while still alive, addinginformation they’d like to haveavailable once the site is activated.People can even plan their ownfuneral through the site, addingsongs they want sung along withother information.

Boston also makes SmartTagsavailable to interested funeraldirectors for funeral bulletins andburial notices in newspapers. Anyone

reading those print materials is ableto connect with the SmartMemorialswebsites by scanning the print codethrough a Smart phone even thoughthousands of miles away.

In large city newspapers, publishing a complete obituary canbe expensive, Boston said. With theaddition of a SmartTag to a shortfuneral notice, readers may be ableto read the obituary through thewebsite.

It’s also possible to see a

photograph of the gravestone if thefamily has included the image on thewebsite, or if the gravestone isrecorded through an Internetprogram such as BillionGraves.com.

“Whether they’re in Texas,California or Timbuktu, they canvisit the website anytime and thegrave too,” Boston said.

The Boston’s see theSmartMemorials technologyexpanding far beyond individualgravestones. SmartTags can beplaced on individual compartmentsof columbariums, designed as publicstorage for the cremated remains ofthe deceased. They also anticipate

SmartTAGS can be placed on amonument or at any appropriatelocation, providing family andfriends easy access to the memorialwebsite by using a smart phone. They are made from kiln-firedItalian ceramic porcelain and havea self-adhesive backing for easymounting. They were originallyconceived as a way to allow people

the ability to physically attachmeaningful memories to agravestone or memorial.

the use of SmartTags at state parks, history museums or other avenues asa way to share historical informationwith visitors.

The Veterans’ Memory Plaza inNorfolk, is a prime example.Dedicated in November of 2013, theeight-acre park is one of the first toincorporate SmartTags into itsdesign. As part of a larger HeroesPark, the Plaza has space for morethan 2,000 memory tiles, making theproject truly unique. For those whodon’t have a Smartphone, websitescan also be accessed through a linkat www.supporttheheroespark.comwebsite.

The Plaza memorial was designedby the Boston’s, and incorporatesfour stations of memory tiles, bordered with brick columns. Eachbrick column features round tabletsof black granite etched with blackand white images of actual veteranphotographs. Etchings also coverbenches placed throughout. Onescene, for example, shows a veteranat Arlington National Cemetery, andanother, two veterans at the wall ofthe Vietnam Veterans NationalMemorial at Washington D.C.

Two life-sized, bronze statues payhomage to the memorial, one of asoldier in combat gear kneeling downto touch the Memorial, and anotherof a kneeling chaplain, holdingseveral dog tags below an eternalflame. Artists James Havens ofWoodville, Ohio, and Sutton Betti ofLoveland, Colorado created thestatues.

Woven throughout are wheelchair-accessible sidewalks, shadowed bythe American flag waving overheadalong with five flags representing thedifferent military branches of theUnited States.

In addition to the Norfolk Veterans’Memory Plaza, West PointMonument has also been involved inother area veteran memorials, including those placed in front ofcourthouses in Cuming and Thurstoncounties. A second veteransmemorial to incorporate SmartTagsand SmartMemorial technology willbe the American Fallen Warriors

Project in Kansas City, a tribute toveterans who have served in morerecent wars.

Earl and Mary Boston opened WestPoint Monument Company in 1983.During that time Earl was employedby the Cuming County PowerDistrict, working first as a linemanand then serving in other variouscapacities. He retired in 2001,

devoting his time to West PointMonument Company and morerecently, the SmartMemorialscompany.

very homeowner owns lawnand garden equipment ofsome type. This equipment is

so common and used so frequentlythat the dangers associated with itsoperation are often ignored. Probablythe most dangerous piece ofequipment used around the house ona regular basis is the lawnmower. Each year approximately 75,000people are injured seriously enoughby lawnmowers to require emergencyroom medical treatment. Injuriesmay range from minor cuts andbruises to amputations and evendeath.

Only a small percentage of theinjuries are caused by mechanicalfailure. Most are the result of humanerror, including lack of familiaritywith the mower, loss of control, operating in poor conditions, operating in the vicinity of otherpeople, improper clothing andallowing children to operate theequipment.

You can become familiar with yourmower by reading the owner’smanual before the first time themower is needed. It contains

information specific to that machinesuch as the location of all controls, starting procedures, maintenanceinstructions and safety rules. Alwaysread the owner’s manual beforeoperating a machine with which youare not totally familiar.

Proper clothing is essential toprotect your body from harm. Always

wear sturdy, non-slip shoes instead oftennis shoes or sandals. Steel-toesafety footwear offers the mostprotection against the blade. Longpants help protect your legs fromobjects which may be thrown fromunder the mower, such as small rocksand sticks. Hearing protection is alsoneeded to prevent hearing losscaused by exposure to the high noiselevels.

Children and power equipment donot mix. They should be keptseparate. Youngsters always want tohelp with jobs around the house, though, and are often allowed to cutthe grass even though they are notreally mature enough to handle thetask safely. They are also very quick, and a mower left running andunattended even for “just a minute”can be fascinating to a child. Neverleave a mower running unattendedfor any length of time. If the mowerhas electric start, the key shouldnever be left in the switch.

The main source of danger is theblade which does the actual work ofcutting. In order to perform its taskefficiently, the blade must be sharp

and travel at a high speed. Thissharp, high-speed blade can causeserious injury if a hand or foot isallowed to get under the mower deckwhile the engine is running. Neverattempt to unclog or work on alawnmower while the engine isrunning. Any time it is necessary toreach under the mower, disconnectthe sparkplug wire to insure that theengine cannot start for any reason. Itdoes take a little extra time to restartthe engine every time, but not as longas it does to recover from a seriousinjury.

The manner in which thelawnmower is operated on slopes isalso important. Push mowers shouldalways be operated across the slopeso your foot will not get under themower if you slip, nor will the mowerroll down the slope and run over you.Pulling a push type mower is alsodangerous, as your foot might slipunder the mower. Riding mowers aregenerally more stable when operatedup and down the slope. Avoidoperating on steep slopes or nearditches to prevent overturning.Never operate a riding mower onsteep slopes by walking alongside themower as you run it across the slope. There is too much risk of losingcontrol and you are setting a badexample for others.

There is also the danger of objectsbeing thrown from under the mowerby the blade, whose tip may bemoving as fast as 200 miles per hour.A person struck by a rock or piece ofwire thrown with such force couldexperience severe injury or evendeath. Always check the lawn forloose objects which could be thrownby the mower and remove thembefore starting to mow. For theirprotection, children, pets or otherpeople should be moved away fromthe area to be mowed. You canincrease your safety by making surethat all the shields are in place onyour mower.

Refueling hot engines and smokingwhile refueling can result in seriousburns, often to large portions of thebody. Always allow the mower to cooldown before refueling, perhaps

taking a rest period at thesame time. Any gasolinewhich is spilled should bewiped up immediately.Always refuel outdoorsand move away fromthe fueling location atleast 25 feet beforestarting the engine toavoid igniting fuelvapors which maylinger for some time.

Another source ofdanger is that of carbon monoxidepoisoning. Carbon monoxide is acolorless, odorless and tasteless gas.It is absorbed into the bloodstreamthrough the lungs approximately 210times easier than oxygen, leavingvery little oxygen available for bodytissues. Whenever an engine isstarted in an enclosed area, such asa garage, the danger of carbonmonoxide poisoning exists.Symptoms include weakness, nausea, headache and visualproblems. Any time you suspect thatyou or someone else is a victim ofcarbon monoxide poisoning, moveimmediately to fresh air and call adoctor or poison control center forfurther advice. Always moveoutdoors before starting the engine

so that the dangerous gases cannotaccumulate.

Keep the blade sharp to reduce thepower required and to providesmoother cutting, and run the engineat the lowest speed that will do thejob. The lower blade speed willreduce the force with which objectsare thrown by the mower while atthe same time reducing engine wear. Source: Timothy G. Prather,

f you’re a fan of music in just

about any style from Americana

and country to gospel and

blues, you need to make plans to visit

the 5th annual Burton's Bend Music

Festival in Holbrook, Neb. The two

day music festival will be August 8 &

9 at the Central Plains Development

Center.

“The Burton’s Bend Music Festival

is a two-day celebration of roots and

roots-inspired music in its various

styles,” says festival producer

Christine Whipple.

Roots music is a broad category of

music including bluegrass, country,

gospel, blues, Native American, folk,

etc. “Roots” music is considered

American traditional music because it

developed there, sometimes out of

foreign origins, and it served as a

basis for music later developed in the

United States, including rock and roll,

rhythm and blues and jazz.

Whipple said there is nothing else

like it in the area.

“Our mission is to bring

professional touring musicians to the

small rural community of Holbrook

and to provide area performers a

professionally produced event where

they can share their talents,” Whipple

said. “In addition, amateur and young

performers are given special attention

through showcases and learning

sessions offered throughout the

event.”

The vision of Burton’s Bend Music

Festival started eight years ago as

Whipple was being exposed to other

old-time music festivals around the

country while she traveled with her

daughter, Alexa, who was developing

her own musical career. The name of

the festival comes from the town’s

original moniker, which was named

after one of the first settlers to the

area, Issac Burton. Burton was a

saddler for the cavalry at Fort

McPherson and was impressed with

the area where Deer Creek joins a

bend of the Republican River. He

vowed to return one day and settle

there. He returned eight years later in

1870 and the settlement became

known as “Burton's Bend.” A post

office by that name was established

in August 1872.

The railroad came through the area

in the late 1870s causing the town’s

quick growth due to all the traffic of

the westward movement of settlers

and hunting expeditions. The town’s

name was changed to “Holbrook” in

1881 in honor of a Chicago,

hen you’re loungingcomfortably poolside, energy efficiency is likely to

be the least of your worries. But formany homeowners fortunate enoughto have these fun backyard spaces inwhich to swim and splash during theseason, the cost of heating their poolsand concerns about wastingelectricity are summer realities. Theenergy used to heat a pool is quicklysent to the outside environment if thepool is not properly covered when notin use, and harnessing this “freeheat” is important for those earlymorning swimmers.

Pool heaters and energy efficiency To extend their use beyond thesummer season, many people heattheir pools. Heating is a fairly simpleprocess. But so is heat loss.Approximately 70 percent of heat islost when it evaporates. There are

simple steps homeowners can take toprevent heat loss, but the easiest wayis to cover the pool when it is not inuse.

Pool covers filter out finer debris, block heat loss caused by evaporationand provide an insulating effect.Savings will depend on how long thepool is covered, but it can add up toas much as 50 percent in energysavings per pool season. When usinga pool cover, residents will also saveon makeup water since more will beretained. The existing pool water willnot evaporate as quickly.

Calculating the exact savingsassociated with a pool, especiallyoperation and maintenance, can betricky. The size of the pool, as well asyour local climate, plays a major role. The Washington State UniversityExtension Energy Program providesa free Pool Energy Use Calculator onits website that helps pool ownersdetermine how much they will savebased on their specific application.(http://energyexperts.org/CalculatorsTools/PoolEnergyUseCalculator.aspx)

Choosing a pool coverPicking a pool cover will depend onthe size of the pool and how muchspace you have to store the coverwhen not in use. Transparentinsulating solar covers are the mostcommon. They float on top of the pooland resemble bubble wrap. Thesecovers block evaporation and allowthe sun’s rays to heat the pool duringthe day.

An alternative to a conventional poolcover is a chemical cover, whichprovides some evaporation protectionwithout the hassle of moving the coveron and off the pool. Chemical coversoften involve a type of alcohol moleculethat floats to the top of the pool waterwhen the water is calm. Chemicalcovers are designed for use while thepool is occupied, but their effectivenessis diminished when swimmers or winddisturb the pool surface. Savings fromchemical covers are often less thanfrom traditional ones.

Pool covers provide the highestenergy savings when they are usedregularly. Deciding whether to invest

Save energy by limiting swimming pool heat loss

wimming pools and hot tubs are fun toys, butaccompanying high electric bills are not inevitable.A number of relatively simple changes can cut

operating costs by half or more.At about $400 per year, the typical residential in-ground

pool can account for one-quarter of a household’s annualutility bill. Hot tubs cost just a bit less to operate—about$300 per year. Electricity for above-ground pools runsabout $100 per year.

Most pool energy goes to power the circulating pump, with much smaller amounts needed for cleaning andwater treatment. In heated pools (which make up only 10percent to 20 percent of all residential pools), energy usevaries widely depending on climate and use patterns. Themost common heat source is natural gas, followed bypropane and electric resistance systems. Solar heatingand electric heat pumps are gaining ground as high-efficiency options but are still not widely used.

Pumps are the heart and soul of any pool. Most poolsrely on a single-speed, 1.5- to 2-hp pump that runs at fullspeed for eight hours a day or more. More efficient poolpump options include:

• Replace an existing single-speedpump with a high-efficiency single-speed pump. High-efficiency pumpsuse 8 percent to 10 percent lessenergy and are only marginally moreexpensive than standard poolpumps—about $10 to $20 above thenormal pump cost of $350.

• Replace an existing single-speed pump with a two-speed pump. As the name suggests, two-speed pumps canrun at two speeds and are more efficient because they don’tgo “full throttle” all of the time. By running at a lower speedfor 16 hours per day, you can save 60 percent to 70 percenton electric bills. A two-speed pump will cost an extra $100to $150.

• Replace an existing pump with a variable-speed pump. The most efficient pumps can vary speed—and thereforeelectricity consumption—with the required workload.Although a variable speed pump will cost about $650 morethan a basic pump, it saves the most energy by far—nearly90 percent—and offers the greatest operational flexibility.Price and availability should improve over the next fewyears as more pool owners adopt this technology.

In addition to replacing an inefficient circulating pump, other measures to consider are:

• Use a bigger filter. An oversized filter will result in lesspressure loss on the pumping system, enabling greaterwater flow with less energy. The larger filter will also lastlonger between replacements.

• Use bigger pipes (typically, 2 inches in diameter insteadof 1.5 inches) and large-radius elbows. Making the flowpath smoother and wider reduces pressure loss andpumping power.

July 2014 15

in a conventional cover, chemical coveror both depends on the number ofhours you and your family actuallyspend in the water. Other factorsinclude the labor costs to move andstore the cover, as well as activitylevels in the pool and ambientconditions.

So when you and your family arelounging poolside this summer, remember ways to save energy foryour backyard oasis.

SAFETY BRIEFS

ccidents around the home re-sult in millions of injuries tothe most vulnerable mem-

bers of your family — young childrenand pets — each year. For example, approximately 2,400 children receiveemergency room treatment annuallyfor injuries caused by inserting ob-jects into electrical receptacles, ac-cording the U.S. Consumer ProductSafety Commission (CPSC).

With a few precautions, these andother injuries can be avoided:

• Install tamper resistant outlets(TROs) that protect against smallchildren inserting foreign objectsinto them. Simple plastic caps typi-cally used can be easily removed bysome children.

• Keep electrical cords tied up orout of sight.

• Unplug all appliances when theyare not being used, such as hair dry-ers or coffee makers.

• Keep appliances out of children’sbathrooms.

• Teach children not to touch ap-pliances when they have wet handsand to keep appliances away fromwater.

• Teach children other basic safetytips such as staying away from out-

lets and not touching electrical cords. Some of the same tips apply to

pets:• Keep electrical cords away from

cats and puppies who love to chew onthem.

• Make sure nightlights and appli-ances are fully plugged in. Partiallyexposed prongs can be a temptationto curious critters.

• Keep halogen lamps away from

pet play areas. If knocked over, theycould start a fire.

• Keep appliances in bathroomsaway from water. Playful pets canknock radios or curling irons intowater, creating a dangerous situa-tion.

• Discourage cats and dogs fromcurling up for naps behind electricalequipment such as computers.Source: SafeElectricity.org

: When my central airconditioner conks out, it is

always on one of the hottest days. What is the best way to pick a goodrepair contractor? Is there any pre-season maintenance I can do myself?

: An old central air conditioner orheat pump does typically conk

out on the hottest days. This isbecause it is running almost nonstopto keep the house cool. Also, theefficiency and cooling output of theunit drops as it gets hotter outdoors, putting even more strain on the oldcompressor, especially the bearingsand valves.

Finding a good contractor to repairor replace an old air conditioner isimportant because you expect yoursystem to keep running for a longtime after their repairs. Therefrigeration system in an airconditioner is a complicated piece ofequipment. You have no way todetermine if things are set properly,so you have to trust that thecontractor did it correctly.

When selecting a contractor, firstcheck with your relatives and friendsabout who they have used and theirsatisfaction. Also, when a contractorgives you a list of references, youshould call each one. People often areafraid to offend a “nice guy”contractor, so they do not tell them ofproblems. They will, however, shareany negative experiences with you, which will help you make your hiringdecision.

If you do not have a source forcontractor names, check with the Air-Conditioning Contractors of America(ACCA) and the Sheet Metal and Air-Conditioning Contractors’ NationalAssociation (SMACNA). Reputablecontractors will belong to one or both

of these organizations, which can giveyou a list of members in your area.

When installing a new system, thecontractor should do a thoroughanalysis of your house and calculateits cooling needs. This should involvemore than just measuring the outsidedimensions and then recommendingthe same size unit (one ton is 12,000Btu/hour) of cooling as you have now.

Improper sizing will result in higherutility bills and poor comfort level.

A knowledgeable contractor shouldask if you currently have any heatingand cooling problems, particularlywith various rooms. There may haveto be additional return air registersand ducts installed. This can increasethe overall cost significantly, so thelowest estimate is not always the oneyou should select.

If your system has just brokendown and you have at least threecontractors to give you quotes, bewary of ones who immediately wantto replace the system with a new one. They should take the time todetermine the current problem andprovide a quote for repair.

Take your time to evaluate thequotes and recommendations.Although your family might beuncomfortably warm for severaldays, don’t rush your decision. It isnot as dire as having your furnace goout during winter when your waterpipes may freeze if not fixedimmediately.

There are several maintenancetasks you can do each spring to keepyour air conditioner runningefficiently, but don't eliminate regularprofessional service. Heating andcooling systems are no longer simpledevices. They are packed withelectronic circuit boards and controls, meaning you would have no way totest them without specializedreadouts and training.

Having adequate air flow throughthe outdoor condenser coils isimperative for good efficiency and along life. This is where the hotrefrigerant expels its heat to theoutdoor air. If the air flow is impededand reduced so the refrigerant doesnot cool as designed, it can throw offthe entire functioning of the system.

Make sure there is a foot or two ofclearance around the housing wherethe coils are exposed to the outdoorair. This may require trimming backa few shrubs or not stacking thingslike junk and garden tools againstthe outdoor unit.

If you notice some of the heattransfer fins on the coils are bentover and touching so air cannot flowbetween them, separate them withthe tip of a scraper. Don’t flex themtoo much or they may break off. Theydon't have to look uniform to beeffective. Make sure all the screws onthe housing are tight. This insuresthe air is being drawn through thecoils and fins.

oaring temperatures and sultrysummer nights can causeelectric bills to skyrocket. This

summer, take a vacation from highelectric bills by making your home—and your family’s habits—moreenergy efficient.

Beat the HeatAir conditioning helps mostAmericans beat the swelteringsummer heat. According to the U.S.Department of Energy (DOE), airconditioning accounts for as much as50 percent of the average householdelectric bill. Proper maintenance andsmart use of your home’s coolingsystem will help keep your electric billin check.

First, make sure your airconditioner’s external unit is cleanand free of debris. Clear away deadleaves or overgrown plants and weedsto enable the unit to perform as itshould.

Second, change all of the air filtersinside your home quarterly, or moreoften in homes with allergy sufferersor smokers. Fresh filters not onlyreduce the strain on your coolingsystem, but improve the air quality inyour home.

Third, the DOE recommends thatyou set your home’s thermostat ashigh as possible, while stillmaintaining a comfortableenvironment for your family duringthe summer months.

Bumping the thermostat up at leasttwo degrees can make a noticeabledifference on your power bill.Investing in a programmablethermostat can lead to even greatersavings by automatically adjusting itso that the cooling system runs moreoften when you are at home and lessoften when you are away.

Made in the ShadeWindows are not only great sources ofnatural light in your home, but alsogreat sources of heat during thesummer. Curtains, blinds, and shadesare some of the most cost-effective

ways to make your windows and homemore energy efficient. These windowcoverings offer low- cost, stylishsolutions to shield the sun’s rays andkeep the interior of your home cooland comfortable. Proper weatherstripping and caulking aroundwindow panes and casings will alsoimprove the function of your windowsby keeping the cool air in and the hotair out. Solar film applied to yourhome’s existing windows will furtherrepel the summer heat.

Daily GrindToday’s appliances are more energy

efficient than ever, performing betterand using less electricity than they didin the past. But despite theirfunctionality and efficiency, mostmajor household appliances give offheat when in use. During peakdaytime temperatures, the residualheat from appliances can put an

unnecessary strain on your home’scooling system and send your powerbill soaring. Cooler temperatures inthe early morning or late eveningmake these ideal times for runningthe dishwasher or washing and dryingclothes. When possible, turn off yourdishwasher’s dryer cycle. Thisprevents even more residual heatfrom warming your home and saveson your power bill. Washing yourclothes in cold water and hangingthem out to dry are also great stridesin reducing your household energyconsumption.

As your summer heats up, call onyour local rural electric utility formore ways to lower your power bill. You can also visitTogetherWeSave.com to find out howlittle changes around the house canadd up to big energy savings. Sources: DOE, EnergySavers.gov,TogetherWeSave.com
