Winter 2013
Well I hope you are all keeping warm! The cold snap was a rather a sharp reminder that winter is here, our trees dropped bucket loads of leaves in protest and the heat pump started rattling away, no doubt sending electricity bills through the roof. A reminder that our AGM is this month and we are once again holding it in the HDTC ground floor meeting room hoping to have plenty of members in attendance. The meeting will be followed by a light supper with your choice of refreshments: wine, tea, coffee or juice. It is not a late night and usually finishes by 7pm so do join us and if you are interested it is also an opportunity to join the committee. Our meetings are bimonthly and as we are all short of time business is conducted promptly with meetings generally lasting just over an hour. We do conduct decision making by email agreement when necessary so the general committee work is not onerous. Since the last newsletter we have gratefully received a donation of $7,500 from the Canterbury Community Trust and a $500 donation from “The Beat” NZ line dancing magazine. Without such donations and grants we would not be able to function as effectively as we do in support of our members and the local renal community. Lastly I would like to welcome a well known friend to the Society as our new Tuesday KIC volunteer— Adrian Buttimore. HDTC’s loss is clearly our gain!

What has happened with the extra funding to support What has happened with the extra funding to support What has happened with the extra funding to support What has happened with the extra funding to support
kidney transplantation?kidney transplantation?kidney transplantation?kidney transplantation?
In June 2012 the Minister of Health, Tony Ryall, announced that the government would invest an extra $4 million over four years “to encourage
more organ donations”. The money was to be spent as follows:
1. $2 million to increase training and support for intensive care health professionals to identify dying patients who might become donors and
give greater support to their families.
2. $1.75 million to increase live organ donation, by employing dedicated staff who can support and guide family and friends while they make the
decision to become donors.
3. $250,000 to explore the option of establishing a national paired kidney
donor exchange scheme (PKE).
What has happened since then?
1. Organ Donation New Zealand (ODNZ), as the body responsible for the co-ordination of the donation of organs and tissues from deceased donors, has received $2 million. ODNZ has indicated that their share of the extra funding will be used to provide increased support for staff in hospitals throughout New Zealand to ensure opportunities for organ donation are always identified and discussed with the ODNZ transplant co-ordinators. New Zealand has one of the lowest organ donor rates in the developed world. Over the past decade the organ donation rate has remained unchanged. In 2012, there were 38 organ donors and 54 deceased donor kidney transplants. ODNZ report that about 55 per cent of families who were asked to consider donating a relative's organs agreed to do so. ODNZ has an on going audit process with the aim of identifying the true potential for deceased organ donation in New Zealand. In other words, how many potential donors are being missed? The Minister will be expecting to see an increase in the de-
ceased organ donation rate over the next four years.
Page 6 The Renal Messenger Winter 2013
Page 1 The Renal Messenger Winter 2013
2. A number of DHB kidney units, patient support groups and KHNZ put in applications around live kidney donation to the Ministry of Health for a share of the $1.75 million. These applications were reviewed by independent experts. In the end the Ministry opted to fund only one application. Dr Mark Marshall of the Counties Manukau DHB, in partnership with the Kidney Society Auckland (previously the Auckland District Kidney Society), was successful with an application to increase live donor transplantation in the Counties Manukau DHB. CMDHB has a large Pasifika and Māori population, 497 patients on dialysis and a low rate of live kidney donation. The DHB and local patient support group will develop a Home Based Live Kidney Donor Educational Programme using Pasifika and Māori health educators and develop educational material for this population. It is expected that any educational material developed will also be useful for other people with kidney disease. In addition, local “Donor Experts” (live kidney donors or recipients) will be trained to help patients and families learn about kidney donation. Again, the Minister will be looking for evidence of
more Pasifika and Māori living donors over the next four years.
3. The current New Zealand Paired Kidney Exchange Scheme (PKE) is the responsibility of the Auckland Renal Transplant Group (ARTG). PKE is a scheme to help incompatible live kidney donor/recipient pairs find another pair facing the same problem and swap kidneys as shown in the diagram. Dr Ian Dittmer from the ARG and Jo Burton, transplant co-ordinator, are funded for up to two years to review the New Zealand PKE Scheme and look for improvements to the scheme with the aim of increasing the number of donors and recipients who participate in the scheme. As part of this work they will look at the practicality of joining with the Australian PKE scheme to increase the chances of potential donors and recipients finding another pair. A description of how New Zealanders can use our PKE scheme can be found on the KHNZ
website.

World Transplant Games 2013World Transplant Games 2013World Transplant Games 2013World Transplant Games 2013 The World Transplant Games 2013 are being held in Durban South Africa from 28th July to 4th August. A team of 10 competitors, 6 supporters and a team physiotherapist will be flying out of Auckland to represent New Zealand.
The Games are a great chance for transplant competitors to compete against each other and make lifelong friendships and a number of the team are staying on to do an arranged game park tour after the games.
If anyone is interested in finding out more about the games Check out the New Zealand Transplant Games Association website, Contact Sheryl Power, our team manager, [email protected]
You need to have had your transplant for a year before you can compete in the transplant games and pass a medical assessment.
I will let everyone know how we get on at the games when we return,

What is a Medication Management Service?What is a Medication Management Service?What is a Medication Management Service?What is a Medication Management Service? This is a free service that allows you to sit down with a pharmacist (either your local pharmacist or a member of the service’s mobile pharmacy team)
and talk about your medicines.
Together you will have the opportunity to review and discuss:
- The reasons why you are taking them;
- When the best time is to take them;
- Any problems you are having with your medicines;
- Best ways to remember to take medicines;
- Any other concerns or questions you may have.
Your pharmacist will also talk to you
about how to make sure you
continue to take your medicines
correctly. They will then work with
you to find ways to make managing
your medicines easier.
The information you share with your
pharmacist will be confidential. A
report will be sent to your doctor and
can be shared with other health
professionals involved in your care.

Fatigue (one of the most com-mon but often least reported symptoms) is most often caused by anaemia that begins early in kidney disease and tends to worsen as the kidneys lose function and produce less erythropoietin. Anaemia can and should be treat-ed early. Rest is good but keeping active is a key to good health too. You
don’t have to run a marathon; daily walks round the block are great!
Although the talk was on pre-dialysis issues we also had people who are on dialysis or have had a transplant. They shared their experiences with those awaiting dialysis and this was found to be reassuring by the latter. Carmel told the group to report any symptoms and not ignore them, and learn about yourself and your care. We have copies of Carmel’s hand-outs here at CKS and of course there’s a lot of information on www.kidneys.co.nz Thanks to
Carmel for a great session!

Health Minister Tony Ryall announced that the Government will provide $92
million over four years to pay carers who look after their own disabled adult
family members with high or very high needs. This means that disabled
adults (aged 18 years and over) assessed as having high or very high needs
based on a number of criteria will be able to employ their parent or other
family member (except spouse or partner) to provide up to 40 hours of
support per week. You can also find further information about the new policy
at the Ministry of Health's website www.health.govt.nz along with questions
and answers.

Would you prefer to receive your Renal Messenger by email as a PDF file?
Each printed copy costs us around $1.70 to print and post. In view of the
fact that more of our members now have access to email we would be
pleased to email the Messenger to those members who would prefer to
receive it this way.
We would like to thank the 59 members and supporters who have already
chosen delivery by email, it has already resulted in a cut to the print run
with associated savings to the CKS.
We now produce 375 hard copies each issue which are distributed to mem-

course we will continue to do this, but if we could further, reduce hard copy
print numbers our savings would be even more sig-
