The hear t of our Campfire album was to paint an alternative

pic ture of what church can be. We LOVE the church.( I f you don’t

love the church, you have no business leading Her in worship) .

We love the streams of the modern church that pursue excel lence

and bring an offer ing that seeks to ref lec t the grandeur of the

G od we worship. We ser ve of ten in this sett ing, because i t is

a val id and honourable way to approach Jesus.

Page 3: REND COLLECTIVE EXPERIMENT CAMPFIRE - … · REND COLLECTIVE EXPERIMENT CAMPFIRE WORSHIP & COMMUNITY REIMAGINED Campfire Resource Pack ... By contrast, Campfire music is all about

The beauty of church is that it champions unity while adamantly rejecting uniformity. While the “megachurch” models itself on the picture of God in his might, glory and holiness, the campfire model tries to reflect God in his incarnate form: something human, touchable, and humbly beautiful. All this is to say that we don’t seek to re -imagine church community

and worship because others are wrong, but rather because there

is a var iet y of ways to be r ight. There are many angles from which

to view the glor y of our G od.

We are so glad that something about the Campfire approach

to worship and communit y resonates with you. We don’t seek

to prescr ibe a cook ie - cutter, one s ize f i ts a l l , “ how-to” manual

for church gatherings in these pages.

We would prefer i t i f your gathering had more in common with

the local, ar t isan, indie coffee shop than the corporate franchise

equivalent : a bespoke approach creatively tai lored to your

specif ic communit y.

We s imply want to share with you the way we imagine beautiful

worship and communit y, in the hope that i t might spark something

in you.

We imagine church as a sharing of our stories, struggles, hearts and lives - as vulnerable as an open flame...Is there anything quite l ike a campfire? Against a backdrop of

marshmallows being toasted into obl ivion and the elec tr ic hum

of laughter, i t ’s l ike being 10 years of age again and sharing al l

your secrets with your best fr iend. That openness and vulnerabi l i t y

is exac t ly what we should see in the greatest communit y on ear th:

the church.

Campfires take place in the great outdoors, where there are no wal ls

of defence. We need to emulate that by dropping our wal ls of defence

and being courageously vulnerable, even i f we have been hur t by

church in the past. We desperately need to develop our fr iendships

past super ficial small-talk. We need to ask emotionally uncomfor table

quest ions in an environment of safet y and grace.

Struggl ing with G od is a necessar y par t of a l i fe of fa ith. Look up

the meaning of the name Israel- to struggle is par t of the ancient

identit y of the people of G od. But to dwel l in doubt, rather than

to s imply vis it doubt, is to ignore Jesus’ repeated cal l on us in the

gospels to l ive l ives of f ierce, dedicated faith. Yann M ar tel in “ The

Li fe O f Pi ” says i t wel l :

“To choose doubt as a philosophy of life is akin to choosing immobility as a means of transportation.”The K ingdom of G od is made up of par t ic ipants, not spec tators.

We can stand as members of the audience i f we wish, consuming

church l ike a c inema- goer grazing on popcorn, enter tained by

what is happening on stage, in the k nowledge that someone else

is tak ing care of business. We can’t do that in a campfire -st yle

gathering: we are forced to be better than that, to get out of our

comfor t-zones and interac t with others in meaningful fel lowship.

Even others who are dif f icult , too quiet, loud, over-bearing,

boring, draining, average and just plain dif ferent.

We imagine campfire communities as glowing with embers of no-holds

barred friendship, unqualif ied acceptance and over whelming grace.

We imagine worship as intimate as the fireside, as warm as family and honest as a late night heart-to-heart...There is a reason, beyond our I r ish heritage, why we gravitate

towards folk music in our col lec t ive.

The folk movement has always run paral lel to high-brow ar t

(histor ical ly of ten found in the high-brow church!) . I t is music

for the uninit iated - accessible to people from al l walks of l i fe,

regardless of musical- ear. The only qual i f icat ion for par t ic ipation

in this movement is a wi l l ingness to be real ; wi l l ingness to s ing

songs of ever yday tr ia ls and vic tories, in ever yday language, with

ever yone who cares to join in. Is the folk music stor y, in i ts focus

on community, honesty and inclusivity, a better stor y than the one

contemporar y worship sometimes tel ls? Can we change our stor y?

Page 5: REND COLLECTIVE EXPERIMENT CAMPFIRE - … · REND COLLECTIVE EXPERIMENT CAMPFIRE WORSHIP & COMMUNITY REIMAGINED Campfire Resource Pack ... By contrast, Campfire music is all about

Don’t get me wrong, I love giant stacks of speakers as much as the

next hair y folk-rocker, but they do have an unfor tunate side - effec t

(beyond t innitus! ) . They drown out the church - and the church

s inging in unison and unit y is more power ful than any ampli f ier.

This is the sound that sacked Jer icho, ushered the Glor y of G od

into the temple and has been mak ing the dark ness recoi l and

retreat ever s ince! There is power in our songs and proclamations

that cannot be measured in decibels, but that might just shake

Hel l enough to register on the R ichter scale down there! I don’t

want to miss the encouragement of being surrounded by the

hear t-music of the warr iors and priests of the K ingdom!

By contrast, Campfire music is a l l about int imate, s ingalong

vocals.Worship is a communit y projec t where the Br ide of Christ ’s

full, undivided attention is focused on the One True Star. Leadership

is a subtle thing in this contex t- not a blar ing megaphone blast

of commands but a gentle direc t ing of the Heavenward f low of

praise. A worship leader should always hope to become invis ible,

not through mediocrit y, but through a k ind of excel lence that

points to the excel lent Jesus.

Egocentric worship is born of too small a view of Jesus: when we really see Him in His majesty, we come “undone” like the prophet Isaiah.

The ver y heights of human giftedness are wor th exac tly nothing in

His bri l l iant l ight.

“ Worshippers must worship in Spirit and Truth” Jesus teaches in

John 4. This means we must come before Him without any masks

of pretence.

We ought to sing with the k ind of raw honesty with which we speak

to our oldest, closest fr iends in the small hours of the morning.

The psalmists had no problem with this - think of “My God, My God,

Why have you forsaken me?”(Psalm 22). This is the hymn Jesus

quotes on the cross in His cr y of derelic tion. I t is the song of a soul

laid bare and an ac t of deep worship; a reaching for the Father ’s

hand in the face of unimaginable hur t.

I t ’s a dressed- down gathering of peers who pay l i tt le attention to

outward appearance. I t ’s al l about the f ire at the centre.

We imagine mission as the ignition of God’s people as we huddle closely around the Consuming Fire...I f we haven’t mentioned it before, we are proud natives of Ireland.

As such we are almost as passionate about the stories and legends

of St. Patrick as our American friends!

We praise God that the f ire blazes on in Ireland! Isn’t this an

amazing pic ture of how a celebrating, counter- cultural community

can transform nations?

When Jesus speaks of the “city on a hil l” that can’t be hidden in the

Sermon on the Mount, He’s not talk ing about a glaring, neon,

festival of f luorescence l ike Las Vegas. There is no elec tricity in the

New Testament: He’s imagining a skyline i l luminated by hundreds

of simple campfires, each surrounded by their own conversations

and celebrations, hopes, dreams, hur ts and healings.

people are drawn to the l ight, heat and safety of Jesus and His

church. Our best effor ts of evangelism are our best effor ts in the

area of loving one another- see John 13:35. I t is so much more

attrac tive than any sermon ever could be. Our love is luminous

in the darkness of a Dar winian, “sur vival of the f ittest ” world.

But it doesn’t stop with loving our family in Christ: we have to

be reck lessly indiscriminate in spreading that love to the rest of

humanity, after the pattern of our extravagantly gracious Father.

There are no outsiders in the Kingdom of God. All are invited into

this myster y of God’s love. Don’t even waste your t ime sor ting

people into such categories as “in” or “out ”. Rather spend your t ime

learning how to love better! Your f ireside gatherings need to be as

welcoming as the Father of the prodigal son. Surrender your social

l i fe to the ser vice of those with whom others won’t socialise.

Be l ike Jesus and be held in the suspicion of the religious because

you are the “friend[s] of sinners”, al l the while maintaining a purity

of hear t that outshines the most zealous Pharisee.

THERE IS NO POINT DEVELOPING A COZ Y SENSE OF FAMILY AND COMMUNIT Y IN JESUS’ NAME IF WE ARE TO IGNORE HIS GREAT COMMISSION TO INVITE THE LOST INTO THE KINGDOM!

THERE IS NO POINT IN INVITING THE LOST INTO A SO - C ALLED CHRISTIAN COMMUNIT Y OF BACK-BITING, MALICE, EGO AND SELFISH AGENDAS!

LET US LOVE WITH A WHITE-HOT INTENSIT Y, BOTH WITHIN OUR G AT H E R I N G S , A N D W H E N REACHING OUT OF THEM.

It’s time to start your fire!So there you have it- the sketchy, scrawled blueprint of church

community and worship re -imagined.

We pray that God wil l do the equivalent of the multiplying of the

loaves and fish, and multiply the value of these unqualif ied words

of amateur theologians and beginner disciples in your hear ts.
