From the president oF Vanguard uniVersity

Welcome to the 2015 presentation of Vanguard University’s Christmas Fantasia!

Christmas Fantasia is a marvelous way to ring in the season with an array of classical and contemporary Christmas music under the leadership of Dr. James L. Melton, Chair of the Music Department. Vanguard University’s vocal and instrumental ensembles have performed throughout the United States and in venues across Europe, China, South Korea, Japan, Mexico, and Canada. They have been invited to return engagements at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall and have earned a reputation as one of the premiere Christian music programs in the nation.

I want to thank the many who made this evening possible. Dr. Melton and our music faculty, students, and staff: your dedication and commitment to excellence are clearly evident in all you do. To our Fantasia sponsors and friends of the University: your faithful support and generosity has

provided for a wonderful evening of music and is making a life-changing difference in our students and for all whom they will serve, lead and reach. Thank you!

As you listen and sing along this evening, I pray that the joy of the season will be kindled fresh in your heart and that the hope that Christmas truly represents—Emmanuel, God with us—will carry you joyfully into the coming year.

Michael J. Beals, PhD President, Vanguard University

Welcome to the 19th annual celebration of Christmas Fantasia!

Christmas Fantasia was conceived with our extended families and Orange County community in mind—featuring a varied and wonderful blend of Christmas carols, seasonal classics, and songs for the holidays. Tonight’s performance would not be possible without the hard work of our outstanding students, and the passionate leadership of our gifted Vanguard University music faculty.

Through the years, Christmas Fantasia has grown from a dessert function in our campus chapel to a major event shared in various south county churches, to the Cerritos Center for the Arts, and now in our 6th year at Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, one of the newest and most distinguished concert halls in the U.S. as part of the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Next to Carnegie Hall or the Lincoln Center (Avery Fisher Hall) where our ensembles have been privileged to perform in concert 5 times over the past 15 years, this if the most grand of musical experiences for our students! This evening as we are privileged to highlight 9 of our 13 department ensembles, everyone’s favorite holiday song is sure to be presented at some point in our fast-paced program. We truly desire for you to feel “at home” surrounded by our delightful, engaging, and talented students, and for a couple of hours experience some of your favorite Christmas carols with the special Vanguard community “spirit” evident through-out!

Thank you for your support of our students and the vital role of music and art within our curriculum and community outreach. “May God’s love surround you, His peace dwell within you, and His mercy continue throughout this New Year!”

Dr. James L. Melton, Professor of Music Chair, Department of Music & Director of Choral Activities
