K.S. Group of Institutions, (KSGI) has extended its border of research by getting into Research and Consultancy with GOSHAKTHI Renewable Energies, a limited Company, which is grooving into providing a micro hydroelectric power generation solution in the Malnad and other Hilly regions, wherein flowing stream water can be tapped to generate electricity sufficient enough for a couple of houses or a small village.

• Setting up a certification centre at KSGI to certify the equipment fabricated/manufactured by Goshakthi Renewable Energies.

• Setting up research/consultancy centre at KSGI and carry out joint-research to improvise the microhydel equipment.

• The resulting research output shall be owned by KSGI and Goshakthi jointly. The intellectual proprietary of output including publication of research papers resulting out of research carried out will be jointly owned by KSGI and Goshakthi.

Introduction: GRE is involved in providing innovative, affordable solutions catering to Clean-Tech arena. It is engaged in design & manufacturing of renewable energy solutions. Currently the primary focus of the company is to cater to the Pico-Hydro market. It has design & developed Pico-Hydro system.

Market Space: There are 2 lakh villages to be electrified. There are 10,000 potential sites within Karnataka & 50,000 locations in North India. Estimated market potential is Rs. 750 crores.

Current Scenario: Market Players: Current players are using Induction Motor

Technology at a rate of 250 installations per annum. Geography: Current focus is within Western Ghats of

Karnataka.

Page 5: RENEWABLE ENERGY SYSTEM LAB in partnership between KSSEM & GOSHAKTHI RENEWABLE ENERGIES (GRE)

Pain Points: Uses Induction Motor Technology for generator system. It requires lots of water (3 inch pipe & 8 liters per second) & high Revolutions per Minute (1500 RPM). Hence active period of power generation is 6 months in a year (June to December). Controlling output of Induction Motor output is the key challenge. Less reliable since:

Generator: RPM dependant output, High Copper Loss.

Controller: Complex to design. Less reliable since it is load dependant. Every seasonal change it must be replaced.

Power Loss: High since system always works under full load condition.

Proposed Solution: Technology: Generator: Permanent Magnet based (self excited) &

Low RPM. It is highly stable & reliable. Controller: Simple to design. Power Loss: Minimal since system runs always under

minimum load condition. Eco-System: Investor: Innovator: Implementer: Marketing & Sales: After Sales Support:

Exploring Government Subsidy route. 90% or Rs.1,10,000  per system from MNRE through KREDL. It is one of the major thrust areas in India’s 11th 5 year plan.

◦ Customer pays 10% of the project cost.◦ Remaining 90% of the project cost will be raised as loan in the

customer name with the help of a Financial Institution.◦ Once the subsidy is released, the loan will be cleared.

◦ Milestones Achieved:

i.      SIDBI is ready to give Line of Credit. ii.      SKDRDP is ready to give soft loan (Rs.50,000) to their

members to buy the equipment. iii.      Karnataka Bank is exploring to give Working Capital. Renewable Energy System Lab setup in Academics: Potential of

500 colleges in Karnataka. Each installation worth Rs.1,50,000. Student projects will also be executed (worth Rs.30,000).

The proposed system converts energy from moving water into electricity. It is a simple system which is driven by water. The prime mover of the system is interfaced to turbine which is in turn driven by water. The system consists of a permanent magnet based low rpm Alternator, turbine, Charger, Storage unit. The potential energy of the water is converted into mechanical energy by turbine which is in turn converted to electrical energy by alternator.

System Description: Figure 1.0 depicts Pico-Hydro power

generator without storage option. The system consists of:

Turbine: The turbine is used to convert the energy stored in water into mechanical energy which is used to drive the generator. There are different types of turbines. Currently we are using pelton turbine.

Generator: PMG based alternator which is used to generate power. It is low rpm generator which requires small water streams with low head.

Controller: The primary function of this block is to regulate the output of power generator block. It is used to provide a constant voltage & constant frequency output.

regulate the output of power generator block. It is used to provide a constant voltage & constant frequency output. It converts the AC output of generator into DC, which is stored in the battery bank.

Battery Bank: It is used to store the generate power in the DC format.

Inverter: It is used to convert the DC power from the battery into AC power.

Load: It can be any appliance or device which consumes power. Ex: Pump set, Fan, Grinder, Bulb, Fridge, Television etc
