WHAT IS RENEWABLE ENERGY?
Renewable energy is energy which comes from natural resources such as sunlight, wind, tides, biomass
Renewable energy is energy that is generated from natural processes that are continuously replenished. This includes sunlight, geothermal heat, wind, tides, water, and various forms of biomass. This energy cannot be exhausted and is constantly renewed.

Advantages and Disadvantages
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
It is renewable It requires less
maintainance It reduces the cost of
operationRenewable energy
products bring economic benefits to many regional areas
It is difficult to generate the quantities of electricity
Renewable energy often relies on the weather for its source of power

TYPES OF RENEWABLE ENERGY
Renewable energy sources are classified as Solar energy Wind energy Hydro energy Nuclear energy Biomass

SOLAR ENERGYSolar energy radiant light and heat from the sunTwo main types of solar energy systems are in
use today: photo voltaics, and thermal systems.
![Page 6: renewable resources.pptx](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042821/55cf9295550346f57b97b38d/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
SOLAR ENERGYPhotovoltaic systems convert solar radiation to
electricity via a variety of methods. The most common approach is to use silicon panels, which generate an electrical current when light shines upon it.

WIND ENERGY Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into a
useful form of energy, such as using wind turbines to make electrical power, windmills for mechanical power, wind pumps for water pumping or drainage, or sails to propel ships

OFF SHORE WIND TURBINES
![Page 11: renewable resources.pptx](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042821/55cf9295550346f57b97b38d/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
FEATURES OF OFF SHORE WIND TURBINES Larger average wind speed than onshore
Easier planning consent
Technical expertise exists from oil rig experience Suitable location

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF WIND ENERGY
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
Wind energy is friendly to the surrounding environment
Wind turbines take up less space than the average power station.
Newer technologies are making the extraction of wind energy much more efficient.
Wind turbines are a great resource to generate energy in remote locations, such as mountain communities and remote countryside.
Another advantage of wind energy is that when combined with solar electricity, this energy source is great for developed and developing countries to provide a steady, reliable supply of electricity.
The main disadvantage regarding wind power is down to the winds unreliability factor.
Wind turbine construction can be very expensive and costly to surrounding wildlife during the build process.

HYDRO ENERGY Currently largest source of electricity from renewables. Needs guaranteed supply of water. Kinetic energy of water rotates turbines which generate
electricity.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF HYDRO ENERGY
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
Once a dam is constructed, electricity can be produced at a constant rate.
The lake that forms behind the dam can be used for water sports.
The lake's water can be used for irrigation purposes.
When in use, electricity produced by dam systems do not produce green house gases. They do not pollute the atmosphere
Dams are extremely expensive to build and must be built to a very high standard.
The high cost of dam construction means that they must operate for many decades to become profitable

NUCLEAR ENERGY The main use currently given nuclear energy is the
electric power generation. Nuclear power plants are responsible for this process.
Virtually all nuclear power plants in production using nuclear fission and nuclear fusion not currently feasible
despite being under development.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF NUCLEAR ENERGY
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
Waste generated are much less reactive
In the reactor would avoid accidents by chain reactions that occur in fissions
It is dangerousGeneration of nuclear
waste and the difficulty to manage them as they take many years to lose its radio activity
