Fairtrade Town Action Plan

Signed: Name: _ Bruce Crowther Adam Gardner Position: Fairtrade Towns Advisor Campaigns Officer (Fairtrade Towns)

Update on progress since status was first achieved:

Please give a brief update on campaign activities, progress made and any challenges over the past year. You may want to give details about how the Council is meeting the commitments made in the resolution, any increases or decreases in the availability of Fairtrade products and updates on the involvement of workplaces, educational establishments, places of worship and community organisations. Please tell us about events you’ve organised, any media coverage generated and any changes to the steering group. This is your chance to tell us what’s worked, shout about your successes and make sure we’re aware of the challenges you’re seeing on the ground as you campaign to win support for Fairtrade and trade justice.

The Town Centre Management service previously had lead responsibility for Fairtrade in Lewisham. Due to a reduction in council income, Economic Development was re-structured in 2010/2011 resulting in the closure of the Town Centre Management service. This impacted on the resources available to take forward Lewisham’s commitment to Fairtrade as well as impacting on the borough activity for Fairtrade Fortnight 2011 and on the steering group. New resources have now been found and a new committed steering group has been formed to take forward this work and this group has already met twice since September 2011. Despite these changes there has still been a wealth of activity relating to Fairtrade in Lewisham since the last submission. This is outlined below.

Clean and Green

During the past 2 years we have seen some fantastic work from Lewisham's Schools who have participated in the Clean and Green Schools Programmes. During the course of 2009/10 we had 7 schools directly work on Fairtrade as a theme, with Stillness Infants School in Brockley doing some absolutely fantastic work. They took Fairtrade into every classroom by arranging special lessons that incorporated videos and books. They also introduced Fairtrade products to the children and took this a stage further by organising a Fairtrade coffee morning for the parents. The Fairtrade coffee morning was so popular that they now run them at regular intervals. Although, Fairtrade was not one of their main Clean and Green themes in 2010/11, the ethos is still well and truly alive in the school and the Fairtrade spirit is something that the School takes very seriously.

2010/11 saw 8 schools take Fairtrade as one of their Clean and Green themes. Both All Saints School in Blackheath and Fairlawn School in Forest Hill did some absolutely wonderful work. All Saints arranged not only a Fairtrade Coffee Morning but also a Fairtrade Fashion Show. Both activities engaged every student, all of the staff and many parents. Their good work in this area was one of the reasons why they won last years Clean and Green Schools Programme. Fairlawn took the idea of a coffee morning a stage further by holding one in conjunction with a Fairtrade cake sale. They also wrote letters to non-Fairtrade companies urging them to change their ways!

2010 Fairtrade Fortnight

A number of events were planned in Lewisham to help spread awareness and to show residents how they can support Fairtrade in Fairtrade Fortnight.

Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham said: "Fairtrade makes a good deal of sense, both for consumers and sellers. There are some great things going on over the next two weeks and Lewisham residents will be introduced to ways they can support the campaign through them."

In 2010 we launched Fairtrade Fortnight in Lewisham with a special Fairtrade Tea themed event at Catford Broadway, where the Mayor talked about Lewisham as a Fairtrade Borough. The Town Centre Management team worked in partnership with the Borough’s libraries to host a wide range of Fairtrade events including: a school sculpture competition, Fairtrade film screenings, a Fairtrade Tea Dance, a Fairtrade Treasure Hunt and craft workshops. (more details on these events can be found below), We also encouraged businesses to hold their own events by producing an events guide which businesses could use to plan events.

School sculpture competition

Primary schools in Forest Hill were invited to enter a Fairtrade ‘sculpture’ competition to highlight the Fairtrade cause. The pupils responsible for the winning sculpture received a fantastic hamper from the Fairtrade chocolate supplier Divine.

The winning sculpture was displayed in Forest Hill library for the duration of Fairtrade Fortnight.

Library events

Fair Trade Film Screenings Lewisham Council and Tipping Point Film Fund presented a series of film and discussion events in libraries around the borough to raise awareness and explore the issues behind Fairtrade.

Tipping Point Film Fund is a not-for-profit organisation that, through public donations, supports great non-fiction films that can change our world.

The films included the following titles:“Life and Debt” (www.lifeanddebt.org) - Lewisham Library, 5.45pm on Monday 1 March - Forest Hill Library, 5.30pm on Thursday 4 March

“Black Gold” (www.blackgoldmovie.com)- Downham Library, 7.30pm on Monday 1 March- Manor House Library, 2.30pm on Saturday 6 March

“The Luckiest Nut in the World” (for children and families)- Downham Library, 3.30pm on Tuesday 2 March - Forest Hill Library, 12.00 noon on Saturday 6 March - Manor House Library, 1.00pm on Sunday 7 March

Fairtrade Tea Dance Manor House Library hosted a Fairtrade Tea Dance from 2 - 4pm on Monday 1 March.

Fairtrade tea and cakes were provided.

Fairtrade Treasure HuntSydenham Library had a Fairtrade Treasure Hunt at 2.15pm on Saturday 27 February for children and families. Fairtrade Craft workshopCatford Library held a craft workshop for children and families on Saturday 27 February at 2.15pm.

Tea sample giveaways

All libraries in the borough gave away a Fairtrade teabag to anyone borrowing a book, CD or DVD during Fairtrade Fortnight while stocks lasted.

Lewisham Peoples Day

Fairtrade has been promoted at Lewisham People’s Day via a variety of methods, school competitions, and promotional stalls. The Lewisham Fairtrade group provided T shirt sponsorship ensuring all ‘crew’ t-shirts were made from Fairtrade cotton. In 2009 there was a Fairtrade competition with a prize of a Fairtrade hamper. The quiz covered a range of questions on Fairtrade.

London Borough of Lewisham

Lewisham Council provides practical support to the steering group by providing a small budget, the use of rooms, catering and officer time to support the work of Fairtrade and the steering group.

Lewisham Fairtrade businesses

The last audit of Lewisham businesses that stocked and served Fairtrade products was carried out in March 2010. This found the following:Cafes and food outlets = 19Independent shops and charities = 12Suppliers = 3Places of Worship = 28National chain stores = 30 Evidence

Action Plan for the coming two years:

Please note, ongoing activity is required from the Council (developing Goal 1) and there must be a Steering Group that meets regularly to ensure progress and continued commitment to the campaign (Goal 5). We strongly recommend that the Steering Group also sets themselves at least one aim to develop activities around Goal 2 (Retail and catering outlets), Goal 3 (community involvement, including workplaces, places of worship, educational establishments and other community organisations) and Goal 4 (events and media coverage). Your group knows what will have the greatest impact locally and what works in your community. Be brave and we look forward to hearing your plans!

Taking Goal 1 forward: Required

The local council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and agrees to serve Fairtrade products (for example, in meetings and in its offices and canteens)

A few questions to start the group thinking! How will the steering group build on the relationship with the Council, developing action and support on the commitments made in the original resolution? Are there new ways the Council can use it’s buying power to benefit producers and workers in developing countries (for example, school canteens or libraries) or different it can support the work of the steering group and help increase awareness and understanding across the community? Overall aim or aims (what do we want to achieve?):Continue to provide and increase the use of Fairtrade coffee and tea in council offices for meetings.Ensure all the council’s contractors and suppliers use Fairtrade tea, coffee and other Fairtrade products.Steering Group to meet at least quarterly to monitor and review progress

Planned activities (what are we going to do to get there?):Audits of Fairtrade products within the councilBlind Tasting - a range of events to encourage staff to try Fairtrade products to encourage switch over to purchasing tea and coffee etc for individual teams.Check whether schools buy Fairtrade productsEnsure Fairtrade is included in catering contracts. Enlist the Council Environment Champions to promote the use of Fairtrade in their offices. Environment Champions are attached to each service in the council and promote and encourage teams to consider such areas as recycling and energy consumption.A staff member from procurement to be invited to join the Steering Group.Review the content of council vending machines and seek to increase the stock of Fairtrade chocolate etc (such as the new Fairtrade Maltesers)Encourage Local Assemblies (local ward based resident engagement meetings) to use Fairtrade catering where possible.Hold quarterly Steering Group meetings.

Measuring success (how will we measure progress?): Questionnaire of staff after blind tasting Audit to show improvements in stock of Fairtrade products across the borough.Keeping to Lewisham’s code of practice for existing and potential contractors/suppliers and service providers promoting the use of Fairtrade to all companies who want to tender for Council business.Number of Steering Group meetings held.

Fairtrade Town Action Plan

We’re very pleased to see that, despite restructuring, the council remains committed to Fairtrade and maintains an active steering group, which is vital to maintain Fairtrade Borough status. Congratulations for all you’ve achieved over the past few years keeping Fairtrade in the public eye.

This looks like a comprehensive yet focused set of aims that will clearly build on the commitment to Fairtrade made by Lewisham to date – and importantly increase the amount of Fairtrade products used. We’d be really interested to see results of the audit, and also to hear how the code of practice works to increase Fairtrade procurement, and look forward to hearing how work on these aims has progressed in your next renewal.

Taking Goal 2 forward:

A range of Fairtrade products are readily available in the area’s shops and served in local cafés/catering establishments.

A few questions to start the group thinking: How does the campaign aim to increase the range and availability of Fairtrade locally and encourage businesses to make more of a commitment? Are there specific companies we want to influence and how will we make it easy for anyone to choose Fairtrade every time they shop or enjoy a coffee in town? Overall aim or aims (what do we want to achieve?):Promote Fairtrade to businesses Continued growth of businesses that stock and sell Fairtrade products.Steering Group to target and invite business representatives on the Steering Group.

Planned activities (what are we going to do to get there?):Update directory on website of Fairtrade businessesProduce an online resource to promote to businesses containing lists of Fairtrade products that they could sell.Audit of businesses in town centres to ascertain which businesses stock Fairtrade products and encourage businesses to increase their range of Fairtrade products.Taste sessions in local park café’s.Target local businesses to sit on Steering Group e.g. Co-operative Group.Map Fairtrade businesses within the first 6 months and then review this 18 months later to track any increase in Fairtrade businessesMeasuring success (how will we measure progress?): Audit completed of how many new businesses have signed up to Fairtrade and how many have continuedRange of Fairtrade products in LewishamOnline resource produced for local businesses and community organisationsBusiness representative on the Steering GroupInteractive map produced

Comments from Fairtrade Foundation:

Again, these aims and activities look ideally suited to develop the availability of Fairtrade products throughout the borough and enable you to communicate to residents where they can get hold of Fairtrade products.

Supporting and informing businesses with ideas of products and practical contacts is a great idea – campaigners in the South West put this supplier directory together to do just that. The latest list of products is available at www.fairtrade.org.uk/products, and perhaps

Page 7: Renewal Form - Fairtrade Londonfairtradelondon.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/... · Web viewRumana Ahmed – Volunteer, Lewisham Resident - rustarry2003@yahoo.co.uk Stephen Nelson

you could source ideas for successful procurement and tips from other local businesses already selling Fairtrade?

Another idea could be to focus on getting products from the ‘Fairtrade Pioneers’ on shelves – a guide to the Fairtrade Organisations going the extra mile is available here.

Taking Goal 3 forward:

Local work places and community organisations (places of worship, schools, universities, colleges and other community organisations) support Fairtrade and use Fairtrade products whenever possible. Populations over 100,000 will also need a flagship employer

A few questions to get the group thinking! How will the campaign reach new work places and community organisations, encouraging them to make their own commitment to Fairtrade and get involved with the local campaign? Are there partners that could help the steering group reach and inspire new audiences or events and activities that could encourage more organisations to get involved, or take their involvement to the next level?Overall aim or aims (what do we want to achieve?):Use the Lewisham Business Awards to award a business that supports and sells Fairtrade products.Targeting different areas with information about Fairtrade.Steering Group to target organisations that would promote Fairtrade across the borough.

Planned activities (what are we going to do to get there?):Fairtrade Category to be launched as part of the rolling programme of Lewisham Business AwardsPresenting Fairtrade to local areas through the Local Assemblies / Faith Groups / Schools and other community organisationsIncrease membership of the Steering Group to include a faith and community representative Continue with a Fairtrade theme in the Clean & Green Schools Programme.Run a Fairtrade poster competition with schools (this worked really well back in 2005) with the winning poster displayed on the side of a recycling / refuse vehicle.Develop a shared programme of Fairtrade activity with the borough flagship employer, Goldsmiths University London to maximise the impact in the Borough.

Measuring success (how will we measure progress?): Number of entrants and a winner for the Fairtrade category of the Lewisham Business Awards.Number of events / activities / meetings where Fairtrade was promoted.Number of schools signed up to the Fairtrade theme of the Clean and Green Schools programme.Poster competition run and winning poster displayed on vehicle.Survey at Local Assemblies – Measure again in second year to track if residents awareness and purchasing of Fairtrade products has increased.

Comments from Fairtrade Foundation:

Using the Lewisham Business Awards to recognise commitment to Fairtrade is a great idea, and you could also present pledge forms or window stickers to all supportive organisations. Some templates you might like to personalise and use yourself are available at: www.fairtrade.org.uk/campaignertemplates. It is also encouraged to have more than one flagship employer, as a next step to this goal so it could be worth considering another workplace from a different sector (perhaps the award winner?) to be another flagship employer for the campaign.

Fairtrade Town Action Plan

As you identify, having representatives from faith, and community organisations (including schools) would help to engage those areas of the community, so it’s good to see that as an aim. Multiplier organisations and individuals (such as churches together, interfaith forums and learning trusts) can be very effective, as well as working through existing community organisations and set ups.

It’s really encouraging to see how many schools have incorporated Fairtrade in to their activities through the competitions, events and letter-writing which are great ways to engage with the subject. Do you know how many schools are using Fairtrade bananas, chocolate or other products in canteens and staff rooms? There are many more ideas and resources to support teachers and campaigners alike in taking Fairtrade in to schools at www.fairtrade.org.uk/schools. We’re pleased to note that 15 schools are registered to work towards becoming a Fairtrade School with the Fairtrade Foundation, although it seems there are not yet any Fairtrade Schools in Lewisham. Perhaps an aspiration for the next two years could be to support the first school(s) in the Borough to achieve Fairtrade status?

Taking Goal 4 forward:

Media coverage and events raise awareness and understanding of Fairtrade across the community.

A few questions to get the group thinking! What events do you want to organise over the coming two years? Are there any established community that you want to make Fairtrade a part of? How will the campaign ‘make a noise’ through the local press, local newsletters and perhaps social media? How will your campaign spread the word over the coming two years?

Overall aim or aims (what do we want to achieve?):Steering Group to run a successful Fairtrade Fortnight – 2012 and 2013.Ongoing promotion and awareness raising of Lewisham as a Fairtrade borough.

Planned activities (what are we going to do to get there):Lewisham Business Awards – Fairtrade category announced through Fairtrade Fortnight.Local Assemblies promotion at all of Lewisham’s 18 Local Assemblies including pre and post campaign monitoring.Publicity and promotion related to Fairtrade fortnight activities and awareness.Stall at Lewisham Council Olympics events in 2012.Media coverage of the Clean and Green Schools Awards.Blind tasting press coverage, in particular in the local press including South London Press, Mercury and New Shopper.Run a Fairtrade poster competition with schools (this worked really well back in 2005) with the winning poster displayed on the side of a recycling / refuse vehicle.Fairtrade web pages updated including the on-line resource for businesses.Use Social Media, including Yammer, twitter, facebook, community blogs, and e-newsletters to raise awareness of Fairtrade.Measuring success (how will we measure progress): Business that promotes Fairtrade wins Business Award.Pre and post campaign monitoring of Local Assemblies about knowledge of FairtradePoster competition run and winning poster displayed on vehicle.Feature in Lewisham e-newsletters.Number of events / activities / meetings that Fairtrade was promoted.Record of number of times Fairtrade is mentioned in social media applications. Comments from Fairtrade Foundation:

We’re pleased to see you gearing up for Fairtrade Fortnight, and do keep an eye on www.fairtrade.org.uk/step for all the latest resources and ideas. From February you will be able to register ‘steps’ for Fairtrade on our online ‘Stepometer’ – we’re aiming to collect 1.5 million throughout 2012 – to represent one step for each farmer and worker we aim to work with in 2012.

In addition to holding engaging and informative events (and of course, getting a Fairtrade presence in to as many other established events as possible) do keep a record of press coverage you manage to achieve. It helps to build up relationships with supportive local journalists, and perhaps to invite one to a steering group meeting to plan stories that would be well received?

As a Fairtrade University, Goldsmiths would be a good partner to organise events and may also be a good source of voluntary members of the steering group (via Student Union or volunteering service), particularly if you have specific roles for them to develop their skills. Finally, for ideas using social media tools and best practice from other groups, check out this guide to using social media in your campaign.

Fairtrade Town Action Plan

Taking Goal 5 forward: Required

A local Fairtrade steering group representing a range of local organisations and sectors meets regularly to ensure the Fairtrade Town continues to develop and gain support

A few questions to get the group thinking! Does our group represent different sectors across the community? How could we recruit new members? Could we join forces or work with other Fairtrade Town Steering Groups close by? How can we work more closely with active schools, colleges, workplaces or businesses? Overall aim or aims (what do we want to achieve?):Continue to review the Steering Group to make sure it has the appropriate people on and where there is a sector gap, fill it.Planned activities (what are we going to do to get us there?):Review the aims of the Action Plan and ensure that members of the Steering Group are able to deliver. Where there are gaps target and invite new members.Promoting opportunities to volunteer and take action on behalf of the Steering Group through Fairtrade events, Local Assemblies/Lewisham Life/Volunteer Centre Lewisham/INVEST- Council staff development group/YAMMER- Council social networking site/Environment Champions.Review terms of reference of the Steering Group by March 2012.Enlist at least 2 further resident volunteers, a faith representative, a further business representative and a rep from procurement by the end of March 2012.Measuring success (how will we measure progress?):Representative members of the community attending the Steering Group enabling the planned activities to be effectively completed. We have the right people on the steering group to help us with the actions we want to carry out.

Comments from Fairtrade Foundation:

A healthy steering group is essential to the success of any Fairtrade campaign so we’re pleased to see so many members taking part. We appreciate the time and energy that it takes to organise a community-wide campaign so would like to pass on our thanks to all involved – Fairtrade simply wouldn’t have achieved such success in the past decade if it weren’t for an active grassroots support across the UK in groups like yours.

As a community campaign with Fairtrade status awarded to the people of Lewisham, it’s important to ensure the steering group is as open, and representative of the community as possible. Therefore we welcome your future plans to keep seek further representation, but are nonetheless impressed with the number of Council representatives from different groups who are involved.
