Celebrating our 39th Anniversary this year, the Renfrew- Collingwood Seniors' Society is a non-profit organization with charitable status. We have a volunteer Board of Directors elected from the membership and they ensure the Society runs efficiently. Our team of dedicated staff, many of whom have been part of the organization for a number of years, are skilled, compassionate and committed to their roles in the organization. Vol-unteers and students play a fundamental role in the care provided to the seniors by assisting us in the delivery of our programs.
Our Centre has a home-like, cozy environment for the seniors in our community to hang out, socialize, share healthy home cooked meals, engage in meaningful activities and of course volunteer their time and skills. One of the goals of the Society is to support seniors so they can stay in their homes as long as possible.
The Society welcomes donations, bequests, and gifts which would enhance our services and allow for expansion. Our official tax receipt number is 11911 5558 RR0001. If inter-ested in making a donation, please send a cheque or money order along with your return address to:

5A WORD FROM DONNA
You often hear the saying, “walk a mile in their shoes.” It brings new meaning to things when you actually do. I recently had an emergency appendectomy and experienced the horrors of severe pain, emergency, surgery, and recovery. It put a whole new outlook on life in general, but more specifically on some of your experiences which I obviously could not relate to until I went through it myself. I often see the toll that hospitalization takes on some of you when you return to the Centre but now I have some insights as to why.
Our health care system is so stressed and it is not going to improve, that is for sure. So I reflect on what we can do to prevent you from emergency visits (wait times), hospital stays and the most horrifying of all, hospital food. It is clear to me that we need to focus a lot more attention on health promotion. There is nothing we can do about emergency appendectomies except surrender and hope for the best, but there are many things we have control over. For example reducing isolation, eating nutritiously, exercis-ing to reduce the risk of falling – taking care of the basic needs and creating balance in our lives. The answer is simple: make sure you attend the programs at RCSS. We need each other. The benefits and rewards from our work and participation are so important to all of us.
Another thing has become clear to me; I (we) do not appreciate how wonderful life is until things get turned upside down. I strongly encourage you to live life to the fullest every minute of the day. Appreci-ate the good times, the people who love and care for you and most of all the little things like the flow-ers in your garden, the birds chirping, and the amazing beauty that surrounds us in Vancouver. A posi-tive outlook on life can make all the difference in the world – surround yourself with pleasant thoughts, love and gratitude. You’ll be amazed how an attitude shift can lift your spirits and change your outlook on life.
I pledge to you that I will do whatever I can to keep you out of hospitals and long term care as long as possible. I truly support the “Home is Best” philosophy.

6A MESSAGE FROM MICHELI
Hello everyone,
I hope you are enjoying our hot and dry summer. As most of you know, I grew up in a country where the summers are long and hot but I have to admit, this year the heat in BC it is exceeding all my expectations. Experts are blaming the “El Nino” phenomenon for our above-average temperatures. This phenome-non involves a reversal of winds and currents that move warm waters across the Pacific, which alters the atmosphere and changes weather patterns. Please
make sure to protect yourselves by drinking plenty of water, wearing appropriate clothes and sunscreen, and avoiding sun overexposure.
This August is Diversity Month, which we will be celebrating on Friday the 21st. We are so blessed to have such a diverse group of individuals from different backgrounds and experiences here at our Centre. This is going to be a good opportunity to share our cultural experiences, embrace tolerance, acceptance, and love. After all, our differences are what make us unique and strong. Enjoy them!

Calcium and Vitamin D
Seniors should consume 1200 mgs of calcium and 600 international units (IU) of vitamin D a day from food sources and/or supplements. Seniors over 70 years of age may require up to 800 IU a day. If you already have osteoporosis, your doctor may recommend even higher amounts of calcium and vitamin D.
Incorpotating milk, yogurt and cheese into your daily diet is the easiest way to make sure that you get the recommended amount of calcium. Other good

The City of Vancouver has approved our grant to raise awareness about homelessness This year we will be partnering with the Kingsway Continental (old Ramada Inn Hotel on King-sway). Seventy-one tenants (mostly seniors) moved from the decommissioned Old Conti-nental building in Downtown South into their new home at the Kingsway Continental. Among them were local residents that were homeless or at risk of homelessness. The hotel was converted into 123 units of non-market housing.
Our role is to welcome and support our new neighbours by providing ongoing move-in welcome packages containing basic dishes, cutlery, dish towels, etc. Here’s where you come in – please bring forks, knives and/or spoos, dishtowels or extra kitchen utensils and we will have them nicely packaged to deliver to our new residents. The deadline is August 30th. Please be part of our acts of kindness, you’ll feel great about helping other seniors.
