Page 2 Note: There were 5,650 responses to the family survey, identifying 9,140 students by grade level. There were 2,666 responses to the staff survey with some staff members at multiple locations and levels. In the results, family and staff responses are repeated within the applicable school level and location reporting groups.

The Arlington Public Schools (APS) Department of Planning and Evaluation administered surveys to all APS staff, students in grades 4 – 12, and families with students in Grades PreK – 12 on behalf of offices in a variety of APS departments. Results are being used to inform decisions about future APS operations. About the Surveys

• Staff Survey o Opened on June 3, 2020 and closed on June 10, 2020 o 2,666 survey responses o Some staff members have multiple work locations and/or grade levels

• Student Survey o Opened on June 3, 2020 and closed on June 10, 2020 o Available in English and Spanish o 5,698 survey responses o Some students attend multiple school locations

• Family Survey o Opened on June 8, 2020 and closed on June 15, 2020 o Available in Amharic, Arabic, English, Mongolian, and Spanish o 5,650 survey responses o Some parents/guardians have students at multiple schools and/or grade levels

To assist the Return to School Task Force, staff have separated results for the survey into two reports including

• Reopening Input

• Distance Learning Experience This report focuses on questions about APS operations. A separate report will focus on APS instruction. When a result could fall into both categories, it will appear in both reports.

Page 3 Note: There were 5,650 responses to the family survey, identifying 9,140 students by grade level. There were 2,666 responses to the staff survey with some staff members at multiple locations and levels. In the results, family and staff responses are repeated within the applicable school level and location reporting groups.

• The surveys were distributed using an open link. It was possible to submit multiple responses to each survey. This might occur, for example, if two parents/guardians separately completed the survey for one student.

• When a question was skipped or blank, it was removed from reporting.

• Percentages may not add to 100% due to rounding.

• H-B Woodlawn Secondary Program has been reported in the high school reporting group in this report.

• Trends identified in short answer responses have been compiled in this report when there were clear trends in the data. Some reporting has been adjusted to allow better decision making by the Return to School Task Force. For example, some students used the free response section on question about internet service to list an alternate name for a cable internet provider rather than the name listed on the survey. The response rates about cable interent service were adjusted to reflect this and allow for better decision making.

• Additional analysis is ongoing.

• Full comments will be published once responses are examined and personally identifiable information is redacted.

• This report, any required edits, other information regarding the surveys, and any additional reporting and analysis will be published on https://www.apsva.us/engage/planning-for-reopening-schools/
