• There was a switch from the Alibata to the Roman alphabet.

– nagged Spaniards with their literary works using their non-bloody and intellectual ways to demand equality and recognition

Long before the Spaniards landed on Philippine shores, our ancestors already had their own literature written in

ALIBATA varying from legends, epic, riddles, sayings, folk songs, etc.

During the Spanish period, ancient writings were prohibited ,

and thus, BURNED in the belief that they were “works of the devil”.

effect of repression of thought and speech under the Spanish regime.

August 13, 1898• American soldiers came to supposedly liberate the Filipinos from the clutches of the

Spanish conquerors – Battle of Manila.

1900s• English was at first taught as a subject as the Spanish system of

education was allowed to continue.

• English became the medium of instruction in all

Philippine schools.

Thomasites• Teachers of English

numbering 600 sailed on the

ship SS Thomas from San Francisco to Manila on July 1, 1901.

• young idealist US Military teachers who introduced the first formal education in the country in 1906.

• Thus, considered as the Filipinos’ first teachers.

named after its founders, the Thomasites – the first teachers.

1901• The Philippine Normal School was founded to train Filipino

teachers to take charge of elementary education.

1908• The University of the Philippines (U.P.-Faura) was established to

train young Filipinos for tasks in the colonial bureaucracy– it was also the forerunner in the teaching of the English language– it became the center of literary effort

• Silliman University was also established.

– El Renacimiento: • founded in Manila by Rafael Palma in 1901.

– Philippines Free Press: • established in Manila in 1905
