Make at least three passes over the hole as you wrap the duct. This

will overlap each edge one time. Press the tape down firmly with a

putty knife, after each pass, to ensure a solid, airtight seal.

Cut the tape when the hole is wrapped using a pair of scissors. Dispose

of the waxpaper backing when finished.

Things You Will Need

Aluminum tape, Underwriters Laboratories 181 Approved

Putty knife

Mastic

Soapy dishwater solution

Bucket

Rag

Clean water

Scissors

Sheet metal patch

Selftapping sheet metal screws

Drill with appropriate driver bit

Sheet metal shears

Tip

There are several widths of tape to choose from. Twoinch, 3inch and 4

inch widths are common. Choose the width that easily covers the hole with

one pass.

A thin sheet metal patch can also be cut to fit the hole with sheet metal

shears. The patch is screwed into place with selftapping sheet metal screws,

and then mastic is applied along the edges to ensure an airtight seal.

For smaller holes, apply mastic like caulk. Push some mastic directly into

the hole for a quick and easy seal.

Warning

Sheet metal edges are sharp. When handling sheet metal, always wear

leather palm gloves.
