While members of the Te Awamutu Motor Vehicle Enthusiast Group enjoy
nothing better than driving their vin-tage and classic cars on club outings, the events they are involved in are also benefi ting other organisations.
Most recently club members fol-lowed up a most interesting club night
address by Ross Turner and Colin Pink-erton regarding their humanitarian work in Uganda by holding an auction night.
As a result the well supported auc-tion enabled the club to make a $400 donation to the pair to continue the good work.
Previously the club had received a $250 donation for displaying their
cars at the Mitavite Horse Show. They passed the donation onto the Te Awamutu Wheelchair wagon Trust.
The major fundraiser is the annual Classic Car Show, organised in con-junction with the Waikato Triumph Car Club, and held at Waipa Racecourse. This year $1750 was donated to the Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

WRC Rally opportunity too good to be missed
WRC’s Henning Solberg and Cato Menkerud negotiate the G Street corner at the last Superstage at Repco Rally New Zealand Mystery Creek headquarters. Munchi’s team-mates Federico Villagra and Jorge Perez Companc feature on the DriveBy cover at Waitomo. The number 9 and 10 cars fi nished eighth and
ninth respectively in this year’s event. Henning recorded the fastest time on the fi nal stage in the Ford Focus RS WRC just ahead of brother Petter Solberg and Philip Mills for Subaru. Rally New Zealand stages offer excellent spectator viewing and exciting racing between the best rally drivers in the world.

RX-8 geared up
Mazda has given the 2009 model Mazda RX-8 a number of enhancements
designed to provide owners with an even greater driving experience.
Engineers strove to enhance the driv-ing enjoyment that’s at the heart of the RX-8 experience by refi ning the REN-ESIS engine, whose naturally aspirated, free-revving operation up to 9,000 rpm realises exhilarating performance.
Two new transmissions, a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed electronic Ac-tivematic have been developed for the RX-8 based off the transmissions available for the MX-5. Some internal changes and alterations to the gear ra-tios were made so that the new trans-missions would work cohesively with the high-revving characteristics of the rotary engine.
The 6-speed activematic is a new electronically-controlled transmission – which delivers smooth and linear ac-celeration at all engine speeds. It also incorporates the newly-developed Di-rect Mode – allowing the driver, while
the car is in ‘Drive’ to instantaneously select the optimal gear for the driving circumstances .
The engine sits low and well back in the engine bay in a confi guration Mazda calls, advanced front-midship layout. This means that the new RX-8 maintains the original’s ideal 50:50 weight distribution, placing weight evenly over all four wheels and ensuring exceptional stability.
The chassis itself has been further strengthened to bolster rigidity and give the engine and suspension a tau-ter platform. This highly rigid body and modifi ed suspension enables sharp and linear vehicle response to steering inputs, and delivers the handling of a genuine sports car as well as the high-grade ride comfort expected of a re-fi ned four-seater.
In the current atmosphere of spiralling petrol prices, Mazda’s engineers chose not to increase the rotary engine’s peak power fi gure, but instead focused on improving the low to mid-range engine response and torque delivery.

More Mazda CX-7 for less
By Dean Taylor
Mazda has taken its already terrifi c crossover CX-7,
added a bunch of class-lead-ing safety features - then dropped the price by $5K.
It is hard not to notice Wilksbrooke Motors black CX-7 with its distinctive sporty ‘Mazda family’ styl-ing and sitting on 18” al-loys. And the great 2.3 litre Direct Injection Spark Ignition turbocharged engine
produces 174kW of power and 350Nm of torque - im-portantly at just 2,500rpm. That’s better than the rotary powered RX-8.
The powered is delivered through the six-speed Ac-tivematic transmission utilising Mazda’s Active Torque-Split All-Wheel Drive, a computer controlled coupling feeds up to 50% of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels as required for exceptional handling.
None of Mazda’s great
interior features and comforts have been lost in the new, lower priced model. Leather, sound system, versatility of load space and high quality fi nishes are maintained.
What has been added is reversing camera with a 7” colour widescreen display monitor installed into the audio fascia, with integrated touch-screen audio operation. Auxiliary audio controls are still retained on the steering wheel.
The camera is located near the tailgate handle area, im-mediately adjacent to the li-cence plate mounting points. The camera and rear view monitor display is activated when the shift lever is moved to reverse.
The camera provides an amazingly wide view of the rear of what is behind the ve-hicle.
Advanced performance goes hand in hand with ad-vanced safety. In fact the CX-7 achieved the highest possible rating, fi ve stars, in both frontal and side-impact crash tests in the US Gov-ernment National Highway Traffi c Safety Administration (NHSTA) tests.
The CX-7 has six airbags, Dynamic Stability Control, ABS and Electronic Brake-force Distribution.

World exclusiveNew kit car developed
SUBZILLA designer and builder Ken Brough (left) discussed aspects of ‘road legality’ for his new creation with Harry Duynhoven, Minister for Transport Safety.
If Te Awamutu’s Ken Brough has his way, the headlines on this story will be a reality.
Readers my remember his fabulous STI ATV, the turbocharged Subaru powered quad bike (inset) launched two years ago.
Mr Brough had always hoped that would be a commercial venture, but it lacked one vital ingredient - according to New Zealand offi cials it isn’t road legal.
Eventually he put that project aside and channelled both his knowledge and frustrations into a new project - Subzilla.
Much of the concept is similar to the STI ATV - it runs a Subaru turbocharged two litre boxer engine, fi ve speed Subaru transmission and Subaru 4WD.
But this time the thought was ‘kit car ’ - a road legal design that could be sold from knock down kit to fully
built car. This was a business decision, part of Mr Brough’s plan to recoup his investment in these projects and set up a future market.
His plan is to market Subzilla under the Brough Extreme vehicles banner (see www.bxv.co.nz).
To get on the right track he worked closely with Neil Fraser, an Auckland certifi er and builder of over 300 kit cars of his own design.

The success of New Zealand’s international rally is a combina-tion of numerous factors – none
less important than the contribution of a huge number of volunteers.
Te Awamutu’s Thomson family has a long association with motorsport, which is continuing through the generations.
Maurice Thomson Motors owner Maurice Thomson holds a voluntary position as a technical offi cer as part of Motorsport New Zealand’s technical team – a position he has held for more than a decade.
There are about 20 technical offi c-ers who work at motorsport events as part of the scrutineering teams looking at more technical issues, especially eli-gibility.
He also enjoys participating as much as time and budget will allow, and sup-
ports his son Blair in his racing ambi-tions.
But, he says, motorsport is an ex-pensive hobby if you are a competitive person like him, so working as an offi cial is both a way of staying involved and giving something back to the sport.
For Repco Rally New Zealand Mr Thomson was part of the scrutineering team involving about 20 Waikato peo-ple, including Mark Empson - origi-nally from Te Awamutu.
Repco Rally New Zealand scruti-neers are allocated a variety of tasks designed to ensure everyone is follow-ing the rules.
Some are attached to a WRC team, some monitor the strict tyre regime of international rallies, some monitor ve-hicle weights, some track equipment used on the vehicles.
Mr Thomson was attached to the Stobart VK M-Sport Ford Rally Team and was part of the safety team.
His initial task pre-event was to check safety equipment, such as hel-mets, apparel and harnesses.
He says being attached to a WRC team is great because you see how the world’s best motorsport teams operate, always learn new techniques and are one step ahead of the general motoring industry in terms of new performance and safety developments.
Being involved in motorsport himself there is always something he can learn and apply to his own vehicles.
He says it is fantastic to be able to get so close to the machines and peo-ple who build and work on them and he especially enjoys the technical side of what goes into a racecar.
And he says motorsport is still the proving ground for future ideas that fi nd their way into standard production cars that will be in his workshop in the future.
He says most of the team personnel are great – especially the English teams – so it is a congenial workplace even in the heat of competition.
Mr Thomson says generally WRC teams are self regulating because there is so much at stake.
He says if there is a breach it is usu-ally human error, not intentional.
WRC teams make declarations about their race programmes and equipment and a great deal of trust is placed in their integrity.
Still it is up to the scrutineers to keep them honest.
Mr Thomson says his job involves
monitoring, observing and recording any work done on the cars during service parks at parc fi rme.
Any changes to components are checked against the regulations.
WRC rules state how many parts can be used in an event, and these are sealed, tagged and coded and can be checked at any time during the event.
Tyre rules also apply. Teams use a con-trol tyre and nominate before the event which compound they wish to use.
They are allocated their tyres, which all carry barcodes, and at any time these can be scanned for compliance.
Mr Thomson says any breach is serious and at the least will incur a fi nancial pen-alty, but if it involves breaching weight or tyre regulations, will most likely involve exclusion.
When his team was racing he would help other scrutineers working ‘generally’ with other race classes.
As part of the safety role, he would also inspect damaged vehicles, monitor repairs and work with the teams to ad-dress any safety issues.
He says initially it is up to the teams to race a safe vehicle and scrutineers are a back-up in the decision making process.
The downside for scrutineers, espe-cially those who love motorsport like Mr Thomson, is that they don’t see much live race action.
But he does enjoy the New Zealand set up with all WRC teams under one roof with spectator viewing areas.
He says this Kiwi innovation has now been adopted with success by some of the other international rallies.
Volunteering to give back something to motorsport
RALLY New Zealand scrutineering team member Maurice Thomson catching up at his ‘real job’.
The Machell family are a keen motoring bunch – enjoying their own classic and street machine
cars and supporting many forms of mo-torsport.
As in the past, John Machell took time out of his Farmline business to volunteer for Repco Rally New Zealand.
He was assigned to assist chief timing marshal John Holland, who has been with Rally NZ for 36 years.
The two Johns were in charge of mak-ing sure every aspect of the timing of the event was perfect – especially as titles (like last year ’s Rally NZ) can be won or lost on tenths of a second.
Mr Machell says, to be fair, it was the other John in charge of the timing and was ‘the boy’.
But it was a crucial role. The pair had fi ve lines of communica-
tion with race offi cials to maintain, the visited the start and fi nish of every stage to make sure every aspect of timing equipment was up to scratch and they have to make sure back-up systems are in place in case of failure.
Mrs Machell says it was exciting to be so up close to the high-tech world of WRC organisation.
He says it is a very serious business, but can also be fun.
And he was one of the lucky volunteers who actually got to see some racing.
SHARED SUCCESSHe says John (Holland) made sure
we stayed around long enough to see the top drivers through to eventual top Kiwi Hayden Paddon (Farmline is one of the team’s sponsors) before heading to the next stage.
Mr Machell says there were probably 10 timing crews of seven or eight vol-unteers and most would have seen very little, if any, race action.
It was also exciting to see the racer
he supports come through to take top Kiwi honours.
Paddon was a wildcard entry, but had a very consistent event.
In the end it was the consistency that gave him the win and a good overall placing.
It also gives him the New Zealand rally Series title with a meeting to go, the youngest driver to achieve this.
Paddon also earned the right to compete in another international rally and his Mitsubishi Evo9 has already been shipped for him to compete in Malaysia.
Mr Machell says it is a credit to the young man that he is still committed to competing in the last round of the New Zealand Cham-pionship in Nelson despite not needing the points.
The team is readying his old Mitsubishi Evo8, with begged, borrowed and stolen parts, for that event before he heads overseas.
Chance to get inside hi-tech WRC world
PODIUM fi nish as top Kiwis for wildcard entries Hayden Paddon and John Kennard was very satisfying for the Machell family.

Subzilla - the homegrown kit car creationFrom page 5.
Mr Brough says the aim was to make sure compliance issues were identifi ed and corrected during the build proc-ess. However, there is no guarantee and now Subzilla is completed, there will still be a nervous wait for its owner until the low volume vehicle assessors release their deci-sion.
Technically Subzilla is simple according to Mr Brough. He says it needed to be so it could be reproduced.
The wheel track and wheelbase is identical to the origi-nal Subaru Impreza donor car. He drew a fl oorpan design to see if everything needed would fi t, then built the chassis and worked up.
Being a fan of all forms of motorpsort, Mr Brough took inspiration from F1 for the design, going for the F1 look rounded cockpit with frontal extension.
He had to modify the suspension and steering. The front features a push rod and rocker system with coil over units mounted longitudally. The rear is a cantilever push rod system.
In practical testing the system works well and the car handles as expected.
The engine has been given a mild tune at this stage
- but the 178kW is more than enough to give exceptional performance to a vehicle weighing around 750kg.
Mr Brough says as testing progresses there is more than enough room left to push the performance higher.
Body panel plugs were all made by Mr Brough and manufactured in fi breglass in Subaru Rally Blue.
Subzilla had pride of place, along with STI ATV, at the Repco Rally New Zealand - sitting astride the television interview stage in the main public hall alongside the WRC service hall.
Mr Brough says it created plenty of interest, and hope-fully his chance meeting with Minister for Transport Safety Harry Duynhoven will also have a positive infl uence.
Mr Duynhoven commented that the car was ‘absolutely brilliant’ - ‘I love it’.
Subaru World Rally Team star Petter Solberg is also a fan of Subzilla and STI ATV. Mr Brough caught up with Solberg at the rally and the Norwegian former World rally Champion has requested images for his website.
SUBZILLA builder wants to see his creation ‘on the road’.

Honda’s Tourer superb
BY DEAN TAYLOR
It’s easy to write about Honda’s Accord Euro Tourer - its every-thing that was great about the Ac-
cord Euro packed into a stunning new estate, station wagon (call it what you will) body.
Honda call it Tourer, because this is a vehicle designed to be taken places. It marks the return of a wagon to the Accord range after more than a dec-ade.
It basically comes in one, high-spec form - then gets better.
The ‘L’ features leather interior, sun-roof, power front seats, 10 speaker audio system, 17” alloys, six airbags, front fog lights and a host of safety, performance and handling equipment designed to make it a great drive.
The ‘N’ model adds satellite navi-gation and reversing camera. Add the Sport features to get front sports bump-er and grille and side and rear skirts.
Ingham Honda has the new Tourer available to test drive alongside the new Euro - and it is superb.
The 2.4litre 16-valve DOHC i-
VTEC engine develops 148kW of power and 234Nm maximum torque.
Honda’s design gives the driver the versatility of more storage if required, with the driveability of the car.
And the transmission is great - fi ve speed automatic for touring - but with the fl ick of a steering wheel mounted paddle, all the benefi ts of electronic manual.
The Tourer has a modern, European look and the classy interior and great sound system makes it a wonderful drive.
