Replacement Credit- Hotel Rwanda Hotel Rwanda depicts the story of the genocide that took place in Rwanda during the early 1990s. In 1994 the Rwandan president’s plane was shot down and he was killed. This ignited the horrific genocide that followed. Hotel Rwanda focuses on the story of Paul Rusesabagina. Rusesabagina is a hotel manager who helped to save and protect the lives of over a thousand people. I found the movie to be shocking and disturbing, yet hopeful. It shows just how wicked humanity can be but also shows those who are compassionate. This is the type of movie that everyone should watch and learn from, so that similar conflicts can be avoided. Hotel Rwanda shows what happens when ethnic conflict becomes uncontrollable. The division between the Hutus and Tutsi populations had been building over many years. The film even mentioned how European colonialism is to blame for the division. Rwanda used to be a colony belonging to Belgium. Belgium rulers would often favor the taller and skinner Tutsis over the stocky Hutus and this rift last long after Belgium left. After the Hutu gained majority of the control over the government, they would blame the Tutsis who were the minority group in the country. The death of the Hutu president was blamed on Tutsis rebels and the chaos started. Hutus rallied for other Hutus to kill all the Tutsis as a way to ethnically cleanse Rwanda of the tribe. The Hutu were tired of being thought of as less than the Tutsis, so they decided to kill them and drive them out. In Hotel Rwanda the Hutu army calls them “Tutsi cockroaches” and rallies all the Hutu to exterminate them. This difference between tribes did exist before the Europeans arrived but there was not this extreme hatred from both sides. The idea of a
