Analysis of Hotel RwandaTRANSCRIPT
Replacement Credit- Hotel RwandaHotel Rwanda depicts the story of the genocide that took place in Rwanda during the early 1990s. In 1994 the Rwandan presidents plane was shot down and he was killed. !his ignited the horrific genocide that followed. Hotel Rwanda focuses on the story of "aul Rusesa#agina. Rusesa#agina is a hotel manager who helped to sa$e and protect the li$es of o$er a thousand people. I found the mo$ie to #e shocking and distur#ing% yet hopeful. It shows &ust how wicked humanity can #e #ut also shows those who are compassionate. !his is the type of mo$ie that e$eryone should watch and learn from% so that similar conflicts can #e a$oided. Hotel Rwanda shows what happens when ethnic conflict #ecomes uncontrolla#le. !he di$ision #etween the Hutus and !utsi populations had #een #uilding o$er many years. !he film e$en mentioned how 'uropean colonialism is to #lame for the di$ision. Rwanda used to #e a colony #elonging to (elgium. (elgium rulers would often fa$or the taller and skinner !utsis o$erthe stocky Hutus and this rift last long after (elgium left. )fter the Hutu gained ma&ority of the control o$er the go$ernment% they would #lame the !utsis who were the minority group in the country. !he death of the Hutu president was #lamed on !utsis re#els and the chaos started. Hutus rallied for other Hutus to kill all the !utsis as a way to ethnically cleanse Rwanda of the tri#e.I found it #affling that #ecause of 'uropean imperialism this di$ision #etween the two tri#es was so intense. (elgium had actually created a di$ision so deep that it lasted for decades &ust #ecause of some physical differences and #y treating the !utsis #etter. !he Hutu were tired of #eing thought of as less than the !utsis% so they decided to kill them and dri$e them out. In Hotel Rwanda the Hutu army calls them *!utsi cockroaches+ and rallies all the Hutu to e,terminate them. !his difference #etween tri#es did e,ist #efore the 'uropeans arri$ed #ut there was not this e,treme hatred from #oth sides. !he idea of a superior race de$eloped #ecause of the 'uropeans racist #elief. !he 'uropeans insisted that they were #ringing education and wisdom to these *sal$ages+ #ut instead they #rought racism. )ll sides are to #lame in this situation though #ecause each group used the situation to their ad$antages and e,ploited each other whene$er they could. It was only a matter of time until the suppressed Hutu or !utsis re#elled against each other. I was most disappointed when I found out the -nited .ations did nothing to help. .o#ody from outside of Rwanda really tried to help and e$en sometimes denied that genocide was taking place. !hose who had the power and a#ilities to try to stop it chose instead to let thousands die and ga$e no effort in trying to get refugees out. /$erall% I thought the mo$ie was insightful and #eautifully done.!o know that "aul Rusesa#agina used his influence and e$en puthis own life in danger to sa$e #oth Hutu and !utsis refugees is ama0ing. It shows that there is always a sli$er of humanity in e$en the most horrendous situations.
