Event : Faculty Seminar On “Damping behavior of Cellulose coated Kevlar fiber polymer composites” Date : 8/9/2016 Presented BY : Prof. Santosh S. Venue : CAMD Lab
ABSTRACT of the Presentation: This work aims to evaluate damping properties of cellulose
coated Kevlar fiber reinforced epoxy hybrid laminates using dynamic mechanical analysis
(DMA).DMA results reveal higher storage modulus for the laminate samples. Loss modulus and
tan delta values decrease as compared to the pristine Kevlar composite samples. This shows
that by coating low stiffness cellulose on Kevlar fiber in small percentages yields good damping
properties.

3) Prof. K S Pujari
1) Prof. K S Pujari has presented a paper titled " Application of Taguchi technique and utility concept
in solving the multi objective problem in GTAW of AA-7075 T6 Al alloy," in National conference On
Progresses and research in Mechanical Engineering on 10th of September held at SDM Dharwad.
Abstract: Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) is mainly characterized by the weld pool
geometry. This is because the weld pool geometry plays a vital role in determining the
mechanical properties of the weld joint. In this paper, the selection of process parameters for
obtaining optimal weld pool geometry in the GTAW of AA 7075-T6 aluminium alloy is
presented. The traditional Taguchi method is widely used for optimizing the process
parameters of a single response problem. Optimization of a single response leads to non
optimum values for remaining responses. But, the efficiency of the fabricated products is
frequently evaluated by several quality responses. Under such conditions, multi response

optimization is the solution to optimize multi responses simultaneously. A multi characteristics
response optimization model based on Taguchi and Utility concept is used to optimize AC pulse
GTAW process parameters, such as peak current, base current, frequency, pulse on time, gas
flow rate and welding speed on multiple performance characteristics, namely, weld pool
geometry parameters such as penetration, face width, and back width. The experimental result
analysis showed that optimal process parameters of AC pulse GTAW are essential to achieve
simultaneous maximization of penetration and minimization of face width and back width. The
ANOVA is used to determine significant factors and developed predictive model and its
adequacy is checked with confirmation tests. Further NDT (Radiography test) is conducted as
per ASTM E 155 and it is found that no crack, less porosity and it is acceptable.
2) Prof. K S Pujari has published a paper titled "Optimization of GTAW process parameters for
improving the mechanical properties of AA7075-T6 weldments" in Springer Link pp 187 - 195 on 18th
of September 2016
Abstract : This work mainly pertains in the mechanical properties of AA 7075-T6 Aluminums
alloy welds through gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process. Design of experimental
technique Taguchi was applied to optimize GTAW process parameters of AA 7075-T6 aluminum
alloy welded joints for improving the mechanical properties. Mathematical model was
developed by regression. Adequacy of developed model was checked by analysis of variance.
The effect of heat treat on mechanical properties was also studied and an improvement in the
mechanical properties was also studied and an improvement in the mechanical properties was
observed. Metallographic of heat treated and non-heat treated welded joints correlated with
the mechanical properties.
4) Prof Shankar B.
Prof. Shankar B has presented a paper titled " Flame shapes and heat transfer characteristics of an
impinging flame jet." in International Conference On Recent Advances in Engineering Sciences
(ICRAES-2016)" on 10th of September held at MSRIT Bengalore.
Abstract : Experiments were conducted on premixed LPG/air circular flame jet impinging normally on a rectangular flat surface. The heat transfer characteristics and flame shapes have been studied by varying the different parameters like equivalence ratio (0.8, 1, 1.2 and 1.4) and Reynolds number (500, 600, 800, 1000, 1200 and 1500). A circular flame jet impinged on to water cooled calorimeter made up of spiral rings. The increase in the height of the fame was observed by increasing both Reynolds number and equivalence ratio. The heat flux was increased by increasing the Reynolds number and also by increasing equivalence ratio.

5) Prof Naveen C S
Prof. Naveen C S has presented a paper titled " experimental investigation of local heat transfer
charactristics of synthetic air jet for different nozzle configuration" in International Conference
on Development of Smart Cities on 9th Sept 2016 held at Dr. AIT Bengaluru.
Abstract : A synthetic jet is commonly formed when fluid is alternately sucked into and
ejected from a small cavity by the motion of a diaphragm bounding the cavity, so that there is
no net mass addition to the system. Now a days thermal over stressing is one of the major
problem in electronic components. Due to low cost, availability and reliability, synthetic jet will
be used as a working fluid. objective of the work is To study the heat transfer characteristic of
impinging synthetic jet on the target plate for various frequency range between 60Hz-180Hz,
Orifice diameter 4 & 6mm and jet to surface distance (Z/d) 1 to 12.
6) Prof. Naveen S Hiremath
Prof. Naveen S Hiremath has presented a paper titled " Experimental investigation of local heat
transfer characteristics on the concave curved surface due to an impingement of a circular air
jet " in International Conference on Development of Smart Cities on 9th Sept 2016 held at Dr.
AIT Bengaluru.
Abstract : The distribution of local heat transfer coefficients produced by an
impingement of a submerged circular air jet on a cylindrical concave surface are investigated
experimentally. The experimental model of the present study mimics the scaled-up gas-turbine
blade, which is cooled at its leading edge by jet impingement. The ratio of concave surface
diameter to nozzle diameter (D/d) of 3.2 and the nozzle length to nozzle diameter ratio (l/d) of
52.9 are considered. The study is performed by varying the jet to plate distance (Z/d = 0.5, 1, 2,
and 3) and the jet Reynolds number based on the nozzle exit diameter between 12500 and
47500. The jet is made to impinge on a semi-circular concave surface made of thin foil of
stainless steel. The local heat transfer coefficients are estimated using thermal images obtained
by infrared thermal imaging technique. The results show the increase in heat transfer
coefficients with increase in Reynolds number. The secondary peaks observed are seen to shift
towards stagnation point with decrease of Z/d. At high Reynolds number, heat transfer
coefficients at secondary peak are found to be more than the stagnation point heat transfer
coefficients.

STAFF ACHIEVEMENT :
Prof. Shanklar Badiger :
Prof. Shanklar Badiger has presented a paper titled " Effects of Reynolds number and
equivalence ratio on flame shapes " International Conference On Recent Innovations in
Engineering held on October-8th and 9th 2016.
Abstract:
It is very important to study the flame characteristic for different operating characteristic. The
experimental studies have been performed to investigate the flame characteristics. The
premixed Air/LPG flame was observed. The flame shapes were observed by varying both the
equivalence ratio and the Reynolds numbers. Increased in both equivalence ratio and Reynolds
numbers the soot formation in the flame was observed.
