Summary
Punjab Biodiversity Board is persistently undertaking various activities to conserve and
document the biodiversity of the state. The 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP-11) the
Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was scheduled to be held in India (Hyderabad) from 8th to 19th
October, 2012. Hosting of COP-11 by India, provided an excellent opportunity to bring national focus
on biodiversity and create mass awareness on various issues pertaining to it. Accordingly, Punjab
Biodiversity Board (PBB) in collaboration with Punjab State Council for Science & Technology and
Department of Education, Punjab and with the financial support National Biodiversity Authority, Govt. of
India, had organized Biodiversity Festival 2012 in Punjab by conducting two contests on biodiversity as
per the following details:
A) Documentation of Local Biodiversity by School Students
A unique contest on “Documentation of local biodiversity” by school students was organized by
Punjab Biodiversity Board. The entries were invited through District Science Supervisors (DSS) for the
contest from school students at block level. The main objective of the programme was to make
students aware about their local biological resources through documen1tation and to motivate &
encourage them to take concerted actions to conserve it. The participating students (Class VIII to XII)
were required to document their local biodiversity (block level) in the prescribed format (PBR template
provided by NBA) in English or Punjabi. The information on locally available plants, crops, fruit trees,
medicinal plants, domesticated & wild animals, birds etc. was to be enlisted along with their uses and
associated traditional knowledge (TK). The students were advised to take help of teachers, elders in
the family or experts in preparing the lists for their locality. Cash prizes for the district and state level
winners were announced as per following details:-
District level:- 1000/- and 500/- for 1st & 2nd prize, respectively for each district and the same will be considered for state level contest

Total 314 entries from 217 schools of 81 blocks of 20 districts comprising approximate 1000
were received by PBB.
Three committees with one expert each from Botany, Zoology & Agriculture were constituted to
evaluate the received entries to select district and state level winners for cash awards and certificate.

PBB had invited entries for preparation of state biodiversity mascot depicting aspects of the
floral/faunal/domesticated or cultural biodiversity of Punjab along with associated slogan/message from
school students and general public through newspaper advertisement with cash prize of Rs.10,000/- for
the winners of each category along with a memento and certificate. Total 169 entries comprising 139

Introduction
The variety of genes, species and ecosystems which encompass populations, communities &
habitats constitute biological diversity. It forms the foundation upon which human civilization depends.
Biological resources are essential for maintaining the basic processes on which life depends and a key
to sustainable development. Bio-resources provide food, medicine and products of commercial and non
commercial use and also maintain life by providing environmental services like, air & water quality, soil
fertility, pest and disease control, waste disposal etc. Increasing human population, industrialization,
intensive agricultural & animal husbandry practices and over-exploitation of natural resources are,
however, leading to loss of biological resources.
With only 2.5% of land area of the world, India accounts for 7.8% of the global recorded species
especially because of its varied physiography, diverse climatic conditions and a variety of habitats. It is
one of the top 12 mega biodiversity countries and has 4 of 35 biodiversity hot spots in biodiversity rich
areas of the Western Ghats, Himalayas, Sundalands (Nicobar Islands) and Indo-Burma. The country is
estimated to have 49,000 plant species and 81,000 animal species representing 12.5% of the world’s
flora and 6.6% of its fauna. Punjab is one of the smaller states of India with an area of 50,362 sq. km
located in the north western part of the country. 84% of the State area is under agriculture. The State
traditionally had wide domesticated diversity of plants and animals but with intensive cultivation and
emphasis on high yielding varieties, the diversity in the farm sector has decreased considerably.
Though the state has only 6% area under forests, however, 1897 Angiosperms, 48 Pteridophytes, 34
Bryophytes, 948 Fungi and 397 Algae have been reported in the wild. Amongst faunal diversity the
state is especially rich in birds (428 species) and fishes (131 species) population.
Habitat destruction due to pressures of intensive agriculture, urbanization and industrialization is
causing serious threat to the biodiversity of the state. In order to conserve biodiversity (including
agriculture biodiversity), ensure its sustainable use and fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising out
of biological resources, the Punjab Government notified Punjab Biodiversity Board on 23rd December
2004 as a statutory body.
4
Biodiversity Board (PBB) in collaboration with Punjab State Council for Science & Technology and
Department of Education, Punjab and with the financial support National Biodiversity Authority, Govt. of
India, had organized a biodiversity festival in Punjab by conducting two contests on biodiversity as per
the following details:
1. Documentation of local biodiversity by school students
2. Preparation of Biodiversity Mascot of Punjab
