Millwood School to be new Kindergarten Center
The Washington State Legislature has designated funds to reduce class size for kindergarten through third grade beginning with the 2016-17 school year.
Having fewer students in each class creates a need for additional class-room space. A committee of stakeholder representatives was formed in September to study the options for creating the necessary classroom space. After months of research, staff presentations, and a public forum, the committee completed their work and made a recommendation to the school board to repurpose Millwood Early Childhood Center into a dis-trict kindergarten center.
The School Board voted unanimously to take advantage of the funding to reduce class size and repurpose Millwood to house the district kinder-garten students. Kindergarten students will attend the Millwood Kinder-garten Center at 8818 E. Grace beginning with the 2016-17 school year.
After diligent research and extensive planning for the transition, an agreement has been reached with St. Paschal Parish to house the district Preschool programs in their vacant school building. Our youngest students will attend the West Valley Early Learning Center at 2523 Park Road beginning with the 2016-17 school year. .
Truancy Board Honored
The West Valley Community Truancy Board has been awarded the district Community Leadership award. For the past 10 years the award winning board has been helping truant youth in a successful, proactive and positive manner. The intervention from the board entails efforts to avoid formal adjudication and processing in the juvenile court system and provide resources needed to overcome barriers to school attendance and success. One of the boards greatest strengths is the combined participation of community resources which include school administrators, teachers, counselors, para-professionals, volunteers and community organizations/agencies. The Truancy Board has been identified by WSU as a “Promising Practice” and has been replicated in numerous counties in Washington and 16 counties across the country. Truancy board members were honored at a regional Community Leaders luncheon.
