A Study On Consumer Awareness And Consumer

Perception About Auto Manual Transmission Cars"

A semi-automatic transmission (SAT) (also known as a clutch-less manual

transmission, automated manual transmission, floppy-paddle gearbox, or paddle-

shift gearbox) is an automobile transmission that does not change gears

automatically, but rather facilitates manual gear changes by dispensing with the

need to press a clutch pedal at the same time as changing gears. t uses electronic

sensors, pneumatics, processors and actuators to execute gear shifts on input from

the dri!er or by a computer. This remo!es the need for a clutch pedal which the

dri!er otherwise needs to depress before making a gear change, since the clutch

itself is actuated by electronic e"uipment which can synchronies the timing andtor"ue re"uired to make "uick, smooth gear shifts. The system was designed by

automobile manufacturers to pro!ide a better dri!ing experience through fast

o!ertaking maneu!ers on highways. Some motorcycles also use a system with a

con!entional gear change but without the need for manual clutch operation.

A#T or Automated #anual Transmission automatic gear cars are the latest trend in

ndia. The first model of an A#T auto geared car was the #aruti $elerio which was

a hit with ndian car buyers. %ow more car models in ndia are coming out with

A#T !ersions of their car models.

Automated #anual Transmission commonly called A#T is basically a manual

transmission car in which the operation of the clutch and the gear changing is done

automatically with the help of a computeri&ed electro-hydraulic mechanism. An

A#T car will not ha!e a clutch and the gear le!er will only ha!e the options of

%eutral, 'e!erse and orward. There is also the control to up shift or downshift the

gear manually with the *- option.

The up shift or downshift *- option on the gear le!er helps to select the gear, for

example when you want to o!ertake you can shift to a lower gear (from +th to rd

gear for example) ust by tapping the A#T gear shift stick. ou press the

accelerator and re! up the engine at the lower gear and you will get the necessary

    acceleration re"uired to o!ertake.

  • 8/18/2019 report DS 3

    2/21

Another !ery important ad!antage of an A#T automatic car is that the A#T car

will not roll backwards when you stop and go on an uphill slope. n a manual car

you ha!e to be an expert using the clutch and brakes together to a!oid rolling

backwards when you stop and start on an upwards slope.

Added to all these ad!antages of the A#T car, is the fact that an A#T auto gear car

actually gi!es better mileage than a manual car. This is because the electronic brain

of the A#T auto gear car is a much better dri!er than any of us and knows exactly

when to change gears and sa!e on petrol or diesel.

According to proection by A#T maker #agneti #arelli, /01 of the total

passenger !ehicles sold in ndia will ha!e A#T by /0/0.

Automated manual transmission (A#T) has made "uite a bu&& in the ndian

automobile market, with a number of manufacturers adopting the technology. As the

name suggests, it is a mechanism that automates manual transmission. 2ere are

some important things you should know about A#T3

    4. A#T is not a clutch-less solution. t has a clutch but there is no clutch pedal.

/. t is a low-cost solution that is also con!enient, which is why it has been used in

race cars such as errari as early as 4567.

. A#T is a kit that can be added to any manual transmission.+. The A#T kit can only be factory-fitted.

    8. The mechanism has two maor parts - a hydraulic system and an electronic

    control unit.

    7. A#T operates on the manual transmission of car in the way a dri!er would3 it

engages and disengages the clutch and gears. t also has a sports mode, which

enables dri!ers to mo!e to manual transmission.

    9. t is con!enient for car manufacturers because it doesn:t replace the manual

transmission, unlike the automatic transmission system, which is entirely different.

    6. According to A#T maker #agneti #arelli, /01 of the passenger !ehicles sold in

    ndia will ha!e A#T by /0/0.

  • 8/18/2019 report DS 3

    3/21

    5. A#T is more fuel efficient than manual transmission, unlike automatic

transmission, which reduces efficiency by up to 401, in most cases.

    40. The cost differential between manual transmission and A#T is 's +0,000 to 's

    80,000 in ndia.

Why Do We Need Transmission System?

;efore we di!e into details, transmission is a part of the car which connects the

    engine to the wheels.

  • 8/18/2019 report DS 3

    4/21

    !ons

Tiresome in stop and go traffic

@ear shift speed depends on dri!er prowess, and some may not be able to

extract the maximum out of the car.

    What is utomatic Transmission System?

    !on#entional automatic transmission system

n automatic transmission, there are again gears like we ha!e in manual, but in this

case, instead of con!entional clutch, there is an automatic mechanism called tor"ue

con!erter which works with some fluids and turbine mechanism (will not go in its

    details here).

  • 8/18/2019 report DS 3

    5/21

$lutch-less transmission is almost the same at the manual transmission, but in this

case, the clutch operation is automated. ?ike the manual transmission system, gear

has to be selected by the dri!er only depending on his*her selection, he*she has to

change the gears, but without operating the clutch le!er. n this case, an

electronically controlled (microprocessor based) system is used to identify when the

dri!er changes the gear, an electrically operated (power operated) system depressesthe clutch automatically when the gear is changed. The components of the system

are almost same as manual transmission, ust than an automated clutch mechanism

is added to it for the comfort of the dri!er. The most tiring part of a manual

transmission is to operate the clutch le!er, once that it eliminated the effort is

reduced to ust selecting and changing gears. n nutshell, it takes out the tiring part

of the dri!ing from the manual transmission and still lea!es the choice of changing

gears with the dri!er. Bne such system called e$lutch has been de!eloped by ;oschwhich works on the same principles.

    Pros

reedom from operating the clutch le!er

    >ery comfortable for stop and go traffic

;etter mileage than automatic transmission (less transmission losses)

    ?ower cost than automatic transmission

    !ons

    #ore expensi!e than manual transmission

     %ot widely a!ailable

What re (ther lternati#es? Dual !lutch utomatics?

f cost of the transmission can be o!erlooked (such as in performance or luxury

cars), there are e!en better systems which are a!ailable. These systems cars called

=ual-$lutch Automatic transmission systems. These are generally e"ually or more

expensi!e than the con!entional automatic systems, but they are really good in

terms of efficiency as well as performance. The way they operate is that instead of

one, they use two-clutches which connect with e!en and odd number of gears.

input and many other factors). After selecting the gear, the system automatically

engages that gear in almost no time as it has two clutches, so one clutch is dis-

engaged and other is engaged. This process is !ery fast, efficient and comfortable to

use, but since it in!ol!ed more components and electronics, it is more expansi!e

than all other which are mentioned abo!e.

Some such examples are =@S automatic transmission from >olkswagen and =ual

    $lutch automatic system by ord.

    Pros

    >ery comfortable for any kind of traffic

;etter mileage than automatic transmission (sometimes better than manuals)

;etter performance as gear shifts are fastest compared to other systems

    !ons

#ore expensi!e than all other transmission systems (for now)

     %ot widely a!ailable

    What is !)T utomatic Transmission

$>T stands for $ontinuously >ariable Transmission and is an efficient automatic

gear system for cars. The basic principal of the working of a $>T or $ontinuously>ariable Transmission is of continuously !arying the diameter of the belt coupled

    dri!ing and dri!en pulleys.

$>T is one of the best types of Automatic gear transmission system for a car and

gi!es better fuel mileage than other automatic transmissions. n fact the fuel

economy in a $>T automatic car is better than same model manual cars. %issan car

company has been at the forefront of de!eloping $>T automatic transmission

technology, though most car manufacturers ha!e their own $>T gear boxes. %issan

in ndia offer $>T transmissions on their car models like the #icra and Sunny.

Is a manual car better than an automatic car in India

The "uestion :which car is better automatic or manual in ndia: is in the minds of

most new car buyers in ndia .

  • 8/18/2019 report DS 3

    7/21

latest automatic cars in ndia ha!e newer types of automatic gears like A#T

transmission, =ual clutch transmission and $>T transmission . The fuel economy

of new generation automatic cars are as good as, if not better than manual

transmission cars. The regular automatic cars ha!e Tor"ue $on!erter type automatic

gear transmission which does ha!e a slightly lesser mileage .

In India the manual gear stick shift model cars are cheaper than

the automatic versions of the same model cars A few years ago

this di!erence between the price of Manual and Automatic cars in

India was more than a lakh of "upees# but now the price di!erence

between Automatic and Manual versions of the same model cars ha!e

come down drastically, especially for the new types of Automatic  cars known as

    A#T or Automated #anual Transmission .

The main ad!antage of an automatic car is the dri!ing comfort. An automatic car

does not ha!e a clutch pedal. Bnce you start dri!ing an automatic car in traffic ams

you realise what you ha!e been missing all these years. ou don:t ha!e to change

gears or use the clutch e!ery few seconds in an automatic car. This dri!ing comfort

of an automatic car in a traffic am has to be experienced for you to know what you

ha!e been missing. %o more being so tired while dri!ing through the constant

traffic ams in the $ities of ndia, because you do not ha!e to be pressing the clutch

and changing gears all the time.

The present generation of automatic cars a!ailable in ndia are only slightly more

expensi!e than the manual !ersion of the same model car, but the ad!antages you

gain is a lot by way of dri!ing comfort. Another big ad!antage of Automatic cars is

that the car will not roll backwards on an uphill slope when you stop and then want

to mo!e forward. n a manual car you ha!e to be an expert to a!oid the car from

going backwards when you stop and start on an upwards slope.

Apart from the dri!ing comfort, the other ad!antage of automatic cars is that the

maintenance cost of an automatic gear car could be lesser than a manual car o!er

the lifetime of the car. This is because the gears are changed automatically at the

correct engine 'D# and speeds and the dri!ing is always !ery smooth without any

erks. This contributes to longer life of the dri!e train parts of the car including

longer tyre life. Automatic cars do not re"uire clutch plate replacements.

  • 8/18/2019 report DS 3

    8/21

Bne disad!antage of automatic cars, people say is the ability of automatic cars to

get "uick acceleration when you want to o!ertake. This is not true. All you need to

do to get "uick acceleration in an automatic car is to :Eick =own: the accelerator of

the automatic car to the floor, and this will down shift the gear down, re! up the

engine and you will get the necessary acceleration re"uired to o!ertake.
