Activities organized by TSNUK SPIE Chapter Students

12th International Young Scientists Conference “Optics & High Technology Material Science SPO 2011”

Annually on the third week of October at the Faculty of Physics is held the International Young Scientists Conference “Optics and High Technology Materials Science – SPO” initiated by the Chair of Optics. So this year, 27 – 30 October 2011 already 12th conference SPO 2011 was held.

The high level of annual meetings of young scientists in indicated sphere was achieved thanks to young employees, graduates and students of the Chair of Optics who are members of international optical societies (OSA - Optical Society of America, SPIE - The International Society for Optics and Photonics, EOS - European Optical Society) and traditionally, many of them not the first time willingly take part in it. This work would not be possible without the support of teachers - veterans of pedagogical work, such as Prof. Igor A. Shaykevych who helps students for many years in this matter both organizationally as well as scholarly, transferring his invaluable creative experience the younger generation.

The conference program included the following sections: physics of condensed matter and nanotechnology; lasers and optoelectronics; optical design and high-

Page 3: Report of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv ...spie.org › StudentChapterReports › TarasShevchenko... · Report of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv SPIE

speed photography; biomedical optics; formation of three-dimensional images: technology and application.

Among the 37 oral and 59 poster presentations, of course, the most interesting were the lectures of our invited visitors because they are well-known among the international scientific community scientists and their achievements are interesting not only for young searchers, but also leading experts. Therefore visiting of conferences SPO by them is primarily an opportunity to hear the results of scientific research of young scientists who make actually often the breakthrough in science.

This year we have had participants from Russia, Belarus, Latvia, Finland, Germany, Japan, Italy, UK, Algeria, Iran, Iraq, the Czech Republic and distant Australia. In particular, the following interesting reports were presented at the conference: Prof. Mário F. S. Ferreira Nonlinear effects in optical fiber fibers: limitations and novel possibilities (Portugal), Dr. Kifah Qassim Salih Study the effect of substrate type on the characteristics of DBRs structure for GaN-based DBR mirror in blue emission region (Iraq), Aleksejs Udalcovs Investigation of error-free transmission for high density combined WMD systems (Latvia), Scott L Jones Self-assembling molecular hydrogels for future flexible display devices (Australia), Giorgio Pariani High optical quality photochromic films for smart optics (Italy), Assos. Prof. Toshitaka Yamakawa Cool the brain: a novel strategy to control the abnormal brain activity (Japan), Dr. Toru Aoki Nanovision science detection of x-ray photons and neutrons (Japan) and many other equally interesting presentations.

Our alumni also take an active part in the conference. Listed in the Book of Honor of Chair of Optics, its former student Mykhailo Semtsiv, who, working now at the Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany, manages there the work of our graduates - Oliana Fedosenko, Monastyrskyi Grygorii, Sergiy Kurlov (grants from the European educational program ERASMUS MUNDUS), expressed this year words of gratitude to the Kyiv university, in particular, to lecturers of Chair of Optics for the opportunity to “enjoy interesting work, to achieve some results, and defend by them honor and glory of the Ukrainian education and educators - our teachers” and expressed his pleasure of “new young faces of students, in whose eyes lit love to science, to physics”, "urging them “to learn so as to be first”.

Representatives of the world manufacturers of optical equipment and devices in Ukraine - companies “Melitek”, “Optec” and “Carl Zeiss LTD”, Ukrainian branch, already not the first year cooperate with the Faculty of Physics in the organization of sponsorship of SPO conferences. During the conferences it was decided to set up after some arrangements a joint Center of optical and spectroscopic studies

Page 4: Report of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv ...spie.org › StudentChapterReports › TarasShevchenko... · Report of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv SPIE

with the firm “Melitek” Russia, which general manager in Kyiv is Elena Vertsanova.

In general, should be noted the high interest of our foreign colleagues to modern scientific and educational base of the laboratory of spectroellipsometry of Chair of Optics of Faculty of Physics of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, because a member of the Organizing Committee of current conference student of Shizuoka University (Hamamatsu, Japan) Manato Kimura held training during September and October this year by studying functional surface layers of single crystal CdTe (111) by ellipsometric method together with MSc Dmytro Gnatyuk under the leadership of Head of Chair of Optics Prof. Dr. Leonid V. Poperenko.

All of this indicates not only the high level of professional preparation of our students and graduates, but also interest of foreign scientist in cooperation with them because our young experts are often able not just generate their own physical ideas but target independently their scientific search in topical areas of modern physics and nanotechnology.

The book of scientific works was published:

Was organized social day: Kyiv-tour and banquet. Also SPIE Student Chapter provided coffee-break during SPO conference.

Open Doors Day and Visiting Laboratory at Chairs of Optics

14 April 2011 year at the Faculty of Physics annual spring “Open Doors Day” was held. During four hours university entrants: were listening dean’s welcoming speech; were asking a question; were visiting educational-scientific laboratories (especially laser physics laboratory, AFM Lab., photonics and acoustic physics). There were a lot of physics experiments for kids and educators. Members of SPIE spread materials about optic science.

Lectures for students

Lectures for students of Kyiv National University and Secondary School graduate pupils of specialized (Phys&Math) Schools who will enter to Faculty of Physics (September 2011 – May 2012)

Training of foreign students at the Chair of Optics and their collaborative research with SPIE Student Chapter members

A bachelor student of the Faculty of Engineering of Shizuoka University (Japan) Manato Kimura visited and worked at Chair of Optics of the Faculty of Physics of TSNUK. Ukrainian supervisor was Dr. Prof. Leonid V. Poperenko, supervisor from the Japanese side was Dr. Toru Aoki. During two months of training Manato carried out research on optical and structural properties of the surface of CdTe crystals subjected to irradiation with nanosecond laser pulses and studied ellipsometric method with TSNUK SPIE Student Chapter President Dmytro Gnatyuk and others Chapter members. 2 conference abstracts on cooperative research were submitted, 1 article is preparing now. SPIE members organize for Japanese student visiting of historical, art and other sightseeing places, in particular ethnographic wedding festival in Pirogovo museum and Dynamo Kiev football match. We have plan to accept more students from Japan and other countries.
