IntroductionInNovember2016,theMigrationMuseumProject(MMP)securedfundingfromArtsCouncilEnglandtoco-ordinateapilottestingouttheideaforaMigrationMuseumsNetwork(MMN).ThenetworkaimstoincreaseandimproveoutputsassociatedwithmigrationandrelatedthemesinmuseumsandgalleriesacrosstheUK,andwillfocusonsharingbestpractice,highlightingcasestudiesandfacilitatingpartnershipsacrossthesector.Thisreportsharestheresultsfromanonlinesurvey,1completedwidelyby119people,2themajorityfromwithinmuseuminstitutions:museumdirectors,curatorsandcollectionsmanagers,andpeopleinabroadrangeofotherroles–educationandlearning,communityengagement,audiencedevelopment,interpretation,anddiversityandinclusion.Severalfreelancersresponded–museumconsultants,artists,andevaluationspecialists.Therewasalsointerestfromwithinacademiafromlecturers,researchersandpostgraduatestudents.Wehadagoodgeographicalspreadofrespondents:each‘pin’onthemaponthenextpagerepresentsarespondent–althoughthemanyresponsesfromacrossLondonarerepresentedbyone‘pin’only.Equally,webelieveweachievedafairlyrepresentativesampleofthesector,althoughweareawareoffurtherworkonmigrationthemesacrosstheUKthatisnotrepresentedhere(therebeingnoresponsestothiseffect),andthereisdoubtlessotherworkthatwedonotknowabout.3

Whatdidwelearnfromthesurvey?

Inthissection,wehavelistedeachquestioninitalicsunderthequestionnumberheading,andprovidedabriefanalysisoftheresponses,occasionallywithatable,followedbyaselectionoftheresponsesasquotes.Afulleraccountoftheresponsessummarisedinmosttablesisgivenintheappendices.Thefirstfivequestionsofthesurveyelicitedinformationfromtherespondentsrelatingtotheirplaceofwork,positionandexperience.Theanswerstothesearesummarisedintheintroductiontothisreportandnotgiveninfull.Question6Hasyourorganisationdonework*involvingmigrationand/orrelatedthemes(forexample,identity,belonging,xenophobia,localimmigration)withinthepastfiveyears,orareyoucurrentlydoingsuchwork?*Byworkwemeanexhibitions,workshops,events,workwithmigrantcommunitygroups,festivals,educationactivities,socialmediaandonlineactivities.Yes 78No 22

Therewasatotalof100responsestothisquestion,thevastmajorityofthem(78%)sayingthattheyeitherhaddone,orweredoing,workinthisarea.Askedtospecifywhatareasofworkorthemestheyhadworked,orwereworking,in,respondentsgaveawiderangeofanswersshowingawealthofworkrelatedtomigrationthemes.Tosumuptheanswers,weidentifiedthefollowingrecurrentthemesthataroseintheanswers–althoughnotallanswersprovideaclear‘fit’withtheidentifiedtheme.ThefulldetailsofwhichrespondentsidentifiedwhichareaofworkaregiveninAppendix1.

‘WearekeentoworkbeyondLondon–e.g.forthefilmingofChildMigrantsWelcome,weareinterviewingchildmigrantsandthosewhoknowtheminNorwich,DevonandScotlandandperhapselsewhere.Wearekeentoworkwithfaithgroupsbecauseoftheirdifferentrolesinsupportingandadvocatingforchildmigrants.’‘WewouldliketoreacheveryonebutthespecificprojectrunningwithESOLlearnersprobablyfocusesmoreonmigrantworkersandfamilies(mainlyPolish)asopposedtoothergroupswherefaithwasalsoathemeinolderprojects.’Question13Haveyouco-curatedmuseum/heritagecontentinrelationtomigrationthemes?Ifyes,pleasegivedetails.Ofthe62responsestothisquestion(52%ofoverallrespondents),39respondentsindicatedthattheyhadco-curatedcontent,while17saidthattheyhadnot.Ofthosewhohadnot,manyindicatedthatthiswassomethingplannedforthenearfuture,againshowingthatthisisapriorityarea.Manyrespondentsindicatedthattherewascrossoverwiththisquestionandquestions6and7atthestartofthesurveyaboutcurrentandupcomingworkonmigrationthemes,indicatingthatco-curationisintegraltocurrentandupcomingworkformany,andnotseenasdistinct.‘MostsignificantlyontheBelonging:VoicesofLondon’sRefugeesexhibitionin2006,inwhichweworkedwithover20refugeecommunitiestocreatetheexhibition’‘IdentitywithoutBorders[workingtitle]isco-curatedwithsixindividualswhohaverefugeestatusfromcountriesincludingNigeria,SyriaandUganda.Eachpersonhaschosenpersonalobjectsorobjectsfromthecollectiontoshowtheiridentitiesandsharetheirstories.Thesewillbesharedaspodcastsonourwebsiteaswellaswrittennarrativesintheexhibition.’‘OurInformationAgegallery(permanentgallery,opened2014)includedaco-curationprojectwithaCamerooniancommunityinLondontoshapeanareaofcontentrelatedtotheuseofmobilephonesinCameroon.Thecommunityshapedwhichobjectsshouldbeacquiredanddisplayedbythemuseum,andhelpedtocreatethegalleryinterpretation.’‘Ihaveco-curatedthewebsite,fourfilmsandrelatedeventswithafellowfilmmakerandformerchildmigrants,drawingontheirartisticskillse.g.theartofLintVu,themusicofMauriceNwokejiandHenryBran.Formerchildmigrantshavealsoparticipatedinpost-screeningdiscussions,runworkshopsinschoolsandgivenperformances.’‘WehaverecentlycuratedanexhibitiononCornishmigrationtoMexico,assistedbytheUniversityofHidalgo.’‘ThenewAfricasessionforSchoolwasco-developedwithBrightonBlackHistorygroupaspartofalearningplacementwiththem.ThesessionwasalsopilotedwithagroupofKS2childrenandtheirfamilieswhohadallmigratedtotheUK.’‘Yes,weworkedwithBlackSouthWestNetworktocreatetheSomalidisplay.Participantsweretrainedininterviewingskillswithalocalcommunityradiostation–BCFM–andtheytheninterviewedothermembersoftheSomalicommunityabouthowtheycametoBristol.Weworkedwithparticipantstodevelopamapandtimelinetobepartofthedisplay.’
