IntroductionInNovember2016,theMigrationMuseumProject(MMP)securedfundingfromArtsCouncilEnglandtoco-ordinateapilottestingouttheideaforaMigrationMuseumsNetwork(MMN).ThenetworkaimstoincreaseandimproveoutputsassociatedwithmigrationandrelatedthemesinmuseumsandgalleriesacrosstheUK,andwillfocusonsharingbestpractice,highlightingcasestudiesandfacilitatingpartnershipsacrossthesector.Thisreportsharestheresultsfromanonlinesurvey,1completedwidelyby119people,2themajorityfromwithinmuseuminstitutions:museumdirectors,curatorsandcollectionsmanagers,andpeopleinabroadrangeofotherroles–educationandlearning,communityengagement,audiencedevelopment,interpretation,anddiversityandinclusion.Severalfreelancersresponded–museumconsultants,artists,andevaluationspecialists.Therewasalsointerestfromwithinacademiafromlecturers,researchersandpostgraduatestudents.Wehadagoodgeographicalspreadofrespondents:each‘pin’onthemaponthenextpagerepresentsarespondent–althoughthemanyresponsesfromacrossLondonarerepresentedbyone‘pin’only.Equally,webelieveweachievedafairlyrepresentativesampleofthesector,althoughweareawareoffurtherworkonmigrationthemesacrosstheUKthatisnotrepresentedhere(therebeingnoresponsestothiseffect),andthereisdoubtlessotherworkthatwedonotknowabout.3

Therewasatotalof100responsestothisquestion,thevastmajorityofthem(78%)sayingthattheyeitherhaddone,orweredoing,workinthisarea.Askedtospecifywhatareasofworkorthemestheyhadworked,orwereworking,in,respondentsgaveawiderangeofanswersshowingawealthofworkrelatedtomigrationthemes.Tosumuptheanswers,weidentifiedthefollowingrecurrentthemesthataroseintheanswers–althoughnotallanswersprovideaclear‘fit’withtheidentifiedtheme.ThefulldetailsofwhichrespondentsidentifiedwhichareaofworkaregiveninAppendix1.
