Welcome to our 2018 Report to the Community. As we write, CET and ThinkTV are entering the 10th year of their innovative regional partnership and the formation of Public Media Connect, Inc., dedicated to serving the greater Cincinnati and Dayton communities.

Public Media Connect’s mission is to strengthen the communities we serve through programs that inspire and inform, educate and engage, fostering citizenship and culture, the joy of learning and the power of diverse perspectives.

This year your public media stations offered access to award-winning national and local programming and to educational services reaching the more than 3.5 million people of our region. During the past year, CET and ThinkTV were watched in almost 90% of all television households and our educational resources reached learners of all ages – and the schools and teachers that serve them.

We are, after all, your local public and educational television stations. In addition to an extensive multichannel programming service featuring the arts and culture, science and nature, documentaries and public affairs, we continue our commitment to creating local programming that captures the stories and life of the Cincinnati and Dayton communities. This year, our ongoing series, Our Ohio, The Art Show, and SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar were complemented by the production of a number of special broadcasts, a variety of educational resources and other on-air and non-broadcast initiatives. Our productions and staff were nominated for 15 Regional Emmy Awards and brought 8 home to our stations.

In education, we have worked with partners to continue our commitment to the national American Graduate initiative and launched an innovative STEM online collection of learning and career resources. We reached more pre-schoolers and their teachers than ever before with broadcast, online and on-site programs. As SOITA (Southwestern Ohio Instructional Technology Association) became a part of Public Media Connect, it continues to provide unique professional development opportunities for public and parochial schools across 21 counties.

Recent national studies confirm that public television and stations like CET and ThinkTV, are the most trusted media in the nation: the fairest network for news and public affairs, the safest on-air and online destination for our children, and the most valued source of educational resources for schools and teachers.

Above all, we are accountable to you. None of our services to the community would be possible without the generous network of individuals, foundations, businesses, and organizations that have partnered with us to fund, produce and deliver these regional initiatives, programs, and educational resources.

This 2018 Report to the Community can only highlight some of the story of the past year. You, in fact, have made CET and ThinkTV the most widely used non-profit service in your homes and throughout our region. Thank you.

For more than 60 years and from its beginnings as educational television, public media has demonstrated a proven ability to educate children. They remain one of our most important audiences in homes, childcare environments, and schools. The resources and services created, produced and distributed today across digital platforms and on-site help parents and teachers to ignite a love of learning and prepare children for success from cradle to career.

PMC’s programming, workshops and instructional resources are designed for caregivers, parents and educators and span from kindergarten preparedness to job skills for tomorrow to educational technology and much more.

American Graduate: Getting to Work

In 2011 the Corporation for Public Broadcasting launched an ambitious American Graduate initiative to help confront a persistent high school dropout crisis in communities around the country. CET and ThinkTV were among the first stations selected to participate.

In 2018, CPB committed to an important third phase of American Grad: American Graduate: Getting to Work. PMC’s stations once again were selected – among only 19 nationwide – to focus on our region’s need to prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow with the skills and training needed in high-demand fields. CPB’s seed funding for this community and educational awareness effort also included the opportunity for PMC to work together with WVIZ/ideastream (Cleveland) and WOSU (Columbus) in a collaboration to extend the impact of this initiative statewide as well as locally.

Among our statewide efforts, PMC co-produced Talking Jobs with Ohio’s Next Governor – American Graduate: Getting to Work, Gubernatorial candidates Richard Cordray and Mike DeWine addressed education and jobs in forums with students and young workers from across Ohio. The forums were “livestreamed” on Facebook, You Tube and on CETconnect.org and watched in classrooms throughout the state. The production was later posted online. A special one-hour broadcast on CET, ThinkTV16 and public television stations around Ohio followed the live event.

PBS Edcamp

ThinkTV was chosen as one of 12 stations to pilot a new on-site educational experience for teachers: PBS Edcamp. Edcamp is a participant-driven professional development event for K-3 educators, administrators and pre-service teachers. Two Edcamp events were held in 2018 with another one slated for early 2019.

PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs

In Cinicnnati, CET partnered with the PBS NewsHour to pilot a journalism educational project called the Student Reporting Labs. Two Hughes STEM High School students were chosen to participate in the summer program, and one of the students, Mary Williams, received the Gwen Ifill Legacy Fellowship with her reporting broadcast nationally. The second student, Sean Davis, was recognized as a Reporting Lab Fellow.

A number of educational and school outreach activities continued in 2018, among them: Reading for Smiles, Super Why Reading Camps, Educational Technology Workshops, The PBS Kids Young Writers Contest, Early Learning Workshops and Super Saturdays.

There are so many questions that public television asks of a program before it’s broadcast. What will our audience know, learn, experience? Is it relevant, fair? Is it a story well told whether it’s a drama or documentary, a special or a series. Above all, does the program accomplish its purpose? If our audiences of viewers and learners are to trust us, then they must trust the content we present.

And that is true whether the program is our own local production or a signature national PBS offering.

This past year PBS continued to provide an array of award-winning programs. Compelling content continues to invite viewers to explore new ideas, offers a front row seat to the worlds of music, theater, dance and art, and challenges us with documentaries and public affairs programming that chooses to inform rather than inflame issues. (And there are always the discoveries on Antiques Roadshow!) Children continued to depend on public television to provide the best and safest programming that nurtures and teaches.

While much of PMC’s production efforts are focused on education and not designed for broadcast, CET and ThinkTV’s local productions garnered 15 regional Emmy Award nominations with programs and staff winning 8 this past August. They included recognition for ongoing series The Art Show, Showcase with Barbara Kellar, and Our Ohio. Last year’s Cincinnati’s Music Hall: The Next Movement and the educational series I Can Be Anything I Want To Be A to Z. This Fall production continued on PMC’s ongoing series complemented by specials: 20 Seconds of Courage: Fighting the Opioid Addiction in Rural Ohio and Talking Jobs with Ohio’s Next Governor.

CET and ThinkTV’s 20 Seconds of Courage: Fighting the Opioid Addiction in Rural Ohio, Talking Jobs with Ohio’s Next Governor, Victoria, SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar, Earth’s Natural Wonders, The Art Show, The Great American Read, G is for Gun: Arming the Teachers in America, Autumnwatch New England and more inspired, informed and engaged audiences.

PMC connected with viewers and members in many ways – on-air, online, in the classroom and through community events. CET and ThinkTV engaged with educators, viewers and supporters through Public Media Connect’s bi-monthly member magazine, weekly e-newsletters, educator training workshops, special events, screenings and studio tours. Throughout the year we met with community and educational project partners and joined with others to participate in community events. PMC’s Board of Trustees and Community Advisory Councils met regularly to discuss CET and ThinkTV’s service to our communities.

PMC’s dedicated corps of community volunteers assisted CET and ThinkTV throughout the year making our annual auctions, membership campaigns and events possible.

Public Media Connect events included:

Independent Lens: Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities screening and panel discussion at Wilberforce University and Central State University.

The Great American Read, the eight-part PBS series and engagement project asked Americans to watch and vote for their favorite novel. Limited government support provides “seed funding” for our stations, however, it is voluntary community support that remains the most important contributor to our financial health and capability. Community support contributed to more than 70% of PMC’s annual funding.
