“ As a member of the community I understand the importance of mental health wellness – the need for a “safe” well respected place for our children. Education and support for myself as a parent is crucial. A place where my humanity is seen, respected, and honored. Often times people living in poverty are often viewed as invisible. We try to see the humanity in each individual.”

– Joyce Trotman Jordan, Board Member

Letter from Executive DirectorDear Friends,This has been an exciting year full of expansion and integration for Millhill. The need for behavioral health services in our community has grown dramatically, so much so that we have added therapy spaces in our main location.  The need is evident in our other core services as well which is why we integrated behavioral health as a key component in all our programs from early education and youth engagement to family support.

While youth engagement has always been one of Millhill’s strengths, more recently we have expanded our engagement efforts. In order to serve more youth and provide more diverse opportunities, we have added for-profit jobs to our Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program so that we can provide valuable summer jobs to our returning college students. We are also in the planning stages of expanding the summer employment program into a full year program because we know that successful youth engagement means engaging for the long term. We use this approach with our Trenton PEERS, peer educators and role models that graduate from high school and pursue post-secondary pathways including college and our Next Generation Community Leaders who learn about civic engagement so that they can develop into our community’s future leaders.

At Millhill, we work to strengthen children, youth, families -- and the community. All of this is made possible through your generous donation. The work we do is more important than ever and we ask for your continued support.

Thank you for helping to provide opportunity to those that need it most. Visit us at www.millhillcenter.org and let us know how we’re doing.

With gratitude,

Cynthia H. OberkoflerExecutive Director

“ I love being a member of NGCL because I am vehemently active in change and it enables this side of me I never thought existed. I get to work with great fellow peers and grow out of my shell for the betterment of my community.”– Shai’day,

Next Generation Community Leader

Behavioral Health Growth and IntegrationMillhill is dedicated to our mission of providing educational and behavioral health services. This past year, we continued to experience steady growth for counseling services in the community.

We have outgrown our Prospect Street location, which opened in 2015. As a response to the continued increase in need, we are adding additional counseling rooms at our main location on Oakland Street. Behavioral health services are integrated into our core areas of early education, family support and youth engagement. Licensed counsel-ors provide therapeutic intervention to preschool children, as well as group support through our youth engagement programs, parenting classes, and family counseling sessions.

In 2018, we provided more than 16,000 sessions for ages 4–adult including psychiatric evaluations, therapy, case management and medication monitoring. This past year, 91% of youth in Millhill’s outpatient counseling showed improvement in school functioning, and 93% of youth improved their attendance.

Youth Engagement in ActionOur Youth Engagement Services provide positive youth experiences to Trenton teens that prepare them to serve as leaders in the community and to pursue post-secondary pathways. Millhill’s youth leaders from the second year of a three year Next Generation Community Leaders grant from The New Jersey Health Initiatives, a program of the Robert Wood Foundation, are becoming role models in their community.

In partnership with the City of Trenton, the youth leaders supported the City’s “Taking it to the Streets,” a summer-long program which brings activities directly to neighborhoods with few recreational outlets in Trenton. In addition to leadership development, Millhill’s youth are involved in violence prevention by aligning with The Capitol City Youth Violence Coalition’s Safety Plan.

Teens gain hands on experience working with the mayor, police, schools and community organizations to help improve youth safety and civic engagement.
