President’s Message - A Challenging Environment

It is difficult to reflect on the accomplishments of 2019 without recognizing the

current challenges our community and our world face during the COVID-19

pandemic.

To provide help in the community, the Longmont Community Foundation

granted $185,000 through our Neighbor to Neighbor Fund in support to nonprofit

organizations who are helping those affected or impacted by COVID-19. Through

the Strongmont Fund, the Foundation and Advance Longmont partners have

provided $223,000 to aid small businesses as they navigate reopening and our

current business climate. Strongmont 2 is our second wave of small business

funding and the board unanimously approved this second cycle to be aimed at

providing support to businesses owned by people of color. Thanks to the efforts of

the Strongmont 2 Committee and generosity of donors, we were able to provide

$100,000 of support.

This is in part due to the Foundation’s effort to re-examine how diversity, equity

and inclusiveness should be paramount to everything we do at the Foundation.

We represent the entire community and our actions should demonstrate how we

live our values. One of our first actions was to adopt a new diversity, equity, and

inclusiveness statement (DEI). We, as well as other institutions, organizations are

on a journey to making our practices more inclusive. To this end, everything we

do is under the scrutiny of the DEI ‘lens’. We can’t promise that we’re perfect, but

we can promise that we are moving intentionally in this work.

I wish to thank and recognize the support of our donors who provide most of

the grants from the Foundation through their donor advised and other specialty

funds. Due to their involvement, we accomplished the following in 2019:

• $3 million in grants to support nonprofits that focus on animals, arts, civic,

education, environment, health, and human service issues. We have now

granted out in excess of $14 million since our founding in 1994.

• $72,000 in scholarships, furthering education opportunities for those students

attending a 4 year, community college, or trade or vocational school

• Welcomed the Longmont United Hospital Foundation as a partner for their

mission activities and philanthropic directives

• Welcomed our 220th fund in 2019 and now manage $18M in assets. These

include: Family Funds, Agency Funds, Agency Endowments, Giving Circles,

Business Funds, and Specialty Program Funds.

The Longmont Community Foundation relies on an extraordinary group of

volunteers that serve on the Board of Trustees, as well as our Grants, Scholarship,

Investment, and Live & Give Longmont committees – just to name a few. The

Board of Trustees and I are very grateful for our volunteers’ contributions and to

our extraordinarily dedicated and talented staff.

Stay safe and Be well.

Dale Bernard,

President, Board of Trustees

We represent the entire community and our actions should demonstrate how we live our values.

attending Colorado State University where she will be in the CSU Honors Program and the Honors Undergraduate Research Scholars Program. She will major in biology. She is very appreciate for the financial support from the donors as after her undergraduate education she plans to attend graduate school to specialize and do research in conservation biology.

Riley is preparing for an occupation in Gunsmithing. He will attend Trinidad State Junior College in the fall. He loves being in the shop working with machines, tools and fixing things. Riley says when he learned he was selected as a recipient, he was ecstatic. He is very appreciative for the opportunity this scholarship is giving him to pursue his interests.

As a first generation college student, Nicole is grateful to the donor for the opportunity this scholarship presents to her. She will be attending Front Range Community College for two years and then will transfer to a University in Colorado to complete her bachelor’s degree in psychology. She hopes that someday she will be able to help students like the donor has helped her.

Congratulations to this year’s YOUR Story Award Winner Integral Steps

Thanks to our 2020 Live and Give Grants Committee

“Caleb has taken Integral Steps classes since 2015 when he was 2 years old. Due to several traumatic events, including a serious car accident and a hailstorm that disrupted home stability, he was so anxious he would not even speak in class. Our classes, which integrate music, movement, Spanish, and art in a holistic way, helped him develop physical, mental, and social/emotional balance. He now volunteers new ideas, joyfully creates with classmates, and presents his artwork at local libraries.”

Founded in 2012, Integral Steps is a non-profit organization based in Colorado, USA, focusing on integrative education for individuals, families and communities. Integrating different learning modalities, our programs provide unique experiences that allow participants to feel positively challenged and encouraged to grow. Our approach is based on extensive research on early childhood development, brain development and skill acquisition.

Sharing the NextLight expandsFree connection now offered for Grandparents and caregivers of Longmont St. Vrain students

Since 2019, Sharing the

NextLight has offered a free

home internet connection

and router to Longmont

families whose children attend

St. Vrain Valley schools and

qualify for free or reduced

lunch. In August of 2020, the

community-owned fiber-optic

internet service, Longmont

Community Foundation and

Longmont Children, Youth

& Families announced that

grandparents and designated

caregivers of those students

would also be eligible. “Due to

COVID-19, remote education

has become more important

than ever,” NextLight Executive

Director Valerie Dodd said. “But

for many families with working

parents, keeping their child at

home simply isn’t an option.

We’re meeting these families

where they are to ensure that

no one gets stranded on the

wrong side of the ‘digital divide’

and that learning can continue even when in-person

classes do not.”

The program is a partnership of NextLight, the

Longmont Community Foundation, and Longmont

Children, Youth & Families (CYF). Interested

families can receive an application by calling

Children, Youth & Families at 303-651-8580 or

by going online to www.longmontcolorado.gov/

SharingTheNextLight. Applicants must live in an

area where NextLight is currently available.

NextLight customers who want to assist the

program can have a donation added to their

monthly bill by calling NextLight customer

service at 303-774-4494.

Donors who are not NextLight customers or

who wish to make a one-time gift may give

through the Longmont Community

Foundation. Since its inception, the Sharing

the Nextlght program has raised nearly

$50,000 to provide services to children and

their families in Longmont.
