If the reporting verb is in the present the sentence is in the same tense.
A: I hate pizza!B: A tells me that he hates pizza
A: I don’t like comediesB: A says that she doesn’t like comedies
A: My father can swim very fastB: A says that his father can swim very fast. tells me
If the reporting verb is in the past the sentence is in the past tense. (when you have two verbs only change the first one
