Financial Reporting: Past

This is Max.

Manual processes susceptible to human error

Everyone has their own ‘spreadsheet’

More time spent gathering information

than analyzing

Information pulled from many different

sources

What are my outstanding

commitments? How much money do I have left?

Am I on track to meet my

budget?

Where did you find this

information?

What is the status of my

request?

Why does it take so long to build a report?

Page 8: Reporting Transformation - Amazon S3

Cause and Effect

Process Issue

Max needs to log into each source system to manually extract the data that he needs for the report.

Wasted Effort

In total, Max spends 6 hours extracting, compiling and aggregating the information to build the report.

Wasted Time

Max does not realize that he forgot to include a specific fund as he was aggregating the data.

Incorrect Results

The director now uses the report Max provided him to evaluate an investment decision.

Misinformed Decision-Making

Max is asked to create a free balance report for a Director…

How can we rectify these reporting issues?

Page 9: Reporting Transformation - Amazon S3

Approach

Our Agency Comptroller enacted a vision to:

Have one repository containing data from each source system

Implement a new reporting system for all users

Form a Reporting & Analytics team responsible for creating standardized reports for the Agency

As a result, the theme of was established.

Key Takeaways

It is feasible to implement a common financial reporting platform across an entire government department/agency within a relatively short period of time.

Establishing proper governance structures that clearly define each stakeholder’s roles and responsibilities, will in turn create a sustainable foundation for any transformation.

Developing a single, common data repository to aggregate source system data is a key step towards the development of standardized financial reporting.
