REPRESENTATION IN INDIE MUSIC MAGAZINES

Page 2: Representation

FONTS

The use of a sans serif font connotes simplicity and has informal elements working alongside the bright, masculine colour scheme to make the cover overall look appealing and stand out. The use of different colour fonts on different colour backgrounds makes the font stand out on the page and therefore becomes more visible to the audience.

The font style used in NME is also a plain sans serif font which has informal and simplistic connotations. The use of colour makes the whole text stand out against its background. Also, the use of a sans serif font style is quite a masculine feature appealing to NME’s primary male audience.

IMAGES

The use of a low angle mid-shot along with the artists having cross arms adds to a stern and masculine overall representation. The way they are dressed fits the stereotypical conventions of a male indie artist. Overall, the images in my magazine represent and appeal to the male gender, the middle class and young people. These are the key characteristics of my primary audience and the use of mise en scene in my images helps appeal to them.

NME also use a mid shot. The mise-en-scene of Jake Bugg displayed in the image represents the stereotypical conventions of the indie genre. The age, social class and gender of Jake Bugg is similar to that of the demographic of the indie genre resulting in an appealing image.

The use of a serif font style, shows professionalism and adds an element of class and sophistication to the magazine. The italic font represents the speech and the use of a pull quote is appealing and will draw the audience towards the feature. The content of the pull quote represents reform and this is also quite indie appealing.
