My Media Presentation on Representations

A short presentation on the ways in which my magazine

represent social groups

Gender• My magazine, I would like to think, represents both genders equally. In my magazine I

have no offensive, demeaning language to either gender. I would say that my magazine shows males to be rather skilled at multiple things, due to the fact that the editor is male; my main article is about a male and the only thing mentioned about females, are Celine (Alex’s girlfriend) and Danielle (our field reporter). They do receive high praise however, which shows that I don’t try and prove one gender better than the other. We have no females in our magazine which means I couldn’t add any sort of sexual/suggestive photos in my articles. If I had tried to do this with men, then our magazine would lose our male audience, and vice versa with females, so it was better to have neither. This way, we can keep a larger fan base and hopefully sell more magazines. This is against the modern stereotype, because most magazines try to focus on only one gender, and can then play off the desires of that gender in order to sell more copies.

Class• Class representations are present in my magazine. They show Alex, the farm

boy rocker, coming from a very much working class background, given that's what you do on a farm, work. He reaches stardom, from one of the most anti-show business lifestyles which shows that anyone from any background can attain fame and/or their dreams. This is shown through pictures and my article.

• Standard brick wall shows his background in life, and • the guitar shows his talent and career

• My magazine is aimed at the regular people of today. Not upper class, but just regular guys and girls, that go out, work, earn their keep and have a passion for music. People who actually put effort into things, and can be proud of what they’ve produced, be it musical or something work-related. This also applies to students, not just our young adult audience of 16-22 year olds.

Language• The language used in my magazine is similar to that used by

close friends. A friendly chatting style, where there is light-heartedness throughout and general warm atmosphere. “Hey guys! Just me saying that we’ve got a cracking issue for you!” this represents the teen audience who prefer this style of informality due to the colloquial language used to reach them, as a person

• The Language is informal and relaxed, but I don’t use any sort of dialect in my magazine. This will hopefully appeal to the younger people of our target market, because they’ll see that the magazine isn’t “stuck up” and uptight, so they’ll hopefully feel like they can relate to our magazine and buy it!

Age• My magazine represents teenagers being hardworking, persevering and

genuinely good people. I believe my magazine does this because I have no negative pictures or comments about them,

• With my article about Alex the wonder boy, it gives off a positive reference for them, and that it could apply to anyone of today’s modern teenagers, because Alex had a regular background, just like every other person.

• Background is a brick wall, to show his common background

• This is against the modern stereotype, because teenagers are typically seen as hoodlums, trouble makers and general wrong do-ers.

Musical• The musical representations of my magazine are that there

is nothing wrong with rock and roll music, because one reason for people hating that music is the people behind the music. My magazine shows that Alex is a really friendly guy, he’s kind and that he’s not weird or creepy and my article supports this. The magazine also features technical sides to music as well , which helps show that there is more to music, that there are people behind the scenes who play an important role. This appeals to musical fans especially who know their terminology,
