REPRESENTATIVES OF HCDA TOUR HART'SRAIL OPERATIONS CENTER
HART's Rail Operations Center (ROC) in Waipahu was busier than usual this week, asrepresentatives from the Hawai'i Community Development Authority (HCDA) got a first-hand look at the heart of the HART Project. The HCDA group enjoyed a walk though one of
the Project's spacious rail cars, whileengineers prepped the vehicles for theirinitial set of energized tests during which, forthe first time ever, HART's rail cars will beoperating under their own power.

The HCDA is a state entity whose aim is toestablish community developmentprograms, in cooperation with private
enterprises, to help create economic and social opportunities for those communities. TheHCDA's interest in the Honolulu Rail Project stems from the fact that rail will serve as thecenterpiece of Oahu's future transportation infrastructure. In that capacity, the Rail Projectwill play an important role in the success of several HCDA programs.
After a brief overview and a tour of the OperationsCenter, the HCDA group took a train walk through.Each train consists of four cars with a length of 260feet or nearly the length of a football field! Thatlength was integral in the design of the trains in that itallows for increased rider comfort with each trainseating 188 passengers with a maximum capacity of800.
Inaddition, HART's trains are the first in thecountry to feature "open gangways" betweenrail cars, as opposed to having closed orsliding doors separating each car in the train.This design advantage further increases ridercomfort and mobility. It also adds to theopen-air feel riders will enjoy along with thesensational views provided by trains on anelevated guideway free of any and all traffic
issues on the streets below!

HART's rail cars will provide riders with many perks not found on other transportationsystems across the country. One of those perks will be specially modified luggage racksmeant to accommodate surfboards up to 13-feet in length. That'll make HART's trainsamong the first in the country to be "surfer-friendly"!
IT'S MORE THAN SAFETY FIRST, IT'S SAFETY ALWAYS!
HART's new Executive Director and C.E.O. Andrew Robbins has long been a proponent ofsafety in the various transportation systems he's been associated with not only for railemployees and passengers, but also for anyone who might interact in or around railfacilities.
To drive home the point, HART will be posting importantsafety reminders through its electronic newsletter. The tipswill focus mostly on rail safety, but also cover other safetytopics as well.

like to remind everyonethat trains will run on tracks consisting of three rails.One of the rails will carry a strong electrical current thusposing a safety hazard. HART is asking the public toTREAT ALL RAILS AS ENERGIZED! Everyone isadvised to avoid contact with all rail tracks at alltimes!
HART's project design is such thatthe chances people will interact withrail lines are minimal (20.4 miles ofthe 21 mile project are elevated andthe remaining 0.6 miles are located ina restricted area) however again,please AVOID CONTACT WITH ALLRAIL TRACKS AT ALL TIMES!
