SKETCHBOOK INSTRUCTIONS
BRING TO CLASS EVERY DAY!!!! Artist develop perception and artistic skills by constantly sketching the world around them. Begin keeping a sketchbook of your own. Choose a notebook with unlined paper. Make sure it is easy to carry around (between 4x6 and 8.5x11). Remember it is always easier to draw bigger if you’re just starting out. Practice makes perfect or at least improves. The more you draw the better you will “see” objects. Make written notes about your sketches, such as the quality of light, the colors you notice, or the mood of a scene. Explore different media and tools. Sketchbooks can be personal, visual journals that provide insights into your growth as an artist. You will have graded sketchbook assignments (drawings & notes) throughout the class and material checks. Sketchbooks range in quality, as well as price. Books may be found at various stores. Wal-mart (craft section), Blick Art Supplies, Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, CVS, Jeffery Allen, Barns & Noble, Walden Books, Dollar General, amazon, etc…
Here are a few tips and examples of good quality sketchbooks. Regardless of price, try to stick to wire bound or hard cover. If the book is only bound by tape or glue, it tends to fall apart. Also, note the pound of paper and the paper type. 80lb is better then 50lb. Drawing paper is
better than watercolor, canvas, or tracing paper.
