Research AnalysisAfra Malik 12C- The questionnaire was given to twenty 11- 12 year old

girls. They were asked 10 questions about pop.

Who’s your favourite pop artist?• The first question was ‘who’s your favourite pop artist.’ participants were giver 5 options of either , Beyoncé, Ariana Grande, One Direction, Justin Bieber and

other.

• Research found that the most popular artist was in fact Ariana Grande with 7 votes in her favour. This tells me that the target audience admire the youth and talent of this singer, and her amazing ability to reach high notes which are hard to mimic. At the age of 19, she had already had her own show and her first album.

• Following Ariana Grande, came Beyoncé, the participants had seem to be inspired by the power of her voice and her determination to become an international icon of independence (following the split of her girl band). They had also been encouraged to be as positive as Beyoncé, her skill to make everybody smile was an inspiration.

• The least favourite artist was Justin Bieber with only vote. This suggests that he does not appeal to the target audience as much. This could be because of gender, Justin Bieber is male and therefore is not the best inspiration to young girls.

• After my research, I found that I should style my magazine with a female artist who is quite young and pretty. The articles should be inspiring stories about the artists life and there undeniable talent.

What is the best prize?• Participants were asked about what prize would attract them to buy the magazine. They were

given a choice between a free lip gloss, nail polish and key chain. Results found that the most popular prize was lip gloss. This suggests that the target audience are young as they had just started wearing makeup products such as lip gloss. Adding this to the magazine as a free gift will make the audience feel as if they are connected to the monthly report.

On a scale from 1-10 (10 being the most), how important is music to you? Almost all people gave an answer between 8- 10 which suggests that this magazine should offer more than just monthly gossip, but it should be a way to escape reality and enter a world of tasteful music that generates a relaxing mood that suits the consumer. This result tells me that a lot of people do enjoy music so it will be my opportunity to provide people with the joy of music. Because of this, I shall ensure that my magazine offers not only good music, but inspiring stories for the young audience to have a positive influence on them.

What would be the best competition prize?

The target audience were next asked what kind of competition prize would be the best to be win. The options were, designer perfume, free concert tickets, meet and greet tickets and a signed poster. The majority picked both meet and greet and concert tickets which shows hat the audience want to meet there idol and enjoy their music.

By having the chance to win a life changing prize, they will be lured into the magazine and be tempted to buy it. The least voted for was designer perfume. This may have been due to the young demographic and their lack of interest in expensive things and more on their goal of meeting their idol pop star. It may also be the fact that perfume can be bought in any store which sells it where as tickets are a lot more rare and harder to find, especially at a cheap price.

Signed posters were also proven popular as it is a more personal gift which any of the audience could treasure forever.

If you saw the magazine in stores, what would convince you to buy it?

MAIN IMAGE FREE PRIZE ARTICLES COMPETITIONS

This question was asked and the most popular answer was the main image. This may have been because this is where attention is drawn. The main image must be bold and eye catching so that people are captivated. The main image can tell a lot about the whole magazine as it relates to the main story inside. The least voted for was the free prize, which suggests that customers enjoy the magazine for its content and not so much for free gifts.

• The participants were then asked what would be the best colours to display on the front cover and were given an option of 4 and any other suggestions. The highest vote went to the colour combination of pink and blue. When asked why, they expressed that the magazine, though aimed at girls, should be suitable for males who enjoy that music too. They should feel comfortable and not feel ashamed to buy a pop magazine.

What is the best colour combination?

When presented with this question participants were given a choice of 3 articles, gossip, interviews and dating rumours. The most voted for was gossip, this can suggest that readers want to feel close to their favourite artist and feel connected in a sort of way. They want to know what is going on their lives and a way to do this is to conveniently pick up a pop magazine and read all about it. also, this gossip will help them gain popularity amongst their friends. The least voted for was interviews, and this may have been because the reader may not want to read a lot due to their young age and low attention span, however it was close to being the second vote which could also indicate that readers who are slightly older want to personally know the artist in a way which is quite intimate and a way to do this is directly from the artists themselves instead of just journalists or paparazzi.

What is the best main article?

Do you play a musical instrument? • Participants were now asked whether they played a musical instrument or not. There was choice

between piano, drums and guitar. This particular question was on the survey because a page of the magazine may have been devoted to the most popular instrument, for example, piano was the most popular so a page may have talked about which celebrities played the same instrument when they were young. By doing this it can inspire the target audience to be confident in their hobbies and even to take up playing an instrument.
