November – December 2017 RESEARCH BULLETIN Hend Alqaderi, DDS, DMSc, lecturer on Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology, received an award from the Karam Foundation for, “Oral Health for Syrian Refugees.” e goals of the project are: To describe the oral health delivery system for Syrian refugees during the fleeing period and before appealing for asylum. To evaluate the oral health status for a given sample of Syrian refugees in Lowell, MA. To recommend efficient, cost effective oral health strategies as per the information collected and the needs of the population for the future. Alqaderi is working with Anubhuti Shukla, DMD student and Janice Cho, instructor in Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology, on this study. Roland Baron, DDS, PhD, professor and chair of Oral Medicine, Infection and Immunity, received an award from Radius Health, Inc. for “Comparison of the Osteocytic Responses to Abaloparitide versus Teriparatide: First Phase.” In this study, Baron will determine whether the differential effects of osteoporosis medications, Abaloparatide and Teriparatide, on bone resorption originate from different responses of the osteocytes to these two ligands. Shu-Chi Allison Yeh, PhD, research fellow in the Intini Lab, Oral Medicine, Infection and Immunity, received a 2017 Outstanding Postdoctoral Fellow Award from the HMS/HSDM Office for Postdoctoral Fellows. Yeh was one of eight recipients from HSDM and HMS celebrated for their achievements. Her research uses intravital imaging to study post-natal calvarial skeletal stem cells. Floyd Dewhirst, DDS, PhD, senior member of the staff at the Forsyth Institute and professor of Oral Medicine, Infection and Immunity at HSDM, was nominated as a Fellow in the Dentistry and Oral Health Sciences from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dewhirst, who has become a leading force behind characterizing the oral microbiome, and helped identify the diverse, genetic capability and pathogenic potential of organisms present in the human oral cavity. His efforts have identified approximately 700 species of phylotypes of human oral bacteria that are described in the Human Oral Microbiome Database which is hosted at the Forsyth Institute. RESEARCH AWARDS & RECOGNITIONS Zachary Peacock, DMD, MD, assistant professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and co-director of the Cleſt and Craniofacial Center at Shriners Hospitals for Children and Massachusetts General Hospital, along with Yisi (Daisy) Ji, DMD 2018 candidate, received the Best Paper in Oral Surgery Award for their publication, “Cost and lack of insurance coverage are prohibitive to having dental implants aſter resections for benign mandibular neoplasms” from Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Oral Radiology. is was a retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent resection for benign mandibular neoplasms between 2005 and 2014. Demographic variables included age, sex, and race. Outcome variables include rates of implant placement, implant restoration, and reasons for not having implants. Fisher’s exact test and odds ratios were calculated. Peacock and Ji concluded that patients do not typically go on to dental reconstruction aſter mandibular resection, with cost as a major barrier. Since matriculating into the DMD program at HSDM, Yisi (Daisy) Ji has produced ten publications in peer-reviewed journals.
