VP RESEARCH & ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

It’s business as usual for the month of February at PHCRI. As we approach March deadlines for grant applications, we are expecting a busy month ahead. I would like to remind you that PHCRI’s annual Research Day, part of UBC’s Celebrate Research Week, is to take place on March 5th in the New Lecture Theatre. This year’s guest speaker will be Dr. Carole Estabrooks from the University of Alberta, School of Nursing. This year’s theme discusses the topic of knowledge translation. Details on this event

are listed on the back page of this newsletter. In November of last year, the Board of Directors of the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI) adopted a new strategic road map outlining the evolving needs of Canada’s research enterprise and CFI’s direction in addressing such changes. The road map examines CFI’s mandate and proposes a number of strategic directions to support world-class research, talent and innovation. CFI held a webinar in mid-January to cover the main points of this road map, and to address any questions. CFI is currently seeking feedback on these strategies. To view the webinar, and to download a copy of the strategic road map, please visit the CFI website at http://www.innovation.ca/. - Yvonne Lefebvre

MESSAGE FROM YVONNE LEFEBVRE VP RESEARCH & ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

March is off to a busy start as we begin with a full week of research related events. UBC Celebrate Research Week is to commence on March 2. To recognize some of the accomplishments in research and realize the opportunities ahead, PHCRI is hosting its 8th annual Research Day on Monday, March 5. The focus of this year’s event is knowledge translation, with a keynote presentation to be delivered by Dr. Carole Estabrooks. The 2012 Research and Mission Award will also be presented to one of PHC’s researchers in recognition of his/her outstanding research

while demonstrating the mission and values of Providence.

Also as part of Celebrate Research Week, VCHRI, CFRI, UBC Faculty of Medicine and PHCRI are hosting a free public talk on regenerative medicine, to take place on March 7. Please see more about this event on the back page of this newsletter.

In February, The Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research announced the launch of the 2012 Scholar Award, part of the Career Investigator Program. These awards help cultivate the development of health researchers by providing them with the support they need to further their research and to help build research programs. A number of PHCRI investigators received funding from this competition last year. It is anticipated that there will be a similar level of success this year.

UBC has announced the recipient of the 2011 Faculty Research Award. I would like to congratulate Dr. Julio Montaner for this achievement. Dr. Montaner, best known for his contributions to the development of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), has been awarded the Jacob Biely Research Prize for his outstanding record of research.

MESSAGE FROM PETER PARÉ INTERIM VP RESEARCH & ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

It is with some trepidation that I take on this interim role, which I hope will be short! Dr. Lefebvre will be a tough act to follow in an interim role and for the new permanent VP Research. She was the first full-time VP Research that we have had at Providence Health Care, and it is a revelation to me to see what a profound impact having a full-time VP Research can have. Before Yvonne, we had researchers, first John Ruedy, then Jim Hogg, and finally Mike O’Shaunessey who served as Director of Research or part-time VP Research. They were accomplished researchers who have all profoundly influenced PHC, but they tended to do the VP Research functions off the side of their

desk, and although they accomplished many important things, they left some of the major obstacles unresolved. Yvonne took on chronic structural problems in a methodical and patient fashion and was able to solve them in her diplomatic, consultative way. She established the PHC Research Institute, formalized a lot of ad hoc processes and fixed a lot of long-standing problems. More importantly, Yvonne influenced the research culture of the institution. Research is no longer considered an ivory tower activity done by the few but something that forms an integral part of all we do at PHC and a vital part of providing outstanding patient care. She’s done that, not by being loud and pushy, but by being firm and always gently reminding everyone – administration, staff and faculty – about how research can and should be incorporated into what we do. What was most attractive and compelling about Yvonne was her persistently positive attitude. When she thought something was worthwhile, she did everything she could to make it happen. She is a CAN DO person. She was involved in the recruitment of many excellent new researchers. She worked hard to find space, salary support and start-up funding for these individuals, and the fact that she was trusted and respected by everyone at the hospital and the university allowed her to broker important deals and partnerships. Thankfully, Yvonne was equally successful in recruiting and retaining staff in the Research Institute. She and her excellent team have left the house in order and thus my trepidation is only mild. We are in good hands! Other Updates The Research Institute is pleased to welcome Mr. Dick Vollet as the new President and CEO of St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation (SPHF). The SPH Foundation provides tremendous support in driving forward research, education and patient care at St. Paul’s Hospital. Mr. Vollet’s background and experience working with non-profit organizations will help oversee all future operations at the Foundation. To kick off the season, St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation has begun fundraising with the annual 2012 Lights of Hope campaign. This year’s goal is to raise $2.0 million towards some of St. Paul’s Hospital’s needs. Visit www.lightsofhope.com to learn more.

MESSAGE FROM PETER PARÉ INTERIM VP RESEARCH & ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

I am pleased to announce the results of a unique partnership between PHCRI, the St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation (SPHF) and the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research to fund junior researchers at PHC. The collaboration was initiated by our former VP Research Dr Yvonne Lefebvre and serves as a fitting legacy to her leadership. Outstanding applications were received from PHCRI’s research centres and peer reviewed by the MSFHR and a panel of experts external to PHC. The result of this competition produced awards for four new researchers at PHCRI:

Drs. Kora DeBeck and Art Poon of BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDs, each receiving a MSF/SPHF/PHCRI Scholar Award

Drs. Jordan Guenette and Tillie Hackett of UBC James Hogg Research Centre, each receiving the SPHF/PHCRI New Investigator Award

There will be a celebration and introduction of the investigators in the New Lecture Theatre on December 12. Stay tuned for an invitation to come later this month. Addictions research and training at Providence has taken momentous strides this past month. Goldcorp Centre for Mental Health announced a $5-million donation towards mental health and addictions research. Of this amount, $3-million was gifted to St. Paul’s Hospital for the establishment of the Goldcorp Fellowship in Addiction Medicine, an addiction medicine training program unique to Western Canada. The Fellowship will be led by Dr. Evan Wood, co-director of the Urban Health Research Initiative at BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS (BC-CfE). This generous gift is an opportunity to enhance training, research and treatment for addictions and related disorders. Coupled with this exciting funding announcement was the naming of Dr. Evan Wood as the Tier 1 Canadian Research Chair in Inner City Medicine by the Government of Canada. This prestigious award is for 7 years and is renewable. Dr. Wood has been instrumental in the research and implementation of addiction treatment in B.C. This appointment not only validates Dr. Wood’s position but is a significant step forward in addressing the struggles of a vulnerable population. (Continued on Page 2…)

MESSAGE FROM PETER PARÉ INTERIM VP RESEARCH

The Research Institute is pleased to support the blooming careers of young researchers. As previously announced, a reception is being held on December 12 to celebrate the MSFHR/SPHF/PHCRI Scholar and New Investigator Awards. I invite PHC staff and researchers to join us in commemorating this unique partnership and to meet the award recipients at this special event. Please contact [email protected] for more information and for registration. This will be my last message as Interim VP Research. It has been a short but stimulating stint in this important position. I have

been on a steep learning curve, and I thank everyone who answered my naïve questions and brought me up to date on the key issues facing PHCRI. As I write, negotiations are in progress with the new VP Research. That person will have the challenge of maintaining and enhancing Providence’s role as a major academic medical centre. That challenge will be achievable because of the many expert and sympathetic people within and outside the institution who are loyal and supportive of PHC. I’d like to especially thank the outstanding staff within PHCRI and Dr. Howard Feldman, Executive Associate Dean, Research for UBC. I have really gained an appreciation of our strengths while in this position and one of them is our selection of specific populations of emphasis which has allowed us to develop excellence in clinical care and the integration of research into clinical care. The BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS remains the gold standard for achieving this goal. I recently had the opportunity to attend their bi-annual HIV/Antiretroviral Update which was attended by over 300 professionals from across the province who are involved in various aspects of clinical care and research in HIV/AIDS and related disorders. At the conference, the latest research results were presented as were the plans for the rapid and efficient translation of those results into practice to benefit the patients with these disorders. This seamless integration of high quality clinical research with care has allowed B.C. to be global leaders in the major advances in HIV care that have taken place: the use of HAART and more recently the implementation of a strategy to eliminate HIV; the Treatment as Prevention strategy.
