Quantitative research methodology

(Case studies)

Introduction

Quantitative research method is the process of collecting numerical data’s and analyzing

data’s using quantitative methods. The aim is to understand the methodology followed in this

method through case study.

Case study

Topic: A STUD !" #"$%U&"'&S !$ %#()T#"( !" *&S!U*'&

USA(& #" A" #"ST#TUT#!" %#+*A*

The research was done ,y (.T)A"(A*A- S.SU*&S) +A%A-# using quantitative research

method. The research started in the year /012.

Purpose of research3 To prove quantitatively that The purpose of this research is to

investigate the lighting in a li,rary and to determine that how the lighting in li,rary

influences the resource usage and to 4now how lighting affects the user from using the li,rary

resources effectively The main hypotheses are3

15 The lighting provided in li,rary is quantitative and qualitatively sufficient for using li,raryresources

/5 The lighting affects the resource usage in the li,rary

The study started with literature review of many 6ournals ,oo4s articles related to lighting in

a li,rary. This study helps him to found out the gap in the literature study. The gap which he

found out is that the quantitative analysis of lighting in a li,rary has not yet done in field. The

literature study is the ,ase for every step in his research.

Tactics

8arious methods used for collecting data’s are literature study questionnaire survey and using

architectural evaluation system. *esearch method of the study is of ,oth quantitative and

qualitative. An institution li,rary from south #ndia is chosen as a case study. The data analysisis performed ,y providing questionnaires to li,rary users and using their replies for

quantitative analysis. As a qualitative measure the light intensity reading is ta4en at various

reading zones of li,rary and also daylight a,out a meter outside the doors and windows is

noted for analysis

 System of enquiry

The researcher uses sensors to measure the lighting in deci, els. Thus the research is ,ased on

mathematical calculations .#n national and international levels people have done qualitative

research related to a study on influences of lighting on resource usage in an institution li,rary

to provide a and comforta,le indoor environment. Thus the research converges  to resultswhich already proved through qualitative analysis. The research is ,ased on behavior of day

light.

Assumptions

• Ontology3  9hilosophy of the research ,ased on the lighting level which e:ist in

li,rary ;reality5. The result of research is evaluated numerically and hence the

research is o,6ective.

• Epistemological:  #t is independent of the researcher and one should get similar

results no matter who carries out the research.

*esearch type

This research analyze the facts and information using instrument set up and the results which

o,tained from the research can ,e applied in lighting of a li,rary.

*esearch identifies with<.

Postivism Naturalistic

• The research have e:ternal validity3

The data is generalizable  to a larger

 population

• This research is reliable3

situation.

• The research is credible3 researcher

chec4 the data with interviews.

• The research is transferable3

• The artificial light can ,e used in any

Secondary data3 +oo4s -ournals &lectronic resources

!uestionnaire survey

Questionnaires are provided to the li,rary users and as4ed to evaluate the question onthe scale provided. #n the mean time the duration of effective resource usage is noted.

The data is collected in the morning afternoon and evening of a sunny day. Su,6ects

selected for survey included occupants in li,rary are monitored three different times

in a day.

#dentify gap in the literature? reading environment can ,e easily affected ,y environmental

factors such as light noise and how it influences readers in using resources is studied.

*esearchers main source of information is #nternet. This saves researchers precious

time and money.

Ethical onsiderations in (esearch

The researcher reports the full research in we,site research gate honestly. The

researcher honors the requests and restrictions of the research site. Any,ody if want to

Preparation of data analysis

According to the research researcher edited the datas from literature study. After ta4ing

measurements from li,rary he codified the datas using graphs and ta,les. This helps him to

easily represent his findings. &ven comparison ta,le made ,y researcher for feed,ac4 which

he got from people in li,rary of South #ndia . The whole report is divided into chapters ,ased

on his findings in different morning afternoon and evening of a sunny day he used.

(eport *riting

The report starts with an a,stract of the pro6ect which give an idea a,out the research withinminutes. The researcher divided the research into 2 chapters .The report starts with an

introduction chapter and end with a conclusion chapter. &ach chapter have an introduction

and a summary. The introduction chapter is divided into 1.1 to 1. su, headings .%i4ewise

each chapter is divided into su, headings. #n chapter 1 he mentioned a,out aim o,6ective

methodology and scope of his research. The second chapter includes review of relevant

literature. #t includes studies in national and international levels. )is study on the lighting in

the li,rary is summarized in the ne:t chapter. #n rest chapter he mentioned how he selected

the samples and how he have done quantitative analysis. #n the ne:t chapter he e:plains how

he set up the instrument and how he collected the datas. The ne:t two chapters deals withresults in different timing and the very ne:t chapters tal4s a,out the comparison with lighting

of a li,rary in South #ndia. This followed ,y analysis and conclusion chapters. The researcher

maintained a continuity in his report and this will help the reader to understand his research

more clearly.
