• Wiley’sResearcherDataInsightsSurveywaslaunchedearlierthisyeartounderstandhowandwhyresearchersmaketheirresearchdatapubliclyavailable.Thestudy’sresults,highlightedbelow,areintendedtoadvancetheglobalconversationaboutdatasharingandhelpWileybettermeettheneedsofourresearchers,authors,andpartnersintherapidlyevolvinglandscapeofscientificresearchandcommunications.
• ThesurveywasdeployedinMarch2014andreceivedmorethan2,250responsesfromresearchersaroundtheworld.
Datasharingpracticesvarywidelyacrossresearchfieldsandgeographicareas.Justoverhalfofresearchersreportmakingtheirdatapubliclyavailable,thougharchivingresultsinrepositoriesisnotyetthenorm.
Datasharing,specificallybywayofdatarepositories,ismostprevalentamongstlifescientists,particularlythoseintheearthandenvironmentalandagricultureandfoodsciences.
AtypicalHealth Science researcher saysshewouldbemotivatedtoshareherdatainthefutureinordertobenefitthepublic,solongasprivacyandethicalconcernsareassuaged.
AtypicalLife Science researchersaysshewouldbemotivatedtosharemoreofherdatainthefutureifshewasguaranteedpropercredit.
AtypicalPhysical Science researchersaysshewouldbemotivatedtoshareherdatainthefuturebecauseitisstandardpracticewithinherresearchcommunityandbecauseitincreasestheimpactandvisibilityofherwork.
AtypicalSocial Science and Humanities researchersaysshewouldbemotivatedtoshareherdatainthefutureifitincreasedtheimpactandvisibilityofherworkorifshewasrequiredtobyherfunder.
