Constraints on data sharing Possible solutions / approaches

• Briefly list some reasons why certain data can’t be shared (15 minutes)• Consider whether any actions could be taken to reduce or overcome

these restrictions (15 minutes)• Feed back

ResearchersDiscussion exercise

• What types of data are you creating? (10 minutes)– Formats, volume, sensitive

• What issues do you have in managing your data? (20 minutes)– Storage & backup– Accessing data from home– Understanding your data– Confidentiality

Research Support StaffExercise 1: Research data management activities

In your groups and using the post-its, jot down what sorts of Outputs you think ‘research data’ might include (5 minutes).

Next, jot down a few activities you might associate with research Data management. Please list one activity per post-it. (15 minutes)

Each group will feed back their lists for discussion (10 minutes)

Exercise 2: Roles and responsibilities

Based on the outcomes of exercise 1 and what you’ve just heard, discuss in your groups which of these you would be responsible for undertaking and which would be someone else’s responsibility.

Place each activity under the role you feel should be responsible for providing support appropriate on the table. In many cases there will be overlap between responsibilities but please place each activity under the role you feel is most appropriate as the first point of contact. (20 minutes)

Think about which activities you currently feel confident about supporting in your role and which you feel you’d need further training to take on effectively. (10 minutes)

Each group will feed back their lists for discussion.

Who needs to be involved in supporting RDM activities: roles and responsibilities

Please place each of your post-its listing specific data management activities under one of the following headings. In many cases there will be overlap between responsibilities but please place each activity under the role you feel is most appropriate as the first point of contact.

Mixed audience of Researchers and Support StaffExercise 1: Data management planning

In groups, look over the data management plan template and think about the research workflows in place in various Schools/Colleges.

Are there any existing research processes could be adapted to fulfil data management planning Requirements?

Discuss within your group for 20 minutes.

Each group will feed back their lists for discussion (5 minutes).
