The Ph.D. in Transpersonal Psychology at ITP is a three-year program designed for adult learners seeking an intimate educational environment, personal transformation, and preparation to become agents for change in the rapidly-expanding field of Transpersonal Psychology.

As a student in the Transpersonal Ph.D. Program, you will be mentored in your development as an open and compassionate person with 1) doctoral-level mastery of research methods, critical thinking, and scholarly writing; 2) knowledge that spans intellectual understanding, emotional intelligence, embodied knowing, and spiritual insight; and 3) experience in the application of transpersonal principles and practices in the service of personal, professional, and social transformation.

Our faculty are leaders in the field of transpersonal psychology. They are fully engaged with students in the classroom, accessible for student consultation, and provide the core of a true learning community. With faculty support and guidance, you will be encouraged to research areas that reflect both your interests and your passions. The research of ITP’s doctoral students has garnered more than 15 APA awards for excellence.

ITP’s six areas of study — mind, body, spirit, emotions, creativity and community — are integrated into the required coursework. Additionally, the program includes two years of self-designed praxis, where the transpersonal is applied in real-world settings.

The program is structured to allow maximum flexibility for adult learners. You will have the choice of taking only the required classes (10 to 12 units per quarter) and being on campus as little as one evening and one day per week, or registering for as many as 18 units per quarter, enjoying our rich elective course offerings, specializations, and campus services and events. Optional specializations include Creative Expression, Transpersonal Education & Research, Spiritual Guidance, and Transformational Life Coaching.

Our graduates often maintain composite careers, combining such activities as practice in the healing arts, consulting, teaching, research, writing and publishing, leading workshops, organizational development, and in general, advancing the field of transpersonal psychology in many unique and innovative ways.
