Thank you for your interest in Fishbrook Design Studio. We are a small, efficient office with a focus on design and client service. Our office is located 40 minutes north of Boston.

I have over two decades of experience with residential projects. My work ranges from small, well crafted homes for value-conscious suburbanites to exclusive homes on Cape Cod and luxury high-rise residences in Boston. Over the years my practice has evolved to include work for educational institutions as well as commercial, retail and hospitality clients. These projects bring a unique rigor and perspective to my residential work.

I seamlessly incorporate sustainable strategies into every design. I believe sustainablilty can be cost-neutral and aesthetic-neutral. Sustainable is simply the right way to think.

This booklet contains images and descriptions of some of my private residential projects. In addition to completed projects, it includes design sketches that illustrate our process.

$1.4 million

Inspired by traditional New England “connected” architecture and minimalist modernism, this project renovates and adds

to an 18th century saltbox. It’s large expanses of glass over look a stunning 7 acre meadow and pond. The addition with

it’s separate guest house, decks and wide overhanging roofs is a modern counterpoint to the antique house and barn. The

design uses a range of sustainable materials including super-insulating SIPs panels. The overhanging roof and fenestration

are carefully crafted to maximize passive solar energy.

We envisioned a gracious expansion to this antique Dutch co-

lonial. The design focused on enlarging the kitchen and living

areas and includes utility and structural upgrades.

The design carefully maintains the delicate detail and proportions

of this 1860's era home. The result is spacious in layout,

consistent in detail and is thoroughly appointed with

modern amenities.

LOFT APARTMENTBoston, MA 1995

Located in a renovated 1880s cigar factory, this is an urban home for a young professional couple. A series of seven foot

high walls (the beams of the ceiling are ten feet above the floor) screen utility elements: Kitchen, Bathroom, Closet and

Mechanical Room in this 1,300 apartment. The walls are finished in painted plaster at the Living Area and contain book

shelves on the side that faces the exterior. The Bedroom is also located a privileged position at the front of the building

where tall windows overlook the West End neighborhood below Beacon Hill.

Our clients asked “Is it possible to create a home comfortable enough for family gatherings which is also sustainable and

‘green’?” We answered, “Of course.” Our design uses SIPs construction in the walls and roof. These super-insulating panels

offer the lowest construction cost and the highest energy efficiency. Careful site orientation controls solar gain. Radiant

heating and sustainable, local materials further reduce the carbon footprint and create a comfortable environment for

generations to come.

SANCTUARY HOUSEAndover, MA

Perched on a knoll overlooking preservation

land, this carefully crafted enclave incorpo-

rates multiple sustainable strategies: active/

passive solar energy, SIPs construction, locally

harvested materials, radiant heat and high-

efficiency mechanical systems.

WINTER COTTAGEOld Forge, NY

Our design for this SIPs project in the Adiron-

dack League Club meshes the latest energy

technology with the venerable building tradi-

tions of it’s locale. The grace and simplicity of

the Adirondack style inspire this addition to a

small family compound on Bisby Lake.

HOME for FAMILY and ART COLLECTIONAndover, MA

This 1830s farm house suffered myopic ‘im-

provements’ of the ages. Our design expands

and rationalizes the home to comfortably

accommodate a family which has three active

preteen boys and an extraordinary interna-

tional art collection.

ABOUT FISHBROOK DESIGN STUDIO:

“Architecture is about people as much as it is about wood and stone.”

Matthew founded Fishbrook Design Studio in 2004. His practice focuses on Hospitality, Residential, Retail, Education and Commercial projects. Fishbrook is a nimble and efficient firm. It uses technology and a network of consultants to take on projects nationwide and next door. Fishbrook has recent projects in North Carolina, Vermont and Connecticut as well as Massachusetts. Matthew has also completed projects in California, Illinois, Florida, New York and New Jersey.

“I make it a priority to be directly involved with each project. My relation-ships with owners and contractors are the cornerstone of this practice. The voices of the owners, the builders and the designers must all be heard in the search for solutions which serve the budget and schedule as well as space, spirit and function.”

A registered architect with 22 years of experience, Matthew is the father of a twelve year old daughter and resides in North Andover, MA. Before start-ing Fishbrook, he worked at architectural firms in Boston and Cambridge. After 15 years at larger corporate firms he founded Fishbrook as a way of working in a more personal and crafted manner. He has deep experience designing institutional projects as well as high end residences. He has man-aged retail, hospitality and public space projects. These larger, fast-track projects provide a context for his current practice.

Matthew serves on the Historic District Commissions in Boxford and Haver-hill. He has been appointed to the Mayor’s Downtown Development Com-mission in Haverhill. His studio was originally located in Boxford, MA in a renovated barn overlooking the Fish Brook. In January, 2011 the practice moved to a loft space in the ‘Arts District’ of Haverhill, MA north of Boston.
