We have been busy in the local community this month; speaking to as many enterprising people as possible. As the climate begins to warm (subtly, I’ll admit), we have been feeling quite sociable and eager to hear and recite interesting tales.
I ventured down to the Devas Club to report on its recent refurbishment and to chat to current Chair of the Trustees Johnny Devas. The independent youth charity was founded in 1884 and has quite a history, including royal visits, countless
awards and the ability to change young people’s lives. Read more on page 8.
The Residents’ Journal has also spoken to the creator of MyShowcase (p. 20). A woman with an impressive media background and the nous to see her ideas to fruition, Nancy Cruickshank launched a new beauty retail concept and
her ‘stylists’ are currently running beauty parties all across London. Not content with the celebration of just one female entrepreneur, we also sought out Susan Hanage, aka. Annabel of NappyValleyNet (p. 22) to find out how one of our
favourite online forums began.

Prose in your Proximity SW11-based writer Andrew Nicholson loves reading novels that are set in London; however, he felt a distinct lack of connection when none mentioned his own stomping ground south of the river. Putting the world to rights in his book Soldiers and Sisterhood, Andrew began a literary journey in which one of his protagonists, Becca, runs a shop on Webbs Road, lives locally and is a familiar figure at the Battersea Arts Centre. The story chronicles the life of Becca and her brother Phil, an ex-SAS action hero author as he attempts to rebuild his life. Financial BoostBattersea Arts Centre has recently been awarded a grant of £1 million over three years from ACE and the Esmée Fairbarn Foundation. The money will be designated for the Collaborative Touring Consortium (CTC), an innovative new touring model which will showcase local talent alongside new work from Battersea Arts Centre across the country. The CTC will bring innovative theatre to six areas of ‘low arts engagement.’

london livingWandsworth is the favoured nest-egg
for aspiring young professionals, a new study by Lloyds TSB reveals. Research
found that the borough is hugely popular with people aged 25-35 due to enviable
transport links, close proximity to the City and West End, as well as its various parks. In addition, the borough has charged the country’s lowest average council tax bills for the past 20 years. This year’s Band D bill in Wandsworth is £686 compared to a London average of more than £1,300.

Tree oF liFeAn extensive tree survey recently took place on Clapham Common to ensure the flora was not affected by the highly contagious Ash Die-Back disease and, thankfully, the trees were reported to be in great health. The Friends of Clapham Common (FOCC) joined forces with arboriculturalist Clive Mayhew to undertake the task and were on the lookout for brown leaf-tips and leaf-stems. The Friends work actively with the community to maintain and enhance the beauty and character of Clapham Common.

SaFe cycleS‘Bike hangers,’ which offer secure on-street parking for cycles, could be installed on local streets soon. The Balham People website reports that the Wandsworth Cycling Campaign (WCC) has been contacted by Cyclehoop, which manages these ‘hangers’ in Lambeth, where 40 of the lockers are already in place. If the council enters discussions with Cyclehoop, residents would benefit from a secure locking bay for their bikes. One hanger has space for six bikes and only takes up about half a car parking bay. Food, gloriouS FoodHere at Residents’ Journal HQ, we were eagerly anticipating the arrival of May’s Fabulous Feast Food Festival on St John’s Hill. Now that it is over (sob) we are happy to announce the winner of the Great Battersea Bake Off. Competition was stiff and the judging drew a crowd of onlookers who were eager to know
the result. We can reveal that Laura Amos of The Dessert Deli judged the winner of the brownie competition to be Rachel James’ Valencian orange and almond entry. Savannah-Rose Williams, 11, of Putney, won the children’s fairy
cake competition.

hiT clapham hardLambeth Council is stepping up the campaign to save Clapham Fire Station with a newly launched
video on YouTube, ‘Every Second Counts,’ highlighting fears over station closures. The
Council says that, ‘according to the London Fire Brigade, the Mayor’s proposals will actually mean
that the average time it takes the first fire engine to reach an emergency will rise by 34 seconds.’ The organisation adds: ‘We want our residents to have locally based emergency services to deal quickly with incidents.’ The Mayor’s public consultation
on the future of fire stations in London ends on 17 June 2013 and there is an online petition:

It’s Row tImeGarnering much local media coverage and support for their Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, Dan Howie and Will North are set to take part in a gruelling two-man boat race across the Atlantic Ocean in December this year. Living and training locally (Dan lives just off Wandsworth Common and Will lives in Battersea), the pair are aiming to raise £200,000 for three charities: Cancer Research UK, Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research and St Anna’s, and have already received financial support from a number of London primary schools. As the duo row around the clock in two-hour shifts they will have to contend with physical pain, exhaustion, sleep deprivation and 50ft waves, not to mention sea creatures.

To mark the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation, the council is actively encouraging residents to throw street parties over two
weekends in June (1 and 2) and July (13 and 14). Local shindigs at street-
level were quashed before locals even got the bunting down from the
attic for the 2011 Royal Wedding and last summer’s Diamond
Jubilee. Costs, bureaucracy and red tape stood in the way. This year, Wandsworth Council has waived the normal £50 fee for arranging a road closure, while all the other
information that’s usually required can be submitted online via a simple
internet questionnaire.

New Mayor in town
Councillor Angela Graham has recently been appointed as the Mayor
of Wandsworth, pledging to spend her year in the role doing as much as possible to make a difference to the lives of young people. The mayor’s
inaugural ceremony at the town hall also saw Southfields ward Councillor
Kim Caddy named deputy mayor.
wandswoRth walksGet a breath of fresh air and enjoy a guided stroll through some of the local area’s most beautiful parks. The council has asked Jane Clarke of the London Wildlife Trust to lead walks in King George’s Park (14, 28 June) and Wandsworth Park (7, 21 June) (pictured). She will be wearing a green London Wildlife Trust top and will pass on information about wildlife, the history of the parks and how they are managed. The walks will take place from 2pm to 2.45pm and the meeting place at King George’s Park is by the One O’clock Centre and in Wandsworth Park by the café.

about the renovation of the young people’s charity hub on Stormont Road
The Devas Club’s
There is a continuous stream of energy flowing from the Devas Club and its basement recording hub, Stormont Studios. This energy is undoubtedly created by the inspirational
young people who enter the threshold and by the staff who operate its vast range of creative arts offerings. In recent years, however, the building has not quite been able to fulfill all of its aspirations, as it was in need of some renovation works and a dose of TLC. Courtesy of a generous donation, the result of a blossoming partnership between Wandsworth Council and this registered charity, the building on Stormont Road has been revived and afforded a new lease of life. Ahead of the Devas Club’s re-launch on 4 July, the Residents’ Journal has explored its history to reveal a story littered with accolades and royal visits, unexpected personal catastrophe and a heartwarming human response.
The club’s motto proudly proclaims: ‘Providing opportunities for young people since 1884,’ and
Johnny Devas, the current Chair of Trustees, is able to list an exhaustive selection of creative arts activities and opportunities available to young people in the area. The centre provides a fully-equipped recording studio (Stormont Studios) and a technician to guide burgeoning musicians and producers; cookery and fashion classes, running and football clubs, drama and theatre workshops, and, of course, street dance classes, for which the Devas Club is most widely known. Last year alone, Riccochet, one of the six groups that practises here, won Gold in the International Street Dance Championships. Another group, Definitives, won The Best On, a European dance competition in Barcelona.
The present building was completed as ‘a purpose-built youth club in 1969 in the then fashionable Brutalist’ style,’ Johnny tells me. This inevitably incorporated lots of bare concrete and dark brick, he laughs. The Chair also informs me, ironically, that lots of people guessed that the building on Stormont Road was an old disused cinema

or telephone exchange – a far cry from a thriving social hub. ‘We did not have enough funds to renovate the whole building, so we asked the young members for their choice of priorities, and they said very clearly that improving the ground floor was top of the agenda,’ he explains.
The works to date have transformed the Devas Club into a light-filled, open space, reflecting the endeavours of the bright young people who learn and create art within its walls. The inside of the building has been given a lick of fresh white paint, while a new entranceway and windows flood the building with sunshine (if we are so lucky to receive it). Johnny Devas is excited to announce the launch of a brand new teaching kitchen for up to eight budding chefs, a new art room, enlarged courtyard with improved accessibility and disabled toilets, an access ramp and internal wheelchair hoist. Plans for the courtyard are excitingly already beginning to form and a potential vegetable and herb garden might one day supply the kitchen.
This spirit of providing a smörgåsbord of opportunities for young people is a tradition carried on from the club’s’ foundation in 1884. A University College Oxford-man,
Jocelyn Devas set up the club for ‘working lads,’ above a coffee tavern in Battersea. The original aim was to teach young men skills that they could apply in their working lives. Sadly, the original Devas was killed while climbing in the Alps in 1885, but his college friends decided to carry on his work in his stead. ‘The club moved to a large building in Thessally Road in Nine Elms in 1907,’ Johnny tells me, ‘but with the comprehensive redevelopment to create the New Covent Garden Market, the club moved again in 1969 to its present purpose-built building.’ Running your eye over the organisation’s vast archive, a plethora of images showcase the strong relationship that the club enjoys with Oxford University and also, support, in the form of visits, from the Royal Family.
Today the Devas Club has 800 registered young members and continues to forge lasting relationships. Most recently the organisation was chosen by Wandsworth Council as one of its five major clubs in the borough and in June 2012, the club trustees and the council signed a remarkable 25-year agreement that enabled the council to invest in the complete refurbishment of the ground floor of the club. Johnny explains: ‘I think the club is unusual in its close partnership with Wandsworth Council. We bring a long history of working with generations of young people in Battersea, providing the facilities and bringing in specialist teams as youth partners. The council provides the large core team of youth work staff, and with that, all of their experience of modern youth-work and direct links with all the other council services.’ He adds that as an independent charity, the Devas Club can be ‘light-footed’ with their plans and move quickly to implement a good idea if it should arise on the table.
‘I still get a buzz out of being in the building, meeting the young members and seeing what they are doing. There is a relaxed, fun and purposeful atmosphere in the club,’ says Johnny. ‘I also enjoy working with a good team, developing new ideas for programmes and making improvements to the facilities. Young people seem to shine when they are given a chance with decent facilities.’ Following the refurbishment, the building can now shine, as well as the young people. We sincerely hope that the Devas Club is around for another one hundred years, or more. n

last summer saw bunting flung across the country as the nation embraced the Jubilee spirit. the royal element may have since passed, but the folks over at ritherdon road see no reason why the festivities need stop there. this year’s event, put together by the traders association of ritherdon road, features all the elements of a street party shebang, from face-painting to street stalls. look out for the French café, which is running a ‘taste the difference’ competition, and Quirky dovetail, which is offering a 10 per cent discount on the day.

For food lovers like ourselves, there can be little else more tempting than a three day bash that places the source of our content centre stage. Foodies Festival has a whistle-stop tour of the country pencilled in for this summer, but fortunately for us it will be making a pit stop in clapham this June. with it comes a selection of prime restaurants (Jamie oliver’s Barbecoa and Jamie’s italian, as well as high street curry kingdom Masala Zone have signed up to take part), which will set up shop on clapham common as part of a sprawling metropolis of food stalls.

Wandsworth’s de Morgan Centre presents an exhibition documenting one of Battersea’s most remarkable former residents. When Old Battersea House faced demolition in 1931, eccentric art collector and author anna Marie diana Wilhelmina Stirling persuaded the council to permit her tenancy of the dilapidated building. the de Morgan Foundation’s exhibition commemorates Mrs Stirling’s contribution to the maintenance of arts and crafts for posterity and includes examples of Stirling’s novels, photographs of her Battersea stamping ground and some of the art she collected over her time there.

Canine debates over who rules Battersea Park are set to reach a definitive conclusion this month as south west London’s pooches prepare to do battle at the annual Battersea Park dog Show. While the dogs are preoccupied with looking their best, owners can make the most of the fun distractions at hand, which will include refreshment stalls aplenty and a funfair. the ensuing Monday morning dog walk hopefully shouldn’t be too awkward though; there are plenty of prizes up for grabs (rosettes will be awarded for 1st to 6th place in each category), so with a bit of luck no mutt will leave empty handed.

the angst, inner turmoil and political scheming of William Shakespeare’s Henry V arrive at Clapham’s Picturehouse with the launch of this summer’s globe on Screen 2013 series. Visions of the Universe encompasses more than 100 awe-inspiring snapshots, from glittering clusters of stars forming thousands of light years away to the ‘mars window’ where the latest images from Nasa’s mars curiosity rover space mission are beamed onto the wall.

MINT Polo in the Park returns to the historic fields of Hurlingham Park this month, as polo teams from Sydney, Abu Dhabi, Moscow, Delhi and Buenos Aires
join the home side on the pitch. With bursting-at-the-seams spectator stands, a sea of summer hats, blazers and boat shoes, the quintessentially British atmosphere, pepped up with plenty of Pimm’s supping, has become a highlight in both the summer social and sporting calendars since its launch in 2008. The Residents’ Journal was fortunate enough to ask Rory Heron, founder of the event, a few questions in the run-up.
How did you first come across polo and why did you choose the sport as a business platform?It was my old friend and business partner Daniel Fox Davis who introduced me to the sport. I saw a real opportunity in polo, as I felt that it was one of the only sports that had not yet been made commercially viable. Polo had not been played in London since the end of World War II, so I felt that it was time to bring it back to its spiritual home at Hurlingham Park. Polo was seen as an elitist country sport that simply was not played in the city – until now. I saw the opportunity to mix sport and society, and bring it to the people. The event is a place anyone can attend, regardless of how they dress, or their social standing.
Where did you grow up and what are your interests outside of the polo world? I grew up on the South Coast and then moved to London, where I lived in various locations around Kensington and Chelsea. I now live with my wife and children in Battersea. Coming from the South Coast, sailing was my sport, and I actually represented GB for
a while. Since then, I have done a lot of off-shore sailing and hold a few records, including the Cape to Rio Yacht Race and Fastnet Race. It was my love of sailing that got me interested in sports marketing.
Do you see polo as a quintessentially British sport, and do you think it has a place in contemporary British culture?Yes, I think people associate polo with Britishness, royalty and gentry, which made the sport exclusive and inaccessible. We set out to keep the same historical prestige of the sport, while making it easy for people to enjoy. We moved it back to the city, offered affordable tickets (starting at £20) and changed the rules to make it easier to understand. The rules of polo had not been changed since 1924, so it was time to modernise them to reflect the culture of today. I feel that nothing could be more British than a weekend at Hurlingham Park.
Polo is often criticised for being elitist. Do you agree with this, or do you think that MINT Polo in the Park has changed the public perception of the sport?I think polo will always be elitist. It’s just the nature of the game. However, we have introduced 50-60,000 people to the sport over the past few years, so in a way, we are bringing the sport to the masses, which is the opposite of the elite. Although there is no dress code, and we don’t turn anyone away at the entrance for any reason, we have found that people like dressing up for the event to identify with the pomp and ceremony that is usually associated with the sport.

There’s an awful lot you can hope to find in a loft, but it’s safe to say that Clapham High Street’s loft turned casually cool bar-cum-restaurant surpasses the highest of expectations. Perhaps along the same assumption that a loft is only
explored by those who deign to seek it out, The Loft has managed to escape the diaries of the scene-seeking party goers who regularly haunt Clapham’s night spots, and has remained a destination dedicated to locals. This is for the gain of the establishment and its custom, since it affords the bar the luxury of breathing space (so often lacking in venues across the capital) as well as an exclusive quality fuelled by the distinct feeling that you’re enjoying something everyone else is mad to be missing out on. Vast and inviting leather sofas stretch along the walls, peppered by the odd cow-hide rug and dinky bar stool, below windows that afford views of bustling Clapham. Interior design aside, The Loft also all-importantly does what it says on the tin: serves award-winning (all utterly deserving) cocktails infused with more than 40 carefully chosen homemade ingredients, plus a varied selection of draughts and bottled beers, alongside platters of simple yet delicious nibbles (an unpretentious menu revolves around whether foods can be delivered from plate to mouth one hand or two, or, last resort, via fork). A local haunt that’s well worth the trip upstairs. n

Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl’ is ringing in my ears as I stumble giddily out of The King of Ladies Man, the irreverent 70s bachelor pad-esque secret bar concealed in a fake launderette at The Breakfast Club. A couple of amaretto sours inside me and enough food to make my
buttons groan, I leave the latest outpost of the retro dining chain totally contented and very, very full.
Having made its mark on the culinary scene in 2005, when The Breakfast Club first sprung into being, feeding the masses queuing nightly at its Soho doors for their all day-brunch fix, this is the first of the eatery’s five restaurants to spring up on the south side of the river. The latest addition to the family follows the same formula of comfort food and informal dining with the nostalgia-factor turned up full blast; think Smeg fridges, retro 50s inspired furniture and bright orange booths.
The taste-sensation that is the brunch menu, available until 5pm, rattles through devilishly delicious chorizo hash browns and the saucy breakfast burrito to a list of eggs as long as your arm, rustled up every which way. I visit in the evening and dive greedily into the comfort food section, opting for a Big Bad Burrito which lives up to its name and comes loaded with a flavoursome medley of chicken, refried beans, cheese, spicy pepper sauce and wholegrain rice, all parcelled up neatly into a tortilla, with generous dollops of guacamole and sour cream waiting on the sidelines. My friend’s hefty doorstop of a pulled pork sandwich would no doubt have actually held a door ajar. Stuffed to bursting in a bun, the tender, slow-roasted barbecue pork came with pickled gherkins, crispy skin-on chips and a side of coleslaw. Between us, we put away enough sustenance to tackle Ben Nevis.
Pudding was really rather unnecessary at this point, but my inability to say no to oozing hot chocolate brownie and banoffee pie nearly tipped me into a food coma, almost on a par with Christmas Day’s eyes-bigger-than-belly syndrome.
To aid the digestion process, the friendly and attentive waiters conspiratorially pointed us in the direction of ‘the launderette.’ Through the hidden panel we hopped for ‘Disco Classic’ cocktails. The dim-lighting, dark-wood panelling, gold lamé and air of secrecy give the hidden nook a slightly seedy element, which ups the fun factor several notches. I have a suspicion it won’t stay much of a secret for long. n

hard at work entering one of the industry’s most-
lauded competitions: The Janine Stone Young Interior
Designer Award. The Residents’ Journal finds out more
Time is up. Step away from the sketchbook. As you flick through this magazine graduates across the length and breadth of the country are waiting with baited breath
for a very special announcement. Every year hoards of design students get creative and release their imaginations on paper for the Janine Stone Young Interior Designer Award (YIDA), and 2013 has proved no different. The competition, now in its third year, was founded by international luxury design brand, Janine Stone. The company has a global reach and builds and refurbishes exceptional private residences all over the world. Ahead of the awards ceremony this July, the Residents’ Journal reveals the recently announced judges and 12 finalists.
Strictly for final year BA design degree students studying at a UK university, the competition was created to offer young people a step-up into an industry that is notoriously difficult to join. Janine Stone is once again partnering with the Society of British Interior Design to judge the competition, as well as, for the first time, Interior Educators. The latter organisation was established by academics representing recognised interior design and interior architecture courses at UK universities, meaning the competition attracts the highest calibre of candidates. Founder of Interior Educators Graeme Brooker kickstarted the competition, setting the brief for students. The vehicle for the Janine Stone Young Interior Designer Award 2013 is the students’ final year degree projects. Understandably, competition will be fierce, the first prize includes £10,000 and a paid six-month internship at Janine Stone and previous winners have even gone on to work for the company post-placement.
The judging panel for 2013 is impressive, to say the least. Joining Janine Stone will be one of the world’s most innovative photographers Terry O’Neill, who says of the awards: ‘[YIDA] gives much needed support and encouragement to the next generation of young British interior design talent. offers an extraordinary opportunity for students to connect strongly with the world of design at the very highest level, and it gives them the chance to find a career in this dynamic and vibrant industry.’ Also sitting on the panel is Mount Street-based Italian fashion designer, Alessandra Rich; award-winning ballet dancer Leanne Benjamin, who has always been fascinated by the potential of property development and has renovated numerous properties across London; Graeme Brooker, a British academic, designer, writer and founding director of Interior Educators; Raoul Tawadey, the CEO and founder of ReadWave, a digital publishing platform launched in 2012 and the President of the Society of British Interior Design, Vanessa Brady.
Culminating in an elegant occasion at the Hospital Club in Covent Garden, the ceremony doesn’t just recognise one winner; 12 finalists are chosen and their work is proudly displayed on the night, exposing the graduates’ talent to a plethora of industry experts and contacts. In fact, for the first time since the competition’s origins, the guests at the ceremony will be able to vote for their own winner, who will be the recipient of an individual prize.
It is greatly reassuring to see those at the top of their game reaching down to offer a helping hand to a fresh crop of talent. Janine comments: ‘I myself have been most fortunate to enjoy over 25 years’ involvement with an industry that I am hugely passionate about. Design has been at the very heart of my family and my path into the industry was always encouraged and continually nurtured. It is as a result of this that I want to support the next generation of young design talent and discover the very best individuals of the future.’ We eagerly await the announcement of the winner and look forward to seeing the photographs from the glittering event. n

A former winnerThe Residents’ Journal talks to Tony Tan, the winner of the award in 2011, for some of his insights about the competition
Can you tell us about your winning entry and the vision behind the project?My project was entitled ‘Back to New York City.’ The concept was to embrace sustainability within a studio apartment that had views across to Manhattan from one of the other boroughs. I was designing with a young demographic in mind and the apartment demonstrated strong eco-credentials and presented a slick compact living space.
How did you feel to be offered a position at Janine Stone after your work experience?It was thrilling and exhilarating to become a part of Janine Stone and I have certainly gained a great deal of knowledge across various aspects of interior design. I’ve also gained other business skills, such as presentation, project management and marketing.
How important are competitions such as the Janine Stone Young Interior Designer Award?It is absolutely essential for fresh graduates to get their first job. A paid internship to work with Janine Stone over a range of high-end residential design projects was a great privilege and a personal goal for me. The Janine Stone competition has become the key award for graduates and provides a great opportunity for them to get a taste of the industry and to see how it really works.
What would you tell someone who wanted to enter the competition but was hesitant?Just do it without any doubt. The taking part is fun too and gets you into the frame of mind of a real business pitch and deadlines – it’s all good experience.
What London-based design inspires you?I admire the Georgian aesthetic which can be found across London. In particular, Spitalfields for me has some of the most interesting architecture of that period.

Every time Lisa Comfort wears something she hasn’t made, people seem to notice. ‘A very small portion of my wardrobe is not
homemade, but whenever I wear those things people always seem to ask “did you make that?” There’s always so much disappointment in their face when I tell them no,’ she laughs.

It’s an inconsequential dampener on the monumental successes Lisa has achieved in the past couple of years since launching her one-of-a-kind sewing café Sew Over It. A few years ago, most Londoners could never have envisioned that sewing could grow to develop such a wide appeal – not so Lisa, who chose Clapham, where she had lived in the past,
knowing that her idea would appeal perfectly to the area’s demographic.
Of course, back then no one could anticipate that having reinvigorated the nation’s love of baking, the BBC would champion the cause of sewing as the next traditional and neglected pursuit to promote. Lisa herself admits that she was pleasantly

surprised at the viewing figures for the Great British Sewing Bee (2.7 million of us tuned in to watch the season finale in April). Needless to say, the programme has already been commissioned for an extended second season, to air next year.
Sew Over It was born partly as a result of Lisa’s growing feeling that sewing – her lifetime passion – was becoming a lost skill. ‘Now, I think we’re at a turning point. Even two or three years ago, very few people my age were into sewing, but now it’s become more popular among my generation.’
This growth in popularity has helped bring about an important development for crafters working in the sewing industry: in May 2012 the Craft Hobby Association-UK was set up to support the industry’s many sole traders, such as Lisa.
And the sewing bug has not only bitten young professionals. Arts and crafts superstore Hobbycraft, backed by the support of City ‘superwoman’ Nicola Horlick, has launched a petition to restore sewing back to its rightful throne, on the national school curriculum.
Given her knowledge of the industry, can Lisa put her finger on the reason why sewing has been able to claw its way back to popular consciousness? ‘I think it’s because it can appeal to all ages and interests, which makes it a great skill,’ she says. Sew Over It caters for the universal spectrum of sewing enthusiasts but houses kids’ parties and hen parties all under the same roof. ‘Children love the creative and practical side of sewing, while our hen parties are a really girly, fun event. Plus, sewing’s a bit like shopping: you spend three hours enjoying yourself and then you have this new item of clothing.’
Sew Over It’s charm is probably best validated by sipping tea in one of Lisa’s sell-out classes, but statistics give some impression of how far her childhood hobby has taken her. She reveals the shop has a 75 per cent return rate for customers, a loyalty that is a rarity for shops still in their infancy. Of Lisa’s customers, around 60 per cent are beginners (the most popular class is Intro to Sewing) and she admits that at a beginner level, she’s never come across anyone who just couldn’t do it.
Her unique sewing café is clearly a success story, but it’s not the only one. On the other side of the coin, cheap and readily available fashion shows no sign of subsiding. Recession-defying powerhouse Primark reported sales increases of 24 per cent in April, boosting profits for the first half of its financial year by £238 million.
It’s the antithesis of Lisa’s original, painstaking approach to clothing. Still, she maintains that stores such as Primark aren’t capable of lessening what Sew Over It offers. ‘The beauty of sewing is that you can make
something that no one else has and that fits you. How nice is it to walk out of the door and be absolutely confident that no one’s going to walk by wearing the same dress?’
Her critique of what the High Street lacks is certainly one we can all identify with: ‘Everyone looks like clones,’ she laments. ‘The High Street has outdone itself by creating a very accessible range of clothes that anyone can afford to buy, but the upshot of that is that nothing looks unique anymore.’
So does she practise what she preaches? I already know the answer to this because of her initial confession – however, it’s endearing to know that even a seamstress as talented as Lisa acknowledges that our modern lifestyles demand that we can’t just click our fingers and pretend the simplicity and ease of High Street fashion doesn’t exist. (Don’t underestimate the capabilities of her fingertips though – this is a woman who can whip up a simple skirt in an hour, a dress in two).
She argues that we should at least try to reduce the portion of our wardrobe that we source cheaply, for the sake of global sustainability and our wallets. ‘If you make something out of lovely fabric that fits you well, you’re always going to wear it,’ she reasons.
From the cheery colourful environs of Sew Over It (slogans like ‘Sewing Soothes the Soul, or Something Like That’ adorn the walls and tables) it’s difficult to comprehend the doubt and uncertainty that must have dogged Lisa as she made the brave decision to open a shop in a London, at such a challenging time for British retail. It takes strong resolve to make the entrepreneurial leap, even if it is one cushioned by gingham ribbons and pearl-drop buttons.
As she approached the big opening and the realisation of her childhood dream, Lisa admits having fears about money spent and time wasted. Wise words from her mother helped mute those concerns. ‘I realised that even if it did go wrong, it would always have been an experience. And I would have regretted not doing it more than I could ever regret doing it.’
Two years on and one flourishing business later, those fears must be difficult to conjure. Speaking counterfactually, Lisa supposes that had she not taken the leap, she’d probably still be working in bridal couture, although she would have had to cross the business-bridge at some point. ‘I’ve always had that drive. I never stayed in a job longer than a year before, because I was always looking for something that was mine.’
Speaking from her desk, surrounded by the hum of budding seamstresses and wearing a wardrobe of her own creation, it’s safe to say Lisa Comfort has achieved exactly that. n

concept currently gaining a foothold in London. ‘Although she is older than I am, a wonderful mentor of mine, Eileen Cavalier [CEO London College of Beauty Therapy], has the most extraordinary skin and the lack of fine lines around her eyes is striking. She

swears by an excellent eye cream and her appearance certainly suggests to me that she is onto something,’ explains Nancy when we chat. What we are doing right now, the act of swapping tips and tricks, is at the heart of Nancy’s new project: MyShowcase. It is an innovative concept in which ‘stylists’ host their own parties with friends and family, showcasing and selling specially-curated beauty booty. Think Space NK meets Avon.
The concept had been brewing in Nancy’s mind for several years. The Battersea-based mother has an extensive background in publishing and digital media and wanted to combine her experience launching websites for Conde Nast (Vogue.com and GQ.com), alongside championing some of the talented and enterprising women she meets on a
daily basis. ‘I used to run a business called Handbag.com. It was the number one fashion and beauty site in the UK in the noughties with 1.5 million women visiting the site every month,’ she explains. An impressive track record, and it goes on: ‘400,000 of these women chatted in our discussion areas about all sorts of things.’ It was on these forums that Nancy discovered that women between the ages of 25 and 55 talked regularly about a desire to launch their own business and find a flexible way to work, whilst bringing up a family or fulfilling other life goals.
We both agree that there are many obstacles in the way of pursuing this common dream and equally, smaller beauty brands find it incredibly hard to break into the marketplace. ‘I sat on the Beauty industry trade board Cosmetic Executive

Stylist Vicky Mansour (North London-based) discusses her introduction to MyShowcase and how it has shaped the next chapter in her life
How did you become involved in My Showcase? It was fate: I was talking to an old friend from work saying I wanted to start working again, but wasn’t sure where to start. I have two children, both under four years old. The friend is close with Kate Shapland, the brand director for MyShowcase, and recommended I give her a call. I have a background in beauty as I worked as PR Director at a leading agency for 10 years and once I learned about MyShowcase seemed like a match made in heaven.
What do you love about the brand now?The brilliant thing about my showcase is the team behind it, they supply you with all the materials you need to run your own beauty business successfully, without the stress.
What are your favourite beauty products?Aurelia Miracle Cleanser (which launched with MyShowcase) and T le Clerc Make-up, it’s all amazing but in particular the Azure Eyeliner and Paradis nail colour.

How does a party work?Once we have discussed what type of party the host would like, then it’s simply a case of getting a guest list together. I will send out a MyShowcase e-invite and manage all the responses. I arrive at the Showcase venue before the guests arrive to arrange a beautiful display of products and when they come through the door little encouragement is needed to get stuck in and open all the jars, pots and tubes.
How can those interested become a Stylist ?Becoming a stylist is easy, all you need to do is send an email to [email protected] and the team will contact you and send you information on the commission structure, training available and products. There is a lot of really useful information on the website.
What are some of your all-time favourite beauty products?I have recently discovered Antonia Burrell’s Cleansing Oil and Baby Face Cleansing Bar from MyShowcase, which I adore. Guinot’s Masque Essential is an incredible radiance pick-me up mask for the skin.
Women and I saw so much innovation, passion and great products from new beauty brands, yet they often found it challenging to build distribution in the traditional department stores up against larger global beauty players,’ she says. With these dilemmas prevalent in her mind, Nancy set the MyShowcase wheels in motion in 2011 with a few business partners, one of which is renowned beauty journalist and expert Kate Shapland. ‘MyShowcase is a new concept in beauty retail, with a passion for supporting female entrepreneurs in building or expanding their own beauty businesses,’ Nancy tells me. The business sells 20 plus multifarious brands, more often than not new to the High Street or, at least, not widely available on it. Stylists sell products at parties with their friends and the products can also be bought online.
If Nancy is all about having a good old chinwag and sharing recommendations, along with tricks of the trade, I wonder what is currently on her beauty shelf at home? ‘Some of the brands we stock are a little better known than others,’ the entrepreneur begins: ‘brands such as Balance Me, Blink, T Le Clerc and Neom. Others are lesser-known today: Beatitude, Ruth Mastenbroek and Antonia Burrell – to name just a few. My current addictions are Antonia Burrell (I adore her oil-based botanical cleanser), FACE Stockholm (crème blush in Tokyo, is so easy to apply to cheeks, eyes and even lips if I am feeling lazy or in a hurry) and Sage Los Angeles (roll-on fragrance oil in Turquiose).’ Take note all.
This fun and friendly business idea was born out of the digital age, but relies on the social links between women that remain unchanged for decades. ‘What is better than happening upon a beauty gem and having a trusted friend on hand to ask her unbiased opinion?’ asks Nancy. We quite agree, and with plans to roll out MyShowcase across the country, its reach could go global. ‘We have aspirations to take the business into every community in the UK and potentially beyond our shores too, creating hundreds of successful female-led businesses along the way.’ Here here, I chant. n

There is quite simply no better location for my interview with Susan Hanage a.k.a. Annabel, founder of Nappy Valley Net, than Gail’s
on Northcote Road. We are surrounded by parents with their adorable eager-eyed youngsters, joyfully catching up with friends, while munching on tasty cupcakes and drinking caffè lattes. The environment in which we find ourselves is a very literal representation of the business that Susan has managed to foster with her online forum for parents. Just as the women around us offload their problems and discuss goals and achievements, subscribers to Nappy Valley Net are welcomed into a very special family, which offers advice and builds conversation on topics relevant to a time that is, at its core, quite bewildering: parenthood.
The average woman uses 20,000 words in a day, compared with her male counterpart who utters just 7,000. New research by Louann Brizendine, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, claims that women just feel the desire to talk more. Her new book The Female Brain is currently a US bestseller. With this fact lodged firmly in my mind, surrounded by mothers happily chatting away, I tend to agree – as would my guest and interviewee. She has made a successful business out of open, online conversation. ‘My family are up north, as is my husband’s family and I think everyone needs someone that they can go to for advice, whether that be for the light and fluffy topics or for the harder more complicated issues,’ begins Susan when I ask her why she set up Nappy Valley Net.
Her background in the business-side of publishing has provided her with more than enough knowledge to launch the website. ‘I spent 20 years in publishing,’ Susan tells me. ‘I was a Publishing Director, heading up the women’s division at Dennis Publishing and then the consumer electronics division at Haymarket.’ The budding website editor found her work taxing with two young children and decided to leave the corporate world for a road less travelled by mothers, that of the entrepreneur.
After stumbling upon The East Dulwich Forum and some intriguing research detailing the rising number of people choosing to raise their young families in London, rather than moving to the countryside, Susan began work on her own concept for an online forum tailored to parents. With unbridled ambition, she launched. ‘I just thought that’s it, I am going to have a go. I went with a Facebook-style model to get it out there,’ Susan says. As she astutely points out, you can spend millions of pounds on a website, but it doesn’t necessarily guarantee you results. Her plan was to invest as she went along and fix issues as they arose.
The very first iteration of Nappy Valley Net, ‘didn’t have to be the Rolls-Royce of local websites, but it was professional and at its heart it had a ‘cottage’ element,’ explains Susan. This fact has served the website well, as legions of mums are drawn to its pages praising its foolproof usability. It’s made by a mum for mums,’ chirps Susan. The website had over 90,000 visits last month, the Battersea-based mother tells me, with visitors looking at three million pages.
Never one to rest on her laurels, the local lady who originally hails from the north is constantly working to develop the site. ‘We’ve grown-up as a website, but obviously we have innovated.’ The site has launched a highly successful calendar section, which allows users to plan their day by a selection of variables, such as type of activity and age of the child to entertain. Excitingly, Susan has also launched a sister site, Annabel’s Arcade, for buying and selling items, and also an entirely new Richmond-based Nappy Valley Net forum. All developments are made with mums in mind; Susan feels it is key to listen to her audience to provide the very best local service. Watch this space as Nappy Valley Net could be coming to a computer near you, with at least two more areas planned within the next 12 months.
I comment that the website has become so much more than just a forum, some of the posts are incredibly emotive and
heartwrenching, a fact that Susan knows all too well. ‘That sort of thing is really touching to me,’ she says. ‘We have regular meet-ups and my whole bottom line for Nappy Valley Net is that mums must be able to help each other.’ The next meeting will be at Scoffers and this friendly community is always ready to welcome new members with open arms.
I wonder if there is much work moderating the posts on Susan’s part? ‘Obviously school discussions tend to be quite a touchy subject. Lots of the stuff on the site is light-hearted and feel-good, “where can I get an entertainer or a birthday cake?” but actually, when it comes to the education of your children, people feel that everyone should have a good opportunity at a fantastic school and not everybody does,’ she responds. However, on the whole Susan rarely needs to interject. Posters are aware that thanks to the local aspect of the site, the person to whom you are writing online, could be a neighbour or someone that you could meet on the school run.
Susan has achieved what many of us only dream of. Able to pick up the kids at 3.30pm and work her own hours (although she does spend a lot of time on the site, christening it her third baby), she has left the corporate world behind for an advantageous flexible lifestyle. ‘I still manage to go and see my kids play sports and I am not hanging my coat on the back of the chair at work when I am actually at a school play,’ she enthuses. It seems you really can have it all.
Uncertain about bringing children up in London at first, even I want to join the supportive community of Nappy Valley Netters. Susan states, matter-of-factly: ‘I don’t drive and I just think London is the most brilliant place to bring up children. At the end of every road there is either a childcare solution, a play centre or there is a school. There are also buses, tubes and trains. What more could you want?’ n

After reading lots of the posts about who has been offered what schools in the area, it has got me thinking. We will be going through the process next year so I thought I would do a bit of research.
We live ‘in between the commons’ and would be ever so grateful if anyone who lives the Clapham (south end of Canford Road, Muncaster Road, Alfriston Road, Culmstock Road, Winsham Grove area) could let me know what local state schools they were offered. I assume we are being realistic that Honeywell and Belleville are out of our reach? From reading the posts, it sounds like Falconbrook and Alderbrook were offered to families close to us – does anyone have any thoughts about those schools?

We’re Wakehurst Road, very close to Muncaster Road and Canford Road (400 metres from Belleville). We were offered Falconbrook Primary, which is near York Road, not realistic walking difference. We are 25th on Belleville waiting list and in the 70s on Honeywell.

Shortage of excellent school places remains the real issue. The council are consulting on increasing the capacity of six-seven of the primary schools in Wandsworth that have enough space to expand... However some very selfish parents at these schools are campaigning against expansion. If these schools were forced to expand (the funds are provided by central Government), they could have the space to provide the services offered by Belleville and Honeywell.

We applied for a place for Reception for our child. We hoped to get a place in a local school; we live just four minutes away from Honeywell. Now we’re on the waiting list, but with no real chance to get in. The most shocking thing is that the only public school they can offer us a place for is in Steward Road. It will take us 50 minutes with London Transport to get there! I just can’t believe that they expect families to travel this far to go to primary school... I fully understand that families with more than one child should have the opportunity to bring their children to the same school, but if they no longer live in this area, it’s just unfair to take the places from the local living families. That also means more traffic around the school, which makes crossing more dangerous.

I’m so sorry to hear you are in this situation. I would have thought that living four minutes from Honeywell would eventually get you a place there from the waiting list, so perhaps all hope is not lost.
I agree with you about the danger of having too many families drive to Honeywell and Belleville. I can see why they would want to keep families together, but the problem is escalating and if it is true that a high number of families move out once their first child has a place, then surely the community feel of the school will also be eroded.

Hi,
I am aware of so many people in your situation, it is terrible. We live on Berber Road, and luckily have a place at Belleville this year. However, the houses either side of us are rented, and each year are generally occupied by families wanting to get their children into Belleville. As soon as they secure a place, they move or return to their homes elsewhere, outside the catchment area. The schools and council need to find a way to stop people manipulating the entrance system.

The schoolThe co-educational school takes children from Reception class (age four) to Year 6 (age 11) and they benefit from the regular routine of five full days from 8.30am to 4pm. There are also a range of exciting and varied after-school clubs to attend, if the child should wish. White House Preparatory also offers After School Care until 6.00pm each evening.
The preparatoryPupils in the preparatory classes (Key Stage 1, Years 1 and 2) are aged between seven and eleven. Class teachers are supported by qualified teaching assistants and each child receives considerable individual attention. The Tea Time Homework Club is also available every afternoon until 6pm and serves ‘high tea,’ consisting of freshly-made soups, vegetable wraps, fruit and yoghurts. All classes are led by their own class teacher; however, the school also offers teaching by specialist subject teachers in well-equipped classrooms as well. The class teacher is responsible for each child’s academic and pastoral welfare.
Parents and carersParents are kept up to date with their children’s educational and social development through twice-yearly reports and in-depth individual meetings with form staff are arranged once a term. There are two open mornings and an open evening for parents to view their children’s work. In addition there are musical evenings, art exhibitions, sports, drama and charity events, which parents are encouraged to attend. Mrs Davies recalls an incredibly popular art exhibition showcasing the pupils’ artistic talents; White Space was hosted last year and raised over £600. She also explains that children are inspired by guest speakers. Children’s author Rob Lloyd Jones most recently graced the preparatory department with a visit and spoke enthusiastically about writing and meeting his childhood hero, Roald Dahl.
The educational landscape‘The best schools are of no one type,’ explains the Headmistress. ‘They simply are the best because they are places where children feel welcome and know that the teachers and staff care about them.’ Although there is pressure to perform, the staff works hard to foster an atmosphere in which young people will excel and want to achieve. ‘To teach effectively staff must understand that children’s’ abilities and needs are different. The teaching and interaction with children must always reflect the needs of each individual,’ says Mrs Davies. Inspiring young minds.Variety is the spice of educational life and The White House Preparatory School ensure that there is plenty of variety built into the academic timetable. Subjects range from Art & Design Technology, French, ICT, Music and Sport. After-school clubs include: athletics, chess, drama, choir, cookery, swimming, pottery, golf, a range of sports and karate. A popular activity is the electric car club, which students can join from Year 4. Each summer the car is raced against 50 or more other teams at Goodwood Racing circuit in West Sussex. New Homes iN wANdswortHDerelict sites on Patmore Estate, Nine Elms, are set to take on a new guise, under exciting plans by Wandsworth Council to improve the home owning prospects for local residents. A former garage block on Parvin Street and a deserted education centre on Thessaly Road are to become the locale of 35 new homes, all of which will be available in the council’s unique new home ownership scheme. Under the scheme, applicants keen to buy property may be eligible for a repayable interest free equity loan, which would enable them to buy family-sized homes for much lower than the open market rate. The local community will be offered first refusal on the scheme, before the houses are offered to the rest of Wandsworth’s residents.

PROPERTY WATCH
Kingsway Square is an award winning residential development in Battersea, South West London. The development was undertaken by St James Homes and completed four-and-a-half-years ago. The listed building, which was formerly Westminster College, underwent huge refurbishment and a new section was added to the rear. It has become a very popular development in the area for owner occupiers, as well as for buy-to let investors. One of the reasons for its popularity is that the development boasts excellent services for luxury living, including secure underground parking, a communal roof terrace and a concierge service. Kingsway Square is located just a stone’s throw from Battersea Park, which provides excellent facilities including a gym, rowing lake and children’s playgrounds.
The location of Kingsway Square is highly sought-after, with excellent transport links to central London and the City via trains and bus links. Battersea Park BR and Queenstown Road BR are just a short distance away and a short and pleasant walk over Chelsea Bridge will bring you to the King’s Road, with its plentiful shops, bars and restaurants.

For many years Elsynge Road, SW18 has been billed as having been purposely built for the Great Exhibition of 1851. This is not too hard to
believe as there are so many different property styles in this relatively short road. Originally named Park Road, the street does look like an exhibition
of Victorian splendour.
If, indeed, the road was part of the exhibition, it would have been under the control of the Estate of Commissioners. Prince Albert was a dominant figure on the Commission, until his death in December 1861. A memorandum by
the Prince left no doubt of his opinion that surplus funds from the exhibition should be used to buy land west of the Exhibition site and south of Kensington Road. There, he believed, some 30 acres could be bought for £50,000. There is, however, no mention of Battersea in his memorandum, which at that time was
home to 10,500 people, mainly all manual workers.
When travel writer Paul Theroux moved into Elsynge Road in 1975, he found the road in decline: it was a bit ‘shabby.’ He paid £32,000 for his four-storey house, a striking difference to current property prices on
the road, which range from £1.2 million to £4 million. Since that time, residents have one-by-one modernised their properties, bringing the road
back to its former glory. Notable occupants in recent years are Johnny Vaughn (TV and radio presenter) and Mark Owen (Take That). Whatever the truth,
Elsynge Road is without a doubt majestic and it stands out in the area. I find the history of Battersea and Clapham Junction quite fascinating and it is why I
have remained in agency here for over 24 years.

Can you introduce us to Tate Residential and what services you offer?Tate Residential Ltd was incorporated in May 2000 and we opened this office on Battersea Park Road in 2003. Tate Residential let and manage in excess of 120 properties with rental values from £200 to £2,000 per week. What do you see the highest demand for in this area: sales or lettings?Sales, in Battersea. This is a buzz area, an area in transition. On the surface the regeneration is not all visible, but if you look deeper, the building sites are popping up and the infrastructure is going in. Investors are attracted to south west London because they want to see above average growth with a good solid rental yield.
How successful is the lettings market currently?Tate landlords, on an average, enjoy exceptionally low vacant periods, three vacant days for 2012/13. We build strong working relationships with all of our landlords and enjoy working with people that we trust and respect.
How important are digital mediums in today’s market?They are critical. We were in the top ten Google ‘without places’ searches in May and our website is on target to recieve more than 100,000 visits a month, a figure which matches multi office estate agents’ websites. We also publish Tate’s Tips online which guide landlords and house hunters on all manner of topics relating to property: we want to reach out to people.
What makes Battersea special? Even without the tube stations due to be built in this area, there are still fantastic bus and rail links to the City and West End. It’s an area that people forgot, everyone moved to Clapham and beyond. There is a wonderful diversity of residents right across the board, from the blue-collar worker to the boardroom director, all are in the same melting pot.
Which developments are you watching closely?The Power Station was first commissioned in the late 1930s, built as a temporary structure with a design life of 40 years. At the time people hated it as it chucked pollutants into the air. Now it is an iconic building and people will not ever let it go, rightly so we think, but we do have to be realistic about how it will be developed sustainably.

How do you see Battersea changing over the coming years?I don’t think it’s going to change hugely; it’s a very happy, settled, comfortable area in its own right. I think Battersea plays its affluence down a little bit and I quite like that; it’s a little bit more discreet and not as showy.
What are you seeing in terms of changes people are making to their properties in this area? Currently, the trend is to create as much living space as possible. So you need to make the property work for you, not only lifestyle-wise, but also in terms of the investment. I think one of the reasons that basements have become so popular is that these houses are traditionally very top heavy. You’ve got a big kitchen and sitting room, and then you’ve got five bedrooms upstairs. Basements are so popular because they give you extra living space. The local market has gone up 10 per cent this year. We said it would go up nine, so that’s quite an accurate forecast
What are the key things to remember when house hunting?When you look at buying a house there are three things people want: a fantastic property, in a great location, at an absolute bargain price (oh, and they want to be able to sell it for a fortune). Sadly it just doesn’t work that way. You’re trying to buy a house or flat in the most competitive property market in the world, so believe me, you cannot have the best house, in the nicest street, at half the price. So it’s always about creating a compromise.
Are you finding a lot more landlords investing in the area?Lettings in Prime Central London is quite hard work at the moment because you’ve got landlords that don’t need to let or sell. They can afford their property to be empty because they’re seeing their investment grow and they can write off some of their yield because of this capital growth. South of the river the landlords aren’t quite as affluent and they are much more involved in their properties. Battersea is now ‘on the map’ and rental prices have increased in this area as it is deemed somewhere that people are very happy to live. South of the river has definitely changed in that respect. To illustrate this point, consider that renting in Notting Hill is now about the same price as renting something in Battersea Park. So yes, landlords are investing.
What does Douglas & Gordon have that other agencies do not? As an agency, we have a personality. I think all of our staff have character and I believe that people genuinely enjoy working with us, either as a purchaser or a vendor, because we enjoy our jobs. We have a huge amount of repeat business because of this. All of our staff undertake the NFOPP (NAEA) award exams so within a year of working for us you have to be fully qualified. n
