27 Championship Holes…A “Must Play!!”

000481253r1-080

EXECUTIVES from Page 8The Worldʼs Longest Golf Course is the

International Golf Club in Massachusetts, along par 77, 8325-yards, from the tiger tees.

The Worldʼs Highest Golf Course is theTactu Golf Club in Morococha, Peru, which sits14,335 feet above sea level at its lowest point.

The Longest Hole in the World is the 7thhole (par 7) of the Sano Course at the SatsukiGolf Club in Japan. It measures a long 909yards.

The Worldʼs Largest Bunker is Hellʼs HalfAcre on the 585-yard 7th hole of the Pine ValleyCourse in New Jersey.

The Worldʼs Largest Green is that of the695-yard, 5th hole, a par 6 at the InternationalGolf Club in Massachusetts, with an area inexcess of 28,000 square feet.

When the golfer feels the ball makeimpact with the driver face, the ball hasalready been hit and is actually 14 inchesaway on its trip down the fairway. No matterhow fast you may think the bodyʼs neurons andbrain can process information, the impactbetween the driver and the ball is much faster! What this means also is that if you have a golferwho likes to feel the ball on the face to ʻwork theball,ʼ that golfer better move quick!

Balls travel significantly farther on hotdays. The ball velocity, launch angle and back-spin amount will NOT change as temperatureincreases or decreases, but a golfer with a100mph swing speed will carry the driver eightyards longer for each increase in air tempera-ture of 25°F.

Changing a driverʼs face angle 1 degreechanges shot direction by 5 yards. At acarry distance of 200 yards and all otherswing factors being equal, changing a dri-verʼs face angle by 1 degree results in aside-to-side change in shot direction of fiveyards. This is the main reason face angle issuch a powerful fitting aid for accuracy improve-ment.

There is no such thing as over spin on agolf ball at the moment of impact. Evenwhen using a putter, the ball leaves the club-face with some backspin. Only when the ballsettles on the ground and begins rolling will thebackspin reverse and turn into over spin.

The driver swing speed of an averagelady golfer is 62mph; 96mph for an averageLPGA professional; 84mph for an averagemale golfer; 108mph for an average PGATour player; 130mph for Tiger Woods; 148-

152mph for a national long drive champion. The next time you hear someone say profes-sional golfers are not athletes, clue them in onthis. 1 mph of swing speed increase = 1.5mphof ball velocity increase = 3 yards of carry dis-tance increase.

Golf buffs may cry “Sacrilege!”, butthereʼs an alternative version of the game inexistence. Invented in 1989, Golfcross uses bigsuspended nets instead of holes, and the ballsare oval – like golf balls crossed with eggs. There are dedicated courses from New Zealandto the UK, if youʼre feeling adventurous.

Thereʼs a long-standing myth that theword “golf” is an acronym of Gentlemen Only,Ladies Forbidden. Which is amusing, but unfor-tunately complete rubbish. The word actuallystems from original 15th Century spellings thatincluded “gouf”, “goulf”, “goiff” and “gouff” (inde-cisive lot, 15th Century Scots).

Golf was actually outlawed in Scotlandin 1457. James II was the killjoy behind the ban– he was preparing for an English invasion andwanted his citizens to concentrate on usefulhobbies like archery. The ban was eventuallylifted quite some time later, in 1502.

Ever wondered where the golfing term“birdie” comes from? It seems we have anAmerican named Ab Smith to thank. Whilestriding around a course in 1899, he playedwhat he described as a “bird of a shot”, whichbecame “birdie” over time. (“Bird” was 19thAmerican slang for anything really, really good.Kind of like “cool” is for us.)

Dormie, the golf jargon word referring to

a player decisively leading a game, comes from“dormir”, a word of shared French and Latin ori-gin which means “to sleep”. In other words, theplayerʼs so far in front he can afford to sleep.

There are 336 dimples on a regulation golfball.

The longest putt in history was measuredat 140 feet and 2 3/4 inches on the 18th hole atSt. Andrewʼs golf course. It was shot by BobCook on October 1, 1976.

There are approximately 11,000 golfcourses in North America.

There are more than 50 million golfers inthe world.

Americans spend more than $600 millionon golf balls every year.

OFF AND RUNNING IN THE MEN’S REGULAR DIVISION

Tyler Whiting ofAlexandria has hardlygolfed this summer. He’sbeen down in Alabama com-pleting Air Force officertraining.

In fact, the 23-year-oldhadn’t even picked up aclub until two weeks agobut his golf game is still fly-ing high.

Whiting, the 2008Resorters Men’s Divisionchampion, fired a 67 during

qualifying to earn medalisthonors.

He did it with threebirdies on the front nine, beginning with a dazzling50-foot putt from the bot-tom of the green on No. 3.Two other early birdies, onNos. 6 and 9, were offset byonly one miscue, a bogey onNo. 8, to put him 2-under atthe turn.

Whiting played the backnine just as consistently, carding three birdies onNos. 14, 15 and 18 andshooting nothing but parson the rest of the holes.

As good as his 5-underpar qualifying round was,he’s done better. He’s shot a66 in the Resorters before.

Whiting said he was hit-

ting the ball straight off thedriver but it was his puttingthat made the difference.

Whiting has two brothersgolfing in this year’sResorters – an occasion thathasn’t happened in at leasta decade, he said. Derrickalso qualified for the cham-pionship bracket with a 74while Jason’s qualifyinground of 80 placed him inthe third flight.

Whiting’s 67 was one offlast year’s pace, a 66 shot byanother Alexandrian, BryceHanstad, the 2007 champi-on in the division, who waseliminated in last year’squarterfinals.

PAST MEDALISTS

Page 20: Resorters Golf Tournament 08/04/2010

A defending championhas never had as easy ofa time advancing pastthe first round of matchplay as Chaska’s JonEmpanger did yesterdayafternoon.

The six-time champi-on (five executive titles, one senior title) wasslated to play AppleValley’s ToddMcNamara in the firstgroup to tee off at noon. The only problem wasMcNamara nevershowed up. Empangerused the day as anotherpractice round as headvanced to the secondday by forfeit.

That was just part ofan exciting first day ofmatch play in the SeniorDivision. Three of the 16matches were not decid-ed until the 18th, andthree more needing

extra holes to decide awinner. Gene Seashoreof Lakewood Ranch,Florida and two-timeResorters champion JoeKlick locked up in thelongest of those as

Seashore edged Klick in20 holes.

The Senior Divisionwill kick off its action at1:12 this afternoon fromthe first tee.

Kiger def. Tessmer, 19 holes

This back-and-forthbattle betweenAlexandria’s BurkeKiger and Hood River,Oregon’s Steve Tessmerwasn’t decided untilKiger finally putTessmer away on the19th hole.

Kiger built a one-holeadvantage after threewith a birdie. That wasthe first of threestraight holes he tookbefore Tessmer got oneback with a birdie on thepar-five sixth.

The two-hole lead forKiger after that was thebiggest lead he wouldhold for the rest of theday. Tessmer stuck withhim with a par win onNo. 9 to head into theturn down by just one.

It didn’t take him longto even things up on theback. His par on No. 10was good for a win afterKiger doubled. Theyhalved the next twoholes before Kiger brokethrough again with apar win on No. 13.Tessmer got that backwith a par win of hisown on 15. The twohalved the remainingthree holes in regulationbefore Kiger lived toplay another day bywinning the first playoffhole.

Ledebuhr def.Hanson,

3-2Roger Ledebuhr of

Eden Prairie used threestrong holes on the backto overcomeAlexandria’s BradHanson in what was avery close match up tothat point.

Neither player led by

more than one hole untilLedebuhr parred no. 15to go up by two withthree to play. He thenbirdied No. 16 to end thematch.

He stayed closeenough on the front tomake the charge on theback. Hanson led by onegoing into the turn, butLedebuhr won Nos. 10and 11 to take his firstlead of the day. Hansonnever led again asLedebuhr finishedstrong to finish him off.

Zinn def.Schenkelberg, 1-upByron Zinn of

Spicewood, Texas camea long ways to play inthe Resorters and hesurvived a close matchagainst Brooklyn Park’sAl Schenkelberg to liveto play another day.

Neither player led bymore than one hole afterNo. 6. The two wentback-and-forth on theback, with Schenkelbergparring No. 11 beforeZinn did the same onNo. 12 to move back toone up. Again,Schenkelberg parredNo. 14 for a win beforeZinn answered rightback with a par win on15. The proved to beenough as both playersbogeyed No. 16 beforeparring Nos. 17 and 18.

Blanchard def.Brabant, 3-2

Burnsville residentNorty Blanchard took afour-hole lead overMaple Lake’s BobBrabant through thefirst six holes and neverlooked back in a 3-2 winon Tuesday afternoon.

Blanchard was steadyafter bogeying the firsthole as he got par wins

on Nos. 2 and 4 beforeback-to-back birdies onfive and six gave him anice cushion.

Brabant cut that leadto three with a birdie onNo. 9, but Blanchardwas just too much downthe stretch. He birdiedNos. 10 and 14 before abogey on No. 16 wasgood enough tie the holeand take the match withtwo left to play.

Matanich def.Strassburg, 19 holesMark Matanich of

Lake City used a birdieon the first playoff holeto put away Clear Lake’sAl Strassburg in a closematch.

Matanich birdied thefirst two holes on theback to go two up afterthe two were even at theturn. The two bogeyedthe next two holesbefore Strassburg brokethrough with a birdie onthe par-five 14th. Hethen used a par win on16 to even things upwith two to go. A bogeyand a par by bothbrought them into extraholes, where Strassburgtook care of businessearly to secure the win.

Mehesan def. Pint,5-4

Alexandria’s DonMehesan turned anearly one-hole deficitinto a two-hole lead bythe turn.

He never looked backfrom there as he fin-ished off BrooklynPark’s Allan Pint with abirdie on the 14th. Pintstruggled to get much ofanything going on theday as three doubles

and a triple accounted forwins on three holes forMehesan.

Arnold def. Kulow, 4-3Jim Arnold of Plymouth

overcame a rough patch inthe middle of the front nineto take down Marshall’s TimKulow through 15.

Kulow turned a two-holedeficit into a one-hole leadwith three straight wins onNos. 5, 6 and 7. Arnoldbogeyed all three of thoseholes but played eventhrough six holes on the backto take back control of thematch. His par wins on Nos.14 and 15 gave him the victo-ry.

Pederson def. Golden, 4-3

Haymarket, Virginia’s JeffPederson used two birdiesand a par on the back to pickup wins and secure a 4-3 vic-tory over Alexandria’s MikeGolden.

Pederson led by at leasttwo through the back afterwinning Nos. 7 and 8 withpars. Golden took just onehole after that, a par win onNo. 14, as he shot five overthrough seven holes after theturn.

Fluegel def. Hartmann,3-2

Alexandria attorney MikeFluegel made his case afterthe 7th hole: No more winsfor his opponent, MikeHartmann of Red Wing.

Fluegel took the first leadwith a birdie on No. 2 butHartmann countered with a

par win on the next hole.Fluegel got back in front

with another birdie win onNo. 6, only to drop the nexthole to Hartmann’s par.

That’s when Fluegel laiddown the law. He won Nos. 8and 9 and with pars, matched Hartmann’s pars onthe next four holes and thenstruck for a birdie on No. 14to go 3-up.

Both golfers shot nothingbut pars on the next twoholes. Case closed – a 3-2 winfor Fluegel.

Mattson def. Dibble, 7-6A fast start powered Greg

Mattson of Becker to a quickwin over L. Thomas Dibble ofBloomington.

Mattson won the first holewith a birdie and his pars onthe next four holes put himcomfortably out front, 5-up.

Dibble matched Mattson’spar on No. 6 to stop thebleeding but couldn’t do anybetter than pars on the nextthree holes to remain trailingby five at the turn.

Mattson didn’t dilly-dally.He won Nos. 10 and 12 withpar, birdie to close out thematch, 7-6.Falls def. McFarlane, 1-up

Bob Falls of Edina nevertrailed in his match againstAlexandria’s DaveMcFarlane but it still tookhim 18 grueling holes to icethe win.

Falls won No. 1 with birdiebut McFarlane answeredwith a birdie win on the nexthole.

Falls came right back witha par win on No. 3 and went2-up with a par win on No. 4.

McFarlane cut into thelead with a par win on thepar-3 No. 7 but Falls’ bogeywas good enough to take the9th hole, putting him 2-up atthe turn.

McFarlane again drew towithin one with a par win onNo. 10 but his bogey on No.12 dropped him two back.

The rollercoaster matchcontinued with McFarlanewinning No. 13 with par andFalls taking No. 14 with par.

The next two holes werestalemates and thenMcFarlane forced anotherhole with a par on No. 17 todraw within one.

The match ended in bogeyson the 18th green.

Flesch def. Lende, 1-upMike Flesch of Neenah,

Wisconsin held off a late flur-ry from Roy Lende ofLivingston, Montana to claima 1-up win.

Lende jumped out to theearly lead with wins on Nos.1 and 3. Flesch didn’t cave in,however, and lashed backwith three straight par winson Nos. 4, 5 and 6 to steal thelead.

He padded his advantageto two with a par win on No.8 but Lende took No. 9 totrail by just one at the turn.

Flesch’s pars were goodenough to win the next twoholes and, up by three, hewas poised for a quick win.

But Lende fought back. He

won Nos. 12, 14 and 15 todeadlock the match.

Flesch earned a key parwin on No. 16 to regain thelead and it held when bothgolfers parred the final twoholes.Petersen def. Anderson,

All square at the turn,Petersen prevailed on theback nine. He won No. 10with birdie, matchedAnderson stroke for strokeon the next four holes andthen went 2-up with a parwin on No. 15.

Petersen closed out thematch in a style – a birdiewin on No. 16 that gave hima 3-2 victory.

Seashore def. Klick, 20 holes

Seashore almost saw afour-hole lead after 11 disap-pear as Klick made a latecharge to force extra holes.

Seashore was 3-up withthree left to play when heran into a little trouble. Hebogeyed Nos. 16 and 18 andsandwiched a par betweenthem on 17. That opened thedoor for Klick, and he tookadvantage, parring Nos. 16and 18, while birdying the

par-3 17th. That completed the come-

back as Seashore was forcedto win it in extras. After bothmen parred the first extrahole, Seashore put Klickaway on the 20th hole toadvance.

Both golfers played solidgolf. Seashore shot even parfor the day while Klick was2-over.Vipond def. Johnson, 5-4
