A horrible race has attacked Jerusalem. They have destroyed the churches of
God. Jerusalem is now the prisoner of the enemies of Jesus Christ. These people
dont even know how to pray to God.
I know that you have heard about the wild attacks of the Muslims against the
Christian churches. They have taken over the Holy City of Jerusalem.
All who die in battle against the pagans shall have immediate remission
(forgiveness) of sins.
All people of whatever rank, foot-soldiers and knights, poor and rich, carry aid
promptly to those Christians and to destroy that vile race from the lands of our
friends. Christ commands it.
Speeches by Pope Urban II from the 1090s

The Holy City of Jerusalem was besieged by the infidels on September 20, 1187.
It was surrounded on every side by unbelievers . Arrows fell like raindrops. The
cruellest of tyrants [Saladin, the Muslim general] arrayed up to ten thousandarmed knights with bows and lances on horseback. He stationed another ten
thousand or more men armed to the teeth with bows for shooting arrows,
under cover of shields. He kept the rest with himself around the [siege] engines.
From The Capture of the Holy Land by Saladin, by an anonymous medieval crusader.

"I am the prince of those who follow the religion of Jesus Christ, as you are of
those who obey the laws of Muhammad. Your power inspires me with no fear.
How should it? I who make the Muslims in Spain tremble! I have loaded their
women and children with chains. The soldiers who march under my standards
cover the plains. You have but one method to avoid [destruction]. Receive
priests, who will teach you the Christian religion; otherwise I will pursue you
everywhere, and God shall decide."
Letter from King Louis ofFrance to Nedjim Eddin, Sultan of Egypt, 1249.

"I have received your letter. It is filled with menaces, and you make a boast of
the great number of your soldiers. No one has ever attacked us without feeling
our superiority. Recollect the conquests we have made from the Christians ...
Recall to your mind that passage of the Koran, which says, 'Those who make
war unjustly shall perish'. God protects the just; and we have no doubt of his
protection [against] your arrogant designs.
Reply by Nedjim Eddin, Sultan of Egypt, to King Louis ofFrance, 1249.

In the 640th year of the Hegira [1243 AD], the Franks surprised the town of
Napoulous on a Friday, and made slaves of the inhabitants, after they had
plundered them of all they had, and committed all sorts of cruelties.
The infidel Franks took possession of these towns [including Jerusalem] and
instantly fortified all the castles... They expelled Muslims from the mosque Aksa[in Jerusalem], made a church of it, and hung bells in the minaret.
Makrisi, 14th
century Arab historian.
