RIGORAvon High School is among the most competitive high schools in the State of Connecticut.
Our community prides itself on its level of scholarship and involvement in co-curricular programs and activities. Nearly 80% of the student body participates in athletics, with a strong record of advancement to conference and state championships. Fine and Performing Arts thrive at Avon High School. More than half of the student population participates in choral, instrumental, and art competitions. Avon’s students participate in a broad range of special interest and service-focused clubs and activities.
RESULTSThe student population of just under one thousand, consistently ranks among the most competitive high schools at both the state and national levels. A rigorous curriculum, engaged and caring students, and an invested learning community fully prepare Avon High School graduates to be leaders in their future endeavors.

Avon High School remains among the highest scoring districts statewide on the SAT.
We were the 7th highest-scoring district for SAT comparative data in 2020.
While most Avon High School students are required to take the SAT exam, participation in the grown over the last 5 years.

Course Level Descriptions: Students of Avon High School have the opportunity to pursue a subject as deeply as their individual imagination, initiative, and intellectual ability permits. Subjects are offered at the following levels of pace and challenge.
Most CompetitiveAvon High School offers several avenues for students to receive a College Experience (CE) while still in high school: Advanced Placement (AP), University of Connecticut Early College Experience (ECE), and Tunxis Community College.
Early College Experience (ECE): In partnership with the University of Connecticut (UConn), these courses follow the University syllabi, and require our faculty to serve as adjunct members, allowing students to earn both college and high school credits. Established in 1955, UConn ECE is the nation's longest-running accredited dual enrollment program.
Advanced Placement (AP): College level offerings follow a nationally approved course of study. These classes encourage dialogue and debate by providing learning opportunities, which require the highest level of rigor and self-motivation.
Tunxis Community College (CE): Students are exposed to college level content that has a breadth and depth beyond the honors level. The level of rigor is equivalent to the same course at Tunxis Community College.
Very CompetitiveHonors (H): Rigorous College Preparatory courses demanding strong writing skills, complex problem-solving across disciplines, and an ability to work independently.
CompetitiveCollege Preparatory (CP): Challenging curriculum requiring sound scholarship, excellent study skills, and higher-order thinking. These courses are designed to prepare students for their future college coursework.
OF NOTE:• Due to the impacts of COVID-19, a pass/fail option was made available for the spring 2020 semester.• Electives are included in the weighted GPA.• Students have the opportunity to contract for honors designation for all electives.• Honors, and College Experience courses have open enrollment.• All seniors are required to complete a Capstone project. Students create an inquiry-based project and presentation.
The Capstone course is not included in the student's GPA and is graded on a Pass/Fail basis.• Only courses taken at Avon High School or with an affiliate program are calculated in the weighted GPA.• Affiliated programs include The Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts (GHAA) and Virtual High School (VHS).• Students may also earn credit through community service, internship, independent study, and as a teaching assistant.
