Respiratory System

By: Amanda Shaeffer & Michaela Taffe

Primary Function: supply oxygen to all parts of the body.

Inhaling oxygen rich air and exhaling air filled with carbon dioxid.

Function of Respiratory System

1. Breath in air through mouth and nose-wet and warm air so it will not irritate lungs

2. Travels through voice box, windpipe andbronchial to the lungs - Cillia will catch germs and particles

making us sneeze or cough 3. The oxygen will enter the blood vessels

- Carry the oxygen throughout the body- Carry the carbon dioxid back to lungs

How it Works

● Lungs: Take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide.○ Red blood cells collect oxygen and carry into parts of body.

■ Bring back carbon dioxide.

● Alveoli: Exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide.○ Tiny sacs found in lungs.

● Trachea: Filters the air that is inhaled.● Bronchi: Brings air to lungs.

○ Two tubes that branch off trachea.

● Diaphragm: Muscles at the bottom of lungs. ○ Controls breathing.○ Expands to force air out.○ Flattens out when air is taken in.

Organs and Functions

● Is a chronic lung diseasethe inflames and narrowsthe airways.

● Causes wheezing, chest tightening, shortness of breath, and coughing

● Causes:Allergens, tobacco smoke, environmental factors, stress, or from a genetic reason.

Asthma

In healthy people, both their airways and sacs are springy and elastic. In COPD, airways and air sacs are floppy and loose shape. ● Makes it hard to breathe. ● Coughing up mucus is the first sign of COPD. ● Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are common COPD's.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
