tomeDearRebecca,Thankyouforcontactingmeregardingfederalfundingforscienceandtechnologyresearch.Asalways,Ivalueyourinputonthisissueandappreciatehearingfromyou.Likeyou,Iamastrongadvocateforadvancingscienceandtechnologyprograms.Thesedisciplinespromoteinnovationandhelpournationcompeteintheglobaleconomy.ContributionsbytheNationalScienceFoundation(NSF),theDepartmentofEnergysOfficeofScience,theNationalInstitutesofHealth(NIH),andtheNationalInstituteofStandardsandTechnologyhavebeeninstrumentalinkeepingtheUnitedStatesonthecuttingedgeofscientificresearchanddevelopment.InnovationhasbuiltnewindustriesandtechnologyandhasbeenaneconomicdriverinMassachusetts.OnJanuary31,2011,IjoinedwithSenatorAmyKlobuchar(D-MN)tointroduc
etheInnovateAmericaAct(S.239).Ourbillhelpsturnscienceandtechnologyfundingintoinnovativecompaniesthroughresearchanddevelopmenttaxcredits,streamliningregulatorychallengesforemployers,andencouraginguniversitiestomakeavailableundergraduateresearchopportunities.SeveralofmySenatecolleagueshavealreadycosponsoredS.239andIamadvocatingforitsswiftpassage.ThePresidentsbudgetrequestforfiscalyear2013includes$7.373billionfortheNSF;$30.86billionfortheNIH;$140.8billionintotalresearchfunding,and$80milliondedicatedtopreparing100,000newteachersinthefieldsofscience,technology,educationandmathematicsoverthenextdecade.ThePresidentsbudgetproposalisastartingpointforCongressaswebeginourannualbudgetandappropriationsprocess.IamcommittedtoworkingwithmySenatecolleaguest
