PRODUCT ANALYSIS
Icon DescriptionWe are making an increasing range of products with a significant proportion of the content from recycled material. Polybags’ recycled material does not always come from the same source. Some of it is taken from in-house industrial waste, whilst some is taken from post-consumer recycling. Certain recycled products cannot be considered as ‘food safe’, because the recycled material may contain contamination substance residues prior to the recycling process. This renders the recycled material unsuitable for direct food contact applications.
Polymers derived from renewable resources offer the opportunity to benefit society and the environment by reducing demands on fossil resources. Sugars, oils and other compounds in renewable feed-stocks can be converted into chemicals and polymers using conversion processes similar to those employed by the petrochemical industry. Currently, it is a tiny percentage of the overall plastics market, but is growing rapidly.
Additive that accelerates the degradation process. Materials do not require living organisms to break down. Instead, chemical additives are used to make it crumble / fragment into smaller pieces more quickly than traditional plastic when exposed to the natural elements (sunlight, air & water).
Additive that acts as a catalyst to accelerate the degradation process. Simply means the breakdown of organic matter by micro-organisms, such as bacteria and fungi over time into elements that are found in nature, such as CO2, water and biomass.
Paper poses less of a litter problem than most other packaging and it is widely recyclable. Nevertheless, paper bags have a much greater carbon footprint than polythene bags, whilst they are more prone to ripping or tearing and are not generally waterproof.
I’m Green is polythene produced from sugar cane, rather than traditional fossil fuels. It performs in the same way as traditional fossil-fuel-based polythene and is chemically identical, but has a renewable, bio-based carbon content share of more than 95% (ASTM D6866 standard). I’m Green can also be recycled with traditional polythene. A life-cycle analysis calculates that each tonne of I’m Green polythene produced captures up to 3.09 tonnes of CO2 out of the atmosphere through the sugar cane growing process.

DISPOSAL OPTIONS
Icon DescriptionMechanical recycling. The process of mechanical recycling has its ownenvironmental burden in using energy, materials and water to collect, sort and clean. Physical and chemical contamination may also preclude cost-effective recycling, since it needs cleaning processes which are economically and environmentally costly. Not all plastics are currently accepted in domestic recycling collections. Always check your local services for confirmation as difficult-to-recycle items may be collected by other organisations.
Biological / Organic recycling. Best when contents remain in packaging after use eg food packaging that is likely to be coated in food at the time it is discarded. Avoid when users don’t have access to industrial composting. Composting is a highly desirable clean source recycling alternative to landfill. Strictly in terms of energy efficiency, you’re not gaining or saving energy by composting, but you’re offsetting the energy needed to convert new plant-based materials into new packaging. Remember compostable products don’t biodegrade in landfill, the ocean or as litter.
