Responsible Tourism:• Minimises negative
impacts• Ensures economic
benefits • Is culturally sensitive• Conserves heritage
and diversity • Builds local pride and
confidence
• Generates respect between tourists and hosts
• Involves locals and enhances their well-being
• Improves working conditions and access to the industry
I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious Albert Einstein
Other industries export their products and services.Tourism imports its consumers
What can *I* do?
Consider this:
You don t entertain tourists in your house.’You entertain visitors
Hugo Antonio Santiago
Before you leave • Do your homework
• ‘What approach
must I take?’
If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people,
you might better stay at home James Michener
In your destination

Respect
• Learn about the destination• Respect local laws,
traditions, attractions, dress codes
• Respect the environment• Respect yourselfGodfrey A. Okiki "Women off to Market" 1963
Go green• Use accredited accommodation & tours
• Self-accreditation sucks!• Don’t rent the emaciated
camel
• Leave the ivory on the elephant
• Re-use & recycle• Use carbon offsetting
Be yourselfYes, you are paying, and no, why should you accept poor service?
Responsible Tourism demands equal relationships
But be nice
Be charitable. But...
• Donate via reputable institutions and to recognised projects
• Self-accreditation sucks• Don’t give money to children • If you have to volunteer - how will
your stay affect your hosts (Positively? Negatively?)
Look but don’t touch And no, don’t leave any footprints • Leave nature as it is• Wild animals are wild - no petting. Respect their space• Put your butt out properly - and take it home with you• Use water sparingly
After your trip (or while you’re travelling)• Be generous• Share your experiences on line• Suggest ways of travelling responsibly • Tag, tag, tag
I don’t care what you do.I do care whether the scale of your ambitionis making it laughably, impossibly better
