Responsive design does not mean taking an existing site and making it look good on mobile. It involves a little bit more planning than that. A good web design agency will look beyond desktop and mobile and consider how a website worked across devices of all types and size.

Prioritise Your InformationNot everything on your site will be able to be visible on a small display, so to make your site makes sense you need to decide what the priority content is. Generally, people browsing a site on a mobile device will be looking for quick information - a product price, a restaurant opening time - and so on. A small display needs to get this information to the front. Try and use easily decipherable icons instead of text wherever possible. Conversely, people who are doing in depth research tend to do this on a larger display, so use the extra space available to present more detailed information, supporting graphics and other forms of rich media where you can to encourage a conversion.

Good navigation is essential for a good user experience. Make it easy to get to the most important parts of your site on a small device, and don't worry if other parts are hidden fairly deeply - you can alter the navigation displayed on larger screens to show more options for people looking for greater depth.

Be Ruthless With Images

Even with modern mobile devices, connections can be unreliable for speed, and tariffs can have data limits. Remove any images that aren't necessary, and optimise any that are needed for minimum size rather than highest quality.

Pay Attention to Your Fonts

Some original fonts might look great on larger displays, but as they sale down in size they can become harder and harder to read compared to standard fonts. If you must use a particular font for branding purposes, pay attention to how it looks at smaller sizes, and consider using it only for headings and then reverting to a standard font for general text on smaller displays.

Pay Attention to Input

The dreaded 'fat finger syndrome' can make form-filling an ordeal, so make it as easy as possible by keeping your forms simple, well spaced, and fully tested on even the smallest devices.

Test the website on as many physical devices as possible before going live.
