THE ROMAN CATHOLIC PARISH OF 16th October 2016 - 29th Sunday of Ordinary Time - Issue 1145 7 YEARS BUILDING A STRONG WORSHIPING COMMUNITY 1946- 2016 ST JOHN BOSCO PARISH CELEBRATING 0 ADMIRE AND IMITATE THEIR FAITH The enthusiasm of being part of a parish, building it up, contributing towards it, spending time in and for it, was very high seventy years ago. It was just after World War II, and people had almost nothing, except firm faith, zeal, confidence and courage. They wholeheartedly embraced all pastoral, spiritual and sacramental programmes which informed, formed and transformed their faith. Baptisms were not in short supply, nor were First Communions and regular Confessions. Church marriages were the normal thing for couples coming together for a lasting union. Even those who, sadly, had suffered separation or divorce were prompt to seek advice and guidance from the parish office before proceeding into other relationships. Prayer groups and teaching sessions were teeming with people eager to learn and grow in their faith. You could only have Mass in your Home if you booked early! They were rising up to action on behalf of the poor. That vibrant faith has kept this parish going. Looking back at those years spurs us all to admire and emulate their example. The words of the Letter to the Hebrews are apt here: Remember your leaders who preached the word of God to you, and as you reflect on the outcome of their lives, imitate their faith (Heb 13:7). Yes, imitate their faith. Pray constantly, individually, and with your family. Go to Mass regularly, every Sunday to bless and be blessed. Go to Confession regularly, to receive God's healing and forgiveness. Bless your marriage in church. Speak to a priest if you are not yet married in church. As the sin of each one diminishes the holiness of the entire church, the grace of every Sacrament benefits not just the recipient, but the whole church (Fr. Bon).
