A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL, CRAIG MUSSI It is my pleasure to welcome everyone back for a new school year. This time of new beginnings offers a great opportunity to launch new goals with renewed energy. All of us here at Moon Valley are ready to make the 2013-2014 school year a success for everyone. Moon Valley High School enters the year as an “A”-Rated school for the second year of the state’s new school labels. We are proud to report our top rating from last year as one of the top public high schools in the state for academic growth. Furthermore, the school was recognized in the U.S. News and World Report as a Bronze school placing Moon Valley in the top 5% of all public high schools nationwide for the 6th year in a row. In addition, we are also proud of our selection as the 2013 Advanced Placement National District of the Year. We believe all students benefit from being actively involved in sports, clubs and other extra-curricular activities during their high school years. Now is the time to ask your student, “How will you be involved at school this year?” We also invite all parents to be an active part

of their student’s education. This year, we will have a Freshman Orientation Night on Tuesday, August 20th at 6:00 p.m. for all freshmen and their parents. Please plan to attend and show your support as students embark on their high school years. Other ways for parents to be involved is to attend the Freshmen Fall Festival on September 26th and to join the Moon Valley Rocket Boosters, our parent/teacher organization. The first Rocket Boosters meeting will take place on Monday, September 9th at 7:00 PM. This summer newsletter includes important information about registration schedules and activities. Please take a few moments to review it carefully with your student and keep it for future reference. We look forward to working with parents and students as we begin another successful school year. Have a safe and enjoyable summer and we look forward to seeing you in a few weeks.

Dear Parents / Guardians & Students,
Welcome to the 2013-14 school year, which holds
high promise for students both socially and
academically. Since academics relates directly to
attendance, Moon Valley’s focus will be on ensuring
that students attend school regularly in order to
achieve academic success.
Moon Valley has high expectations for student
punctuality. When the bell rings to start a class, all
tardy students are to report to the Attendance Office
and will return to class with a pass.
Attendance Policy:
A student who reaches his/her thirteenth (13TH)
absence and/or tardy may lose credit eligibility in the
class or classes in which the thirteen (13TH)
absences/tardy are recorded. Parents will be notified
by mail on the fifth (5TH) and eighth (8TH) absence in
order to prevent a student from unknowingly being
placed on academic probation and/or losing credit in
a class. Our automated calling system will notify
parents of unexcused full day absences and
unexcused single period absences.
Parents wanting the automated caller to contact them
at work or cell phone need to contact the Moon
Valley Attendance Office to request this feature.

Dress
Continuing this year will be a policy to reduce
electronic device distractions. In support of this,
all electronic devices, including cell phones,
iPods, MP3 players and all game devices will
not be allowed during school operating hours
(8am-2:35pm). With this policy, Moon Valley
hopes to improve our students’ classroom
learning. Disciplinary actions will apply to those
who fail to comply with the rules.
Dress Code:
Moon Valley High School Teachers and
Administrators enforce the dress code throughout
the school year. Keep in mind that tops with
shoulder straps less than 2 inches in width are
prohibited.
A detailed account of both attendance and dress
code policy is printed in the student handbook.
For those who have moved during the summer,
please remember to update your contact
information. As always, we thank you for your
support.

Assistant Principal of Discipline & Attendance
ARS 13-205.A.5 states, “Student conduct, dress,
and personal appearance must be such that it is
appropriate and meets reasonable safety, health and
decency standards and that it will not disrupt or
distract from the instructional procedure of the
school nor tend to diminish the disciplinary control
of the teacher.”
The school has a responsibility to encourage
students to maintain high standards of scholarship.
This can be accomplished only through strong
feelings of self-respect. One avenue of creating self-
respect is to dress well. We strongly recommend the
following standards:
1 Cleanliness should be observed with regard to
clothing, hair, and personal hygiene.
2 Bare feet in public places are prohibited by state
health laws as a precaution for public health and
safety.
3 Shirts and blouses must be worn long enough to
be tucked in. Muscle shirts, crop tops, bare
midriffs, spaghetti straps, mesh shirts, and
undershirts are prohibited.
4 Students are required to remove hats inside
classrooms, the media center, the administration
building, the cafeteria, and the gym during school
hours. Students are required to remove hats in the
auditorium at all times.
5 For further guidelines, please refer to the current
District and Moon Valley Policies covering
general student appearance.

MOON VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL
CAMPUS GUIDELINES FOR OPERATING MOTOR VEHICLES
Campus driving and parking privileges are granted and rescinded through the Attendance Office under the
direction of the Assistant Principal for Discipline and Attendance. Parking or driving violations will result in
disciplinary action such as detention, suspension or forfeiture of campus driving and parking privileges.
Student drivers must observe all of the following rules in order to maintain driving and parking privileges on the
Moon Valley High School campus. Having a parking sticker does not ensure a parking space.
1. All motor vehicles driven by students must have student parking permits for the current school year properly
adhered to the inside front windshield, lower left hand side. This includes motorcycles and motor bikes.
Parking permits are not transferable.
2. Speed on campus is not to exceed 10 M.P.H.
3. Students are to park only in designated spaces for students. Parking in faculty-staff areas, in red zones (fire
lanes), yellow zones (access lanes) and undesignated areas on campus is strictly prohibited.
4. Driving on campus or exiting campus driveways in a reckless or otherwise unsafe manner is a serious offense
and will be strictly penalized. The school maintains the right to determine what constitutes "reckless or unsafe"
driving.
5. Loitering in cars parked on school property during school hours (7:30 AM - 3:00 PM) is not permitted.
Students may not be in the student parking lot during or between classes.
6. Volume of music must be at a reasonable level so not to interfere with classroom instruction or disturb others.
Please be courteous.
7. Parking Permit Fee: $10.00*. A fee will be charged for any replacement.
8. No driver will be allowed to return to campus after driving off unless they have a pass to leave issued from the
attendance office.
YOU MUST PRESENT THE CURRENT VEHICLE REGISTRATION AND YOUR DRIVER'S LICENSE
IN ORDER TO OBTAIN A PERMIT.
I UNDERSTAND AND AGREE TO ABIDE BY THE RULES FOR OPERATING MOTOR VEHICLES ON
THE MOON VALLEY CAMPUS.

We have great news for families that attend Moon Valley athletic events! Parent Athletic Passes
will now be available to parents of Moon Valley High School students for $60*. This is a
great way to support our Rockets and at the same time make it affordable for you and your family
to attend more events. As an example, for the price of one home football game and two home
basketball games, a family of five can enjoy all five season home football games as well as all
other sports home games during all regularly scheduled athletic events.
Passes can only be purchased in the bookstore (and during registration). Unfortunately we
will not be able to sell them at the events and we cannot give credit for games that you have
already attended.
This pass can be used only at Moon Valley regular season home athletic events.
(tournaments, regional and state play-off games are not included)
The pass will only be issued to the immediate families of Moon Valley students which
includes both parents and siblings under high school age. Moon Valley students will still be
required to obtain a student activity card or purchase a ticket for their admittance.
The pass must be presented at the designated gate (no waiting for tickets!). Identification
will be required. All family members must enter together. All children listed on the pass
must be accompanied inside the gate by the named parent.
Sorry, this pass is non-refundable and non-transferable. Lost or stolen passes can only be
replaced at full price.

Moon Valley High School
Counseling & Career Services
Research shows that students who have a
career plan achieve a higher level of life
success. Moon Valley students receive one-on-one guidance from
professional counselors, psychologist, social worker, and career specialist to
help meet their needs throughout high school.
The U.S. Department of Education Office of Vocational and Adult Education
(OVAE) identified 16 career “clusters” that represent career opportunities for
the 21st century economy. These clusters frame student opportunities as they
pursue postsecondary education.
Glendale Union High School District (GUHSD) has identified six career
fields that encompass 15 of the 16 national career clusters and 37 career
pathways against which to align school curriculum. These pathways provide
students a framework for developing individualized Education & Career
Action Plans (ECAPs).
GUHSD Career Fields:
Arts & Communications Business, Marketing & Management Hospitality & Restaurant Management Engineering & Industrial Systems Health Services Social & Human Services
Counselors help guide students through the associated pathways as they plan
for their future. Counseling services include career planning for all grades,
beginning with a four-year plan for freshmen. A full-time, on-campus Career
Center is also available to all students.
Freshmen begin planning their four-year high school career by completing
the Interest Profiler and Career Finder on AZCIS.intocareers.org, a planning
tool that includes a personal portfolio that will follow students through high
school and beyond. Students then begin to build an ECAP for high school
with the Student Planner and start to create a resume.
Sophomore students complete the Cluster Finder to help identify their career
path and begin to investigate schools, adding at least one school to their
portfolio. Sophomores may also take the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) entrance
exam, as it may significantly improve scores when they take it as juniors.
Juniors select a program using the AZCIS [career] cluster browse. At this
point they will also utilize the Scholarship Finder and continue to work on
their resume. Some juniors will actually select their post-secondary institution,
which is called “early decision.” Students should investigate how this may
bind or eliminate other options depending upon the school they select.
Senior year focus is to select a post-secondary institution with the help of the
School Finder and continue to use the career clusters to research programs.
Students will also apply for scholarships.
An annual Career Fair focuses on more than 40 careers through individual
presentations to juniors and seniors. Students are surveyed for interests to
help in the topic selection each year.
Students also receive additional support in their career education through
one-on-one guidance in our full-time Career Center, which is located in the
Media Center. Students may research schools, learn about careers,
scholarship and financial aid resources, apply to college or research
employment opportunities.
Individual scholarship and financial aid services are offered to students in
our Career Center. Parents and students may call the Career Center
directly for information or ask questions at 623-915-8055.
Students will find many scholarships in the local $how Me The Money
publication, which is also available on Moon Valley’s webpage, found at
moonvalley.guhsdaz.org.

Students access their portfolio using ID GUHSD (their student ID number)
