After the official opening by the Arona mayor José Francisco Niño, the large tent in the courtyard in front of the Casa del Mar in Los Cristianos quickly became packed, mainly with foreign visitors and residents. The mayor was accompanied by local tourism councillor Évelin Santos and other local council colleagues as well as Miguel Antonio García from the Cabildo and the president of the hoteliers association (Ashotel) Jorge Marichal. Almost 50 artisan producers of food and wine from all over the Canaries were present at the fair and there was no shortage of wine, cheeses, honey, bread, sweets and cakes and the Islands mojo sauces etc. Folklore groups delighted the visitors with typical Canarian music. Santos explained, “The Canarian Food Fair has been consolidated over the years as a flagship promotional event,” and she assured that, “We will continue invest- ing in the promotion of the gastronomic products typical to the Islands which are so desired by both tourists and residents”. MONTESDEOCA DAIRY Pinolere gold The best Tinerfeñan cheese of 2014 is the Montesdeoca one-year old cured cheese according to the judges at the recent Pinolere cheese fair. Daniel Montesdeoca said this, “Is an important award for us as it is the result of hard work and effort. We have always given priority to producing cheeses of high quality which people will select and enjoy for their flavour and texture.” He added that he was delighted that their cheeses were appreciated by so many people and promised that they would continue to work to improve the product and ensure that the island’s cheeses were known both here and outside Tenerife. The Montesdeoca dairy makes a variety of different cheeses including fresh, smoked, semi-cured, cured, gofio and pepper cheeses and this prize winning mature cured cheese. Members of the public interested in buying the cheeses can do so in the dairy, which is in Tijoco, driving up from Llano de las Flores just past the Disa petrol sta- tion, or at the stand in the Adeje Farmers’ Market every weekend, (8am -2pm, Saturdays and Sundays).
