CITY COUNCIL REPORT by Marya Repko

Mayor Sammy Hamilton reported that he had helped the crabbers get tags for their boats and thanked County Commissioner Jim Coletta, who was present at the meeting. He also acknowledged Monica Aranegui, District Representative for Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart. The Mayor announced our Halloween Party on Saturday, October 30 (see page 11 for details) and said that he hoped that our water system would eventually use reverse osmosis. During the week, citizens are asked to wear a red ribbon to show that they are committed to a Drug-Free America (see www.npf.org).

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, November 9, at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall. It is a week later because of the election on the first Tuesday of next month.

From Savannah’s Eyes

It feels so good since it has turned fall! I have been outside everyday practicing for cheerleading that starts in 3 weeks. We only have a few more games and then Volleyball is

going to be over. It has been a fun year but I am ready to be a cheerleader now for our basketball team! Go Gators!!!! At the booster club meeting on Friday they were talking about the Halloween dance on Friday, October 30th from 9:00 p.m. until 12:00 p.m. at City Seafood upstairs. It is only for grades 6-12 (middle - high school) and each person is allowed to bring one friend or guest with a cover charge of $5 if you go to Everglades City school and $10 for people who are not in our school. You can either dress up in a Halloween costume or either you can be dressed up. I'm so excited! I can't wait to see the awesome costumes everyone wears and how the place is decorated! This is going to be a SPOOKtacular dance! The last dance that we had I only sat down 2 times, I was having so much fun!! Plus I can't wait to go trick-or-treating before I go to the dance and get candy and sweets to eat!!! So I can stay up until 12 and dance all night!! Loving life, Savannah

Savannah Oglesby is in the 8th grade at Everglades City School and is a

regular contributor to this paper.

BOOSTER CLUB There will be a meeting on the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Media Center at the School. Parents and residents are invited to attend and support our school. The next meeting will be on Thursday, November 4. See you there!

HELPING KIDS The after-school program will not begin until five more people volunteer. If you can help on Monday afternoons from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. or if you want to donate craft materials, please contact Patty Huff at 695-2397.

BOOK FAIR is coming to Everglades City School on October 15 to October 22 from 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Late shopping hours till 4:30 p.m. on October 20-21. The theme this year is super heroes and community heroes. Each purchase helps us buy new books for our media center. Please come and show your support! Open to the public.

From Haleigh’s Heart

Hi Everybody! Our new Assistant Principal, Mrs. Brummer, made up a whole new thing at school. It’s called Mangrove Money. The Mangrove Money is used to buy stuff at a new store they open up on Fridays in the cafeteria. Teachers hand them out to kids who the teachers think deserve it. I love the new idea. I think it is a really cool privilege to give kids our age! In my last article, I mentioned that Mr. Tribble (Our Art Teacher) gave 3rd-6th grade assignments to do for the Seafood Festival. If you didn’t see last week’s paper, what we do is we draw a picture of anything we want to and a winner is picked. Once the winner is picked, they get their picture put on the Seafood Festival t-shirts! First, second and third place winners all get prizes! I can’t wait to see who the winner is! Also, I wanted to say congratulations to Bryan Sanders. He was last week’s great gator in my class! I’m hoping soon I will be great gator. Many kids have been great gator but Bryan is the latest. Congratulations once again. You deserved it! Sincerely, Haleigh Levingston

Haleigh Levingston, a 5th grader at Everglades City School, will be our

junior reporter for the elementary school.

MENTOR A STUDENT! “Take Stock in Children” is a statewide scholarship & mentoring program for deserving students with economic need who are selected in the 8th grade. Upon being accepted, the student promises until graduation to maintain a good grade point average, have good attendance, exhibit good behavior, stay drug and crime free, and meet weekly with a mentor. The reward for the student is a Florida prepaid scholarship for higher education. The school is asking that mentors volunteer. For info, phone 695-2156.

Everglades Links by Marya Repko

Local gal Dana Mitchell has done well in her chosen profession. I chatted with her in Sanibel where she is the postmaster, a prestigious job on that exclusive island. Dana grew up in Everglades City and graduated from ECity High School as valedictorian of her class. That was followed by university education in Tennessee. She joined the postal service, working part-time at first with Alma Jean House and then advancing to positions in Naples, on Marco Island as a supervisor, and as officer-in-charge at St. James City on Pine Island. After she was appointed to Sanibel, she commuted the 80-odd miles each day but has finally settled into a home on the mainland just across the causeway. She said about her Sanibel station and the friends there, “It’s a wonderful work atmosphere. I couldn’t ask for a better job.” To put it into context, in Sanibel there are 3,500 summer residents and 6,500 during the winter, most of whom have home delivery. That’s a lot of letters, advertising, and packages to manage every day but she has congenial and efficient colleagues, as I witnessed when I was there. By the way, Dana was thrilled with a copy of the Rapper which I brought – it just happened to contain a photo of her sister Donna Van Leeuwen.

Let us know if you have good news stories about Everglades area people from around the state or further afield.

Congratulations to winners Doug Henks and Troy Pruitt of the RedSnook Tournament on October 1-3 which raised over $75,000 for The Conservancy to help with estuary research.

Congratulations to the overall winners of The Angler’s Cup on September 16-18. The team of Captains Brian Sanders, Tony Wise, and Herb Kehoe won for the second year in a row.

Young Nick Rillo of Davie caught his first-ever redfish on October 2 during a fishing trip by the St. David’s Club from Hollywood. The 6-year-old is the son of a proud Ryan and grandson of Bill Cull who organized the event. The fish measured 23 inches.

REPORTING SAWFISH The NOAA boat has been in our waters surveying and tagging sawfish. If you see sawfish, please phone (352) 392-2360.

FLORIDA FLORA by Patricia Huff

Yellow Elder

(Tecoma stans)

The Yellow Elder is in full bloom! This shrub may have several branches or a single trunk; it looks more like a tree with pruning. The bright green leaves have an oval shape and its trunk has a pale brown or grey bark. It can grow 20 feet or higher and does well in full sun with little maintenance in a well drained area. The Yellow Elder is not a native of Florida (it is the official flower of the Virgin Islands), but it is naturalizing in this area. The plant itself does have some medicinal purposes, treating diabetes and digestive problems, and its leaf extracts can slow the growth of yeast infections. Also, it contains compounds that have a catnip effect on felines. The Yellow Elder has clusters of trumpet shape golden blooms and will add a lot of color to your garden. This photo was taken in Chokoloskee.

FWC News

The FWC advises that incidents with panthers are preventable if pet and livestock owners take proper measures. Until the attractants (your domestic animals) are removed or secured, the panthers will return to the area for food.

Stone crab season starts on October 15. Stone crab claws must be at least 2¾ inches in length to be harvested legally and claws may not be taken from egg-bearing female stone crabs. Recreational harvesters are allowed to use up to five stone crab traps and there is a daily bag limit of one gallon of claws per person or two gallons per vessel, whichever is less.

Saw palmetto berries are critical to the survival of many wildlife species, but none more so than the threatened Florida black bear. Picking the fruit is illegal in Wildlife Management Areas.

Anglers my fish for red snapper on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until November 21. The bag limit is 2 per day measuring at least 16 inches total length.

EDGAR WATSON

Thanks to historian and Watson expert Alvin Lederer for this old portrait of Edgar Watson.

LOCAL HISTORY

As we approach to the 100th anniversary of E. J. Watson’s shooting at the Smallwood Store in Chokoloskee, here are some accounts of the events in October 1910. According to the New York Times and NOAA's weather bureau, the storm started with strong winds around October 12th, hitting Cuba, then continuing up Key West and the west coast with strong winds through the 19th, the barometer returning to normal around the 21st of October.

Rob Storter states in Crackers in the Glade this about Watson: Watson came to Chokoloskee just as the 1910 Hurricane was brewing and hired my dad to take him to Fort Myers to seek the aid of Sheriff Frank Tippins to arrest the murderers. They got only to Marco before they had to seek shelter. Tippins came south about that time, checking rumors of the killing, and missed them ... After the storm, Watson returned to Chokoloskee, as a mob started gathering with guns….”

Ted Smallwood is quoted in Tebeau’s The Story of the Chokoloskee Bay Country as recalling: About then the 1910 hurricane struck here (Oct. 17) and tore my house up ... Watson went to Fort Myers in the hurricane and came back after it was over ... Watson bought from me some storm swept shells, said he was going down to his place to kill Cox ... There was a crowd gathering at my landing and supposed there would be some doing when Watson got there ... my wife and Mrs. Watson came back to the house ...We heard guns going off and I heard Mrs. Watson say, “My God, they have killed Mr. Watson” ...

For info about the re-enactment on October 24, see page 3.

MUSEUM NEWS

Internationally reknown nature photographer, artist, author, and speaker Connie Bransilver was at a reception in her honor on October 9 to launch an exhibit of her dramatic photographs entitled "Tenuous Hold: Our Fragile Wetland Habitat" which will be on display in the Pauline Reeves Gallery at the front of the Museum for the month of October.

To learn more about Connie and her work, see www.conniebransilver.com.

The Museum is open on Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There is no admission charge but donations are appreciated. There will be a special opening on Sunday, October 24, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to commemorate the opening of the Laundry in 1927.

Tickets for the Seafood Festival Quilt raffle are $10 each or 3 for $25. The spectacular quilt is on display in the Museum and the drawing of the winning ticket will take place during Seafood Festival in February 2011.

The Friends of the Museum of the Everglades (FME) lost a loyal supporter in Sam Vinikoff who donated so many of his works for our fundraising when Pauline Reeves started the move to convert the old Laundry building into a Museum. See Sam’s obituary on page 11.

The next FME meeting will be on Wednesday, November 3, at 9:00 a.m. in the Museum. To join the Friends and to see the schedule of artists during the season, visit their website www.evergladesmuseum.org.

THE OLD LAUNDRY BUILDING

It’s a strange coincidence that the Laundry building opened on October 24, the date when the Watson killing took place. Of course, there were some years in between; seventeen to be exact. The Laundry was built by the Collier interests in 1927 to clean the linens at the Rod & Gun and the Everglades Inn. Barron Collier himself used to send his laundry from Useppa, the isolated island off the coast of Fort Myers, on his yacht.

The most well-known people to operate the Laundry were the Echols family. The men took care of the fire that heated the water while the women did the washing. The clerestory with windows was added on the top of the roof to let out the steam and heat. The Laundry operation ceased during World War II and the building became offices for the Collier Development Corporation and an insurance agency. In 1965 the local Women’s Club took it over, renting at first but then purchasing in 1972. After the club disbanded, it was used as a restaurant called “Susie’s Subs” which is now next door. Eventually, Pauline White restarted the Women’s Club and decided in 1988 that the building should be completely renovated. She and her friends raised enough seed money with quilting bees, cake sales, and other activities to get a grant from the Division of Historical Resources at the Florida Department of State. The Collier County Museum system agreed to adopt the old Laundry as a museum and the women set up a “preview-museum” in City Hall with historic items donated by members of the community. After extensive restoration, the Museum was opened on April 26, 1998, just seventy years after the opening of the Tamiami Trail. The 80th and 10th anniversaries were celebrated in 2008 with a gala two-day event organized by the late Carol Moseman for whom the little theater at the back of the building is named in memory. The Friends were established in 1995 and continue to this day providing volunteers and organizing events. Their mission is to help the Museum by raising funds.

Guavas by Chester Keene

I knew a very nice lady who was born in Cuba, as her parents before her were. They owned a guava plantation for many years and made and sold guava products. This was before Fidel Castro took power. One day she said that the police came and told them that they had to turn over the plantation to the state and, if not, they could leave but take only the clothes on their backs. They didn’t want to live under these conditions, as many other Cubans from whom the government seized property. They had the chance to leave Cuba with nothing – but, coming to America with nothing was much better. Before they left, they sewed guava seeds into the hems and other places on their clothes. They moved to the Miami area. There they planted the guava seeds and started all over again. She gave me some of the guava she grew. I now have several trees from these seeds.

Chester Keene is a retired law enforcement officer and Florida native. He retains the copyright to this short story.

Understanding The Amendments by Patricia Huff

There are six constitutional amendments on the ballot:

No. 1: Repeal of Public Campaign Financing Requirement

In 1998, an amendment was approved to allow for public financing of statewide campaigns, meaning that candidates, if they agree to a spending limit, receive public funds to help finance their campaigns. If approved this year, the availability of public money would end in the 2014 election year.

No. 2: Homestead Ad Valorem Tax Credit for Deployed

Military Personnel

This amendment would allow for the military to receive an additional property tax break.

No. 4: Referenda Required for Adoption and Amendment of

Local Government Comprehensive Land Use Plans

Citizen referenda would be required for changes to the comprehensive land-use plan before permits are approved.

No. 5: Standards for Legislature to Follow in Legislative

Redistricting

The amendment would set non-political standards and takes into consideration the State voting districts.

No. 6: Standards for Legislature to Follow in Congressional

Redistricting

The amendment would set non-political standards and takes into consideration the Congressional voting districts.

No. 8: Revision of the Class Size Requirements for Public

Schools

In 2002 voters approved of an amendment that requires a limit to the number of students in each classroom. If the 2002 amendment is revised, the maximum number of students for each classroom would be increased.

ELECTION TIPS

Read all the amendments thoroughly. You can mark the sample ballot you received in the post and take it with you to the polling station to make your voting quicker.

Bring one form of picture/signature identification (eg, a drivers license) with you.

Remove all campaign literature that you have brought with you when you leave the polling station.

Do not talk about candidates or issues or make comments about them within 100 feet of the polling station.

Local public broadcaster WGCU will have radio and TV programs about the amendments during the week of October 25-29. For a schedule, see www.wgcu.org.

Early voting starts on October 18 and ends on Oct 30. The local polling station is City Hall during early voting and is open from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. every day except Sunday. The official election date is Tuesday, November 2. Voting takes place from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Community Center.
