BACK2SCHOOL BASH On Sunday afternoon, August 18, a giant Water Slide plus Cookout was enjoyed by the Area Youth at the Chokoloskee Church of God, headed up by Assoc. Pastor Lynnette Morris, assisted by Hazel Mitchell & Owen Mitchell. Jeff Lewis, Wesley Mitchell & Jearl Brown cooked up the food on the grill. It was a great ‘Sun and Fun’ day with 50 people in attendance.

CONGRATULATIONS Diana Curry and Helen Bryan were both honored on August 21 at the Everglades Seafood Depot in celebration of their 80th birthdays. They were also presented with plaques and recognized for their many contributions to the community. Diana and Helen have been active members of the Everglades area for many, many years. Diana was acknowledged as our “community nurse” for 20 years (her first medical challenge was helping a young man with a fish hook in his eyebrow), and Helen has been one of our most active “community leaders” for 22 years. The honor bestowed upon them was definitely fitting and representative of the appreciation the community has for these two lovely ladies. Thanks to Chris Ammerman, Annie Mitchell, and Virginia Kanning for organizing this nice event.

Amy Fouchea has embarked on a new adventure. She has just opened the Angel Fish Café located behind Right Choice Supermarket at 102 Buckner Avenue. Fresh fruit kabobs, mango bruschetta, soups, tropical tuna salad, roast beef with organic cheddar wraps, smoothies and milkshakes are just a few of the items on the menu (I tried the Waldorf chicken salad wrap with grapes, hand-spiced pecans, and sun dried cranberries which was very tasty!). Amy is offering free delivery, a 10% discount to locals and 10 cents on each order will be donated to a local mission. SNOOK SEASON Recreational harvest of snook runs September 1 through November 30. The bag limit is one fish per person per day, and the size between 28” and 33” total length. A special snook permit, a well as a recreational fishing license, is required.

CONGRESSIONAL VISIT Karen Harmon, the District Representative in Collier County at the office of Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart, will meet with constituents in City Hall on Tuesday, September 3 at 3:00 p.m. For information, phone 348-1620.

CITY COUNCIL The next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 3, at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall and will include the First Reading of the Budget. If you would like to speak during Public Comments, you can sign up before the meeting starts. The Second Reading of the Budget will be on Wednesday, September 11, at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall.

Chamber of Commerce Our local chamber operates the Welcome Center in Carnestown (the A-shaped building on the corner of US41 and SR29) which attracts visitors wanting to learn about what to do in the area. Some tourists are not even aware that we have a vibrant little town down the road which offers boat tours, hotels, and restaurants. The Chamber meets on the second Monday of each month, and new members are welcome to attend. The next gathering will be at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, September 9, in the Seafood Depot. LIONS CLUB The Everglades Lions Club, a 60-year old affiliate of Lions Clubs International, the world's largest service organization, dedicated to eyesight, hearing, and diabetes problems, as well as other local concerns, meets at the Everglades Seafood Depot on the second Thursday each month at 5:30 p.m. The next meeting after the summer recess is on Thursday, September 12. SAWFISH REPORT Sawfish Abundance Survey

As in years past, several recaptures of previously tagged small, immature animals occurred on the August expedition. The highlight of the trip happened when we captured and tagged two new young-of-the-year (102 and 113 cm STL) at Mud Bay in Everglades National Park. This is one of the first times animals this small have been captured in the backcountry this late in the season. We were surprised because water in the backcountry was very fresh (salinity 5.0-7.1). We were joined on August 11 by Sonja Fordham from Shark Advocates International. Unfortunately, she did not see an immature smalltooth sawfish with our team, but she was able to see two adult males in Florida Bay on the previous day with Dr. R. Dean Grubbs and his field crew from the Florida State University Marine and Coastal Laboratory. The Smalltooth Sawfish Abundance Survey research team will be back in Everglades City October 13-19, 2013. Smalltooth sawfish were listed as endangered in 2003 under the Endangered Species Act and the current core population is limited to waters off the coast of southwest Florida. It is illegal to target, possess, or injure this animal, but incidental encounters with fishermen do occur. Input and cooperation from the public is greatly valued. If you see or encounter a smalltooth sawfish, please contact the International Sawfish Encounter Database at (352) 392-2360. Please exercise caution when untangling a sawfish from fishing line and never remove the saw. Research follows permits EVER-2013-SCI-0008 and ESA-13330. Snook season opens and fishermen are ready to try to catch one in the slot and take it home

for dinner. The water remains warm this month and fishing should be good. Fish early, late and deep for the best results. Fish points, look for oyster bars and irregular places on beaches where there is current, especially around river mouths. It has been difficult for most of us to find large tarpon; however, small ones can be found in remote areas. Look for moving water and you could be rewarded with some Snook as well. Redfishing action has been average for this time of year. Most fish are being taken on the incoming tide on the outside points. For those of us who sight fish, the best fishing takes place on the lower tide phases. Offshore fishing should only improve during the month of September. Grouper fishing around rock piles remains productive and you always have a chance at catching Tripletail, Cobia, Mackerel and Permit.

FWC News Tarpon, Bonefish become

catch-and-release Two premier recreational fisheries will soon have new protections in place, a measure aimed at ensuring that tarpon and bonefish’s economic and fishing value remain for generations to come. The following changes will go into effect September 1 in state and federal waters off Florida: All harvest of tarpon will be eliminated, with the exception of the harvest or possession of a single tarpon when in pursuit of an International Game Fish Association record and in conjunction with a tarpon tag. Tarpon tags will be limited to one per person, per year except for properly licensed charter boat captains and fishing guides. Transport or shipment of tarpon becomes limited to one fish per person. There will be a one-fish-per-vessel limit for tarpon. Gear used for tarpon will be limited to hook-and-line only. Multiple hooks in conjunction with live or dead natural bait cannot be used to target or harvest tarpon, or to target bonefish. People will be allowed to temporarily possess a tarpon for photography, measurement of length and girth and scientific sampling, with the stipulation that tarpon more than 40 inches must remain in the water. Tarpon regulations will extend into federal waters. The bonefish tournament exemption permit is eliminated. This exemption allowed tournament anglers with the proper permit to temporarily possess bonefish for transport to a tournament scale. Cane Toad (Rhinella marina formerly Bufo marinus) INVASIVE! Nick names: marine toad, giant toad, sea toad / Status: FL=invasive, population increasing, IUCN = LC (Least Concern) / Weight: 1-5 lb. (.45-2.2 kg) / Life span: to 15 years / Reproduces: lays between 8,000 to 25,000 eggs during the rainy seaon / Found: Collier and Lee Counties, coastal and inland / Months found: JFMAmjjasOND (lower case indicates breeding season).

On July 17, during its monthly frog call survey, the field biology staff of J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge and SCCF (Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation) heard an unusual frog call. Investigating the call they discovered a population of giant toads, commonly referred to as cane toads, living in temporary wetlands near the intersection of Middle Gulf Drive and Fulgar Street on the eastern end of the island. The staff surmised that the toads had hitchhiked to Sanibel, either as tadpoles surviving in standing water from a plant tarp or container, or as adults hiding in mulch, sod or ornamental plants. However they arrived, the news that Sanibel is now a potential home to cane toads was not something these field biologists were thrilled about. Cane toads are serious trouble and prolific breeders. Nowhere on earth is the scourge of these invasive toads more of a problem than in Australia, where the cane toad has now spread across a fifth of the continent. The average cane toad in Australia weighs in at an unbelievable four pounds and one specimen tipped the scales at 5.8 pounds with a body length of 15 inches, not including its legs. The toads, lacking any viable predators and having defensive poisonous glands located right behind its eyes, have decimated regional populations of Northern Quoll (a rat-sized native marsupial) and place more than 75 indigenous reptiles and amphibians at risk. Ironically, cane toads were introduced to northeastern Australia in 1935 from Hawaii to help eradicate cane beetles which, after further research, they have had no impact on. Estimates put the number of cane toads in Australia at 200 million and, because of their huge size, they are increasing their range outward at a speed of 25 miles per year.

Florida Tales “Strong Man of Welcome, FL”

by Chester Keene P.W. Keen was said to be the strongest and largest man in the small town of Welcome, located about thirteen miles south of Plant City, FL. He weighed about 220 pounds and was 6 ft.2 inches tall. P.W. got married in 1895 when he was 18 years old. While he was still 18, he fell from a large orange tree and landed on a fence post, puncturing the lining of his stomach. P.W. must have had his mother’s disposition; both were have said to be quiet and easy to get along with. P.W. was a man of many talents it ran in the Keen family when it came to music; he played the fiddle for the square dances. He ran the grist mill, operated the saw mill, built coffins for the dead and built houses for the living. He also served as the village blacksmith in Welcome. He was also called to subdue the drunks of the small town because of his great strength. He was also a Church going man. In 1907 P.W. moved his family to Sanibel Island, southwest of Ft. Myers. Sanibel was said to be a beautiful island with a T-shaped island next to it. It was said that a number of families were living on Sanibel Island at this time. His wife had two brothers living there. P.W. built a palmetto house for his family to live in.

He led a fisherman’s life with his two brothers-in-law for about 4 years, but he tired of this life and returned to Welcome in 1911. In the latter part of 1916, he moved his family to Tampa and became a ship fitter in a shipyard and worked there for about 12 years. P.W. and his wife had 8 children, all born in Welcome. Even in Tampa, he was known for his size and strength and called upon by some of the doctors in the sanitarium where he was a carpenter to subdue drunks once again. Some of the same doctors encouraged him to have his hernia repaired which was the result of the fall in his younger days. He would not consent to an operation. By this time the depression of the 30s was on, but P.W. continued to work as long as he could as a carpenter and painter. His reputation for good work was well known by the Tampa contractors. In 1953 he was stricken and taken to the hospital for emergency surgery for his hernia. He came through the surgery but his kidneys failed before he left the hospital. From Savannah’s Eyes

This past week has been a whirlwind for me. I started back to school for my junior year, and also my 16th birthday was the day after school started! Since I am a junior now and have over a 3.0 GPA, I qualified for Dual Enrollment at

Edison State College part-time in Naples. My first day at Edison was Thursday, August 22, and it was such a different feeling than high school. The teachers don’t give you work daily; they give you a syllabus that tells you everything you have to do and when it needs to be turned in. Before I went to Edison, I always thought that the teachers were going to be mean and scary like how the stereotypes were when I was younger. But the teachers were nice and witty! The only thing that they want is the same as what the teachers in high school want: that your work is to be turned in or no credit; cell phones must be turned off; and you need to pay attention. After my first class, I had no fear anymore of college and I am ready for next week so I can go again! On August 20 I officially turned 16 years old! It has been an amazing 16 years for me, and I am so excited for the years coming. Since I am 16 now, I have always wanted a Sweet 16 party (which almost every girl wants), and I actually had one on last Saturday, August 24. It was celebrated in the back of Island Café, and I was so excited! I will tell you all about it in my next article! Happy 16th birthday to me!

SHERIFF’S REPORT

On August 19 Deputies took two separate theft reports from two businesses located off of Dupont Street. In one case a business stated that their pickup truck was taken some time since the previous Tuesday. The pickup truck was found abandoned behind the Chokoloskee Post Office. In a separate incident another business located off Dupont Street reported that a large brass boat prop was removed from their property during the previous weekend. Investigators are looking into both of these reported thefts. Should you have any information on either of these cases, please contact the Collier Sheriff’s Office. Please remember to not leave unattended fishing equipment in boats. This type of property is an easy target for would-be thieves. Don’t let yourself become an easy victim – always remember to lock your doors. Also, remember to help us keep our neighborhoods safe by reporting any suspicious activity immediate to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office at 252-9300 or in emergencies by dialing 911.
